San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro (Saint Peter in the golden sky) is a Roman Catholic basilica (and a former cathedral) of the Augustinians. It inherited the name of “ciel d’oro” (golden sky) because the wooden ceiling of the early-Christian church was decorated with golden-coloured paint. It is mentioned by Dante, Petrarca and Boccaccio.A church of Saint Peter is recorded in Pavia in 604; it was renovated by Liutprand, King of the Lombards (who is buried here) between 720 and 725. The present Romanesque church was consecrated by Pope Innocent II in 1132.
The plain exterior is of brick, with sandstone quoins and window framing.
The church is the resting place for the remains of Augustine of Hippo, who died in 430 in his home diocese of Hippo Regius, and was buried in the cathedral there, during the time of the Vandals. According to Bede's True Martyrology, the body was removed to Cagliari, Sardinia by the Catholic bishops whom the Arian Vandal Huneric had expelled from north Africa.
Crypt
Augustine of Hippo (354 – 430), also known as St Augustine, was an early Christian theologian whose writings are considered very influential in the development of Western Christianity and Western philosophy.
Pastoral visit in San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro
Bede tells that the remains were subsequently redeemed out of the hands of the Saracens there— by Peter, bishop of Pavia and uncle of the Lombard king Liutprand— and deposited in the church of Saint Peter about the year 720.The controversy on the authenticity of the bones resulted in broadsides, pamphlets and books.
The left aisle has the frescoes of the fifteenth century that are typical of the Lombard school and some other of sixteenth century.
Liutprand was the King of the Lombards from 712 to 744 and is chiefly remembered for his Donation of Sutri, in 728, and his long reign, which brought him into a series of conflicts, mostly successful, with most of Italy. He is often regarded as the successful Lombard monarch. Within the Lombard kingdom he was considered a lawgiver of irreproachable Catholicity.
