What is Photosynthesis?

► Photosynthesis is the process in which green plants makes sugars and starches from carbon dioxide and water, in the presence of sunlight. (Deutrom and Bethell, 1999).

Oxygen is the waste product in Photosynthesis. The released oxygen in the air are used for humans to breathe.

In the photosynthesis equation, it shows that carbon dioxide and water is combined with the presence of sunlight

to produce glucose and oxygen.

►Photosynthesis happens when water is absorbed by the roots of green plants and is carried to the leaves by the xylem.

►Carbon dioxide is then obtained from air that enters the leaves through the stomata and diffuses to the cells containing chlorophyll.

►The green pigment; chloroplasts trap the photons of light energy and convert them to chemical energy.

Facts about Photosynthesis

►The purpose of photosynthesis is to make food for plants.

►All living organisms depend on the organic molecules synthesised by plants as a result of photosynthesis.

►Photosynthesis happens in all plants and some bacteria and algae.

►Photosynthesis provides us with most of the oxygen we need in order to breathe.

►We exhale the carbon dioxide needed by the plants.

►Plants are also crucial to human life because we rely on them as a source of food for ourselves and for the animals that we eat.
