•Movements include both the movements of the actors from place to place, and the “gestures” which are abstract movements of the actor’s limbs and body.

• Stage movements must be for a purpose.
![Page 5: Basic Rules for the Movements of Actors](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062615/5488a4e5b47959050d8b57b1/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
• A movement must express something either inherent in the text or suggested by it. What must happen is that any movement must mean something.

•Movement must not be confused with gestures, which is the hand movements, or movement of other parts of the body. Gesture is part of the actor’s equipment.

•The director is concerned with planning the large movements about the stage.

1. Right and left are from the actor’s point of view when he is facing the audience.

5. Never be restless or fidget. Keeping still is very effective.
6. Every movement should be clear for nothing is worse than a blurred “throw-away” movement.

7. Use the hand nearest the object you are going to touch, and never mask the body with the other hand.
8. Never mask the actors.

10. Only in exceptional circumstances should the actor stand with his back to the audience, but this does not mean it should never happen.

11. Each movement should correspond exactly to the motive which causes it; The need of conversation makes it desirable to reserve such movements for important moments
