design is not readily adaptable tointercooler connections or for additionalside process loads. Exceptions to this maybe found in th e custom-built Europeandesigns of axial compressors.

WHEN TO USE AXIAL-CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSORSA combination of axial/centrifugal staging isused:a.

    b.

When fo r large inlet flows in excess of50,000 ACFM, higher compression dischargepressures above 150 psig are required. The centrifugal impellers placed at th e tai lend of axial compression stages optimize th elow flow-high head capability of th ecentrifugal stage, thereby reducing th eoverall length of th e rotor.

FUTURE TRENDSCompression machinery in any plant plays a keyrole. Careful aerodynamic, thermodynamic anddesign considerations ar e necessary as thereliable and eff icient operation of a plant isdependent on how the compressors ar e selected andoperated. In recent years much attention hasbeen directed to improve th e compressorrel iabil i ty through surveillence and efficiencythrough improved techniques in th e fabrication. Our knowledge of the limiting phenomena such assurge, stonewall and rotor dynamics needs furtheradvances such that the control systems andprocess operations can be adopted to fullyuti l ize th e complete range of performance withoutany precipitating damage. The materials ofconstruction is another area that needs ourattention. Materials need to be developed whichcould provide more confidence in predicting theirstress behaviour under corrosion, and cyclicfatigue. Improved machining, assembling andsurface finishing techniques fo r the aerodynamicflow paths in the compression machinery has beenrecently reported to have improved thecompression efficiency to a limited extent,Ref 5. Extensive equipment surveillance withdata logging and trending of rotor vibrations andbearing temperatures is rightfully becomingpopular in improving th e availability of th eturbomachinery in critical plant services. The advent of high pressure reinjection of
