Community Engagement. Government support.

Lobbying is increasingly losing relevance.

Governments don’t want to deal with a firm

presenting 20 projects for 20 companies.

Governments want to deal with someone they can

trust. Someone they know they can get an outcome

with. Someone who helps them achieve their

goals.

The question is - how do you match your goals, to

the governments goals?

Bastion S+GO is the match maker.

We work with your organisation to develop

influence, relationships and engagement strategies

to change the way government perceives you.

We ensure you are engaged with your networks

and the community so you are ready to receive,

and appreciate, government support.

Bastion S+GO will position Netball NSW to activate

your support network, generate influence and

create outcomes.

There is always money available from government.

It is all about how you ask.

Background

Netball NSW has more than 100,000 registered

players in the state. Factor in social players,

friends, siblings and parents, the reach of netball

in NSW is nothing short of phenomenal.

Every sporting organisation knows their greatest

asset is people and Netball NSW has a greater

foundation of people power than most.

Netball deserves more credit for this, both from

commercial and broadcast partners, and from

government.

Netball NSW should be receiving regular and

susbtantial funding for a range of programs from

all levels of government.

Especially from a State Government entering

election mode and seeking positive stories.

Your Request

A meeting was held between Jeremy Hillman, GM

at Bastion S+GO, and Tristan Prosser-Shaw, GM -

Commercial & Communications at Netball NSW.

Bastion S+GO undertook the development of a

proposal to demonstrate how Netball NSW can do

the following more successfully:

• Deepen and broaden relationships with

government, particularly state & local;

• Activate and engage existing networks.

• Develop funded community programs that

enhance netball’s reach and reputation.

Bastion S+GO believe we can provide significant

assistance with our unique method of government

& community engagement.

6

Understand government.Develop relationships.Create results.

This is what we do at Bastion S+GO.

We analyse the community and government

opportunities for your organisation.

We comprehensively articulate a framework of

what outcomes are possible now. And how we can

position you to generate outcomes in the future.

Everything we do is with one eye of government,

one eye on the prize.

We create relationships and influence that

endures.

Step 1: Government Outcome & Engagement Review (GOER)

The critical first step in our process is a forensic

analysis of your current relationships with

government at all levels.

We then highlight, prioritise and strategise

opportunities that are yet to be realised.

This will result in a list of achievable outcomes for

financial and/or in-kind returns.

This process delivers Netball NSW with a

comprehensive analysis of:

1. your past reports, strategic documents

and frameworks and how they fit within a

government narrative;

2. your industry and competitors - what are they

doing and achieving. What can we learn from

them?

3. your board and staff - what relationships

with government do they have? Have those

relationships been realised or activated?

4. all the available government assets of Netball

NSW, how they are used, and are they being

maximised for future leverage, including:

• a list of government agencies to target.

• contacts within those governments for you to

engage with.

• a review of your funded assets.

• a valuation of the assets not yet funded.

• the creation of new assets established through

government funding.

5. how you are managing community engagement;

6. how you are engaging with your membership base;

and

7. The current conversation.

In addition, this process delivers Netball NSW with a

detailed strategy for:

1. maintaining and improving the relationships with

government, members, the bureaucracy and the

wider community;

2. membership and community engagement to

increase your influence in the eyes of government.

3. identifying and creating new assets to position

Netball NSW to be able to receive additional funds;

and

4. implementing the analysis; including a time frame

and the resources required.

At the end of this process you will be delivered a concise

document that provides a thorough understanding

of where you sit relative to government, and how to

engage with all levels of government for financial

benefit.

Netball NSW will be creating new opportunities for the

Australian netball community and taking government

along for the ride.

How do we make it work?

You don’t know what you don’t have time to find out.

This is so often the case for our clients as they

know there are funding opportunities within their

organisation. However, for one reason or another,

actually going searching for it, and putting the strategy

in place, gets left on the bottom of the to-do list,

sometimes for years on end.

Whether you are a creating a new program, building a

stadium , or need legislative change, often actually doing

what you do gets in the way of understanding how you

could do it better.

It is for this reason our clients engage us to think of

nothing else but them and how they can do what they

do with more efficiency and profitability.

In return for a full Government Outcome and

Engagement Review we ask that Netball NSW invest

$16,850 +GST.

We can’t wait to be a part of generating results for

netball all over NSW.

8

Our hypothesis: ‘There is always government money

available, its just how you translate your influence

into an outcome.”

Our aim: “Reposition your organisation. Discover

your influence. Maximise it.”

We call this turning influence into outcomes.

.......and we are all about outcomes.

AFL$60 million for Metricon Stadium

The Australian Football League (AFL) is the premier sporting organisation in Australia. The League currently consists of 18 teams spread across five states, Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. In addition, teams have formal agreements with the Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory and Tasmania.

Founder and Managing Director of Bastion S+GO, Phil Martin, developed the unique Bastion S+GO method of government relations over his six years as General Manager, Government Relations at the AFL.

During his time at the AFL, Phil worked with governments of all political persuasions, at a Federal, State and Local level.

Phil quickly generated a reputation as a industry leader due to his success.

Over the 6 years Phil generated more than $2.4 billion in government funding for the AFL. This includes:

• 11 Stadiums;• Indigenous project funding;• Multicultural program funding;• Funding for community engagement programs; and• Regulation and legislative amendments.

Since founding Bastion S+GO, the AFL have become a foundation client. They employ Bastion S+GO to work directly with their strategy team to come up with news ways to engage with fans, develop new and innovative ways to use technology and seek alternative forms of government funding.

Cox Architects was established in 1962 and are widely regarded as one of the premier architecture firms, both in Australia and internationally.

Specialists in sports stadia and convention centres, Cox have worked on the SCG, MCG, AAMI Park, Manuka Oval, Adelaide Oval and soon, Perth Stadium.

In addition, they have completed projects in the Middle East, South East Asia and have partnered with American architecture firms in the past to share their experience.

Cox Architects employed the services of Bastion S+GO in November 2013 to assist in stakeholder relations across government, external partners and the media.

Prior to the partnership being formed between Bastion S+GO and Cox Architects, it was a not common practise for architecture firms to hire stakeholder management specialists to assist in generating new projects, and develop relationships with government.

In only 6 months working with Cox, Bastion S+GO have helped them achieve:• Relationships with key State Government Ministers in South

Australia, Western Australia and Victoria.• A place on an Asian Trade Tour with Prime Minister Tony Abbott

and industry leaders.• A successful tender bid for the new Perth Stadium.• A successful tender bid for the construction of the new Victorian

home of the ABC.• New relationships with key members of the sports and property

media.Total approximated value of contracts: $50 million
