HISTORY

The church was destroyed by greatfires of 1791, and catastrophicearthquakes of 1645 and 1863.

Seculars handled the repairs andrebuilding of succeedingstructures.

Stone reconstructions of thechurch followed in 1899, but thisMexican Baroque structure burned

down in 1928In 1928, another fire damaged thebuilding, and it was rebuilt by arch.Juan Nakpil

WORLD WAR II

Miraculously the church survived the Second World War despitesurrounding buildings being completely destroyed. The area of Quiapo and Sta. Cruz in Manila was devastated except for theQuiapo Church. Most of the nearby buildings in Carriedo andQuezon Boulevard were destroyed. San Sebastian church canalso be seen in this photo.

The C hurch NowTo meet the needs of an ever-increasingnumber of churchgoers, Msgr. JoseAbriol, together with Architect Jose Ma.Zaragoza and Engr. Eduardo Santiago,worked hard in 1984 to have the parishchurch and national shrine remolded

Thus this sacred edifice has doubled inholding capacity and has acquired amost sturdy columnless structure andmodern architectural beauty

Cardinal Sin blessed it on September 28,

1987The year after, Quiapo Church wasdeclared the Minor Basilica of the BlackNazarene. The Papal Nuncio, Most Rev.Bruno Torpigliani, blessed the altar of San Lorenzo Ruiz on February 1, 1988

F ACADE

Characterized by balance and symmetryCentral faade is marked by a porte cocherecontaining life-sized saints [one of which is SanPedro Bautista, one of the founders of the church]

First storey is divided into vertical panels with themain portal in the middle.The second storey has flat expanded walls andregular alternation of high-relief rounded pilasters. Atall treefoil-arched doorway is at the center with thesaints' niche flanking itOn top of the facade is an oval painting of the BlackNazareneOn each side of the central facade are the belltowers that are four storeys high.
