    Basic Piano Fingering LessonHi All

    Today I will post a basic piano fingering lesson. This will help you to getacquainted with the basic fingering techniques which will also help you to playfluently. Before you get started with this tutorial I suggest you to go throughtheBasic Piano Tutorial,so that you are at least familiar with the Piano noteslayout.

    To start off with, let us first define a Middle-C. If you remember an octave in aPiano/Keyboard has 12 keys, each signifying a particular note. So if you have a5 octave piano/keyboard, you will have in total 61 keys. Have a look at thepicture below, your Piano/Keyboard might look like this.

    Each of the five octaves will have its C note. The picture below has the C notesmarked in blue :

    As you can see in the picture above, the Middle C has also been marked, whichstands as the third C from the extreme left.

    Now let us introduce some sort of numbering for your fingers also, fingers forboth of your hands. Have a look at the picture below :

    So, as you can see, your thumb is the number 1 finger.

    Now let us go down to actual business, the playing part.

    Practice For Right Hand -Locate the Middle-C on your Piano/Keyboard and place your finger number 1 (ofyour right hand) right on it. Next place your finger number 2 on the white keyimmediately next to Middle-C i.e on D. Place the rest of three fingers on thenext three white notes, i.e E, F and G.

    Now you should have all of your five fingers resting on the 5 white keys, C - D -E - F - Gstarting from your thumb. Make sure that your wrist is slightly abovethe level of the keys and your fingers are curved downwards.

    Play - Now keep your fingers on their position and play the following numberedpattern, one finger at a time :1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1. Make sure you dont move your hand, let your fingers do thework. Dont press more than one key at a time. The idea behind this is to createcontrol over your individual fingers. Initially you will find it little bit difficult,sometimes two or more fingers might press the keys. Practice enough to getrid of that and acquire significant command over your each finger.

    Practice For Left Hand -Locate the Middle-C, but this time since we will bedealing with the left hand, move 1 octave to the left. Place finger number 5 onthe C note, and subsequently the other fingers on the next white notes insequence. So basically now you will have your fingers 5-4-3-2-1 placed in thenotes C - D - E - F - G, in this order.

    Play -Keep your fingers in their respective positions, and play the followingnumbered pattern, one finger at a time: 5-4-3-2-1-2-3-4-5. As described abovefor the right hand, dont move your hand and make sure you press each noteindividually, one note at a time. Practice enough to acquire

    significant command over your each finger.

    Once you think that you are playing the above patterns quite well, you canadvance towards more complicated patterns. Few of them are given below :

    5-4-3-2-4-3-2-1--1-2-3-4-2-3-4-5Playing with both hands -Playing with both hands is something which requiressignificant practice to do. You need to train your mind to play simultaneously,with both hands.

    At first master the patterns described above and then try o play themsimultaneously, with fingers of both your hands operating together. You willfind it very difficult in the beginning. Practice hard, and you will soon find thatyou are getting hold of it.

    Basic Piano Notes :

    This section contains the basic overview

    of the piano notes. The illustration below is a replica of the layout of th e

    piano notes.Each note has been marked with its name.You must have already

    noticed that there are a set of white and black keys, white keys placed

    beneath the black ones. There is also a particular pattern in which these

    keys are placed. All of these will be illustrated in detail below.

    There are all total 12 notes in a piano,

    each identified by its unique name. Start looking at the picture from the

    extreme left. The first white key is marked as C. The note that immediately

    follows is a black key, marked as C#. Subsequent keys that follow are

    D,D#,E,F,F#,G,G#,A,B and C again.The same pattern of keys are repeated

    afterwards.

    Notice that after G# there is no H

    note...the next note in sequence is A, followed by B and then C again.

    It is very important to remember the keys

    corresponding to the notes, this stands as a basic requirement before

    proceeding any further with this tutorial.

    How To

    Remember The Notes :

    This section illustrates the pattern in the

    key layout of the Piano. You will find it extremely helpful as a way toremember the keys corresponding to the notes.

    As described already there are 12 notes in

    a piano : C,C#,D,D#,E,F,F#,G,G#,A, and B. If you start looking at one

    particular section of the Piano which starts with C and then following the

    notes C#, D.... upto B, you will notice that this section contains a

    collection of 7 white keys and 5 black keys.The white keys are laid down one

    after another, whereas the black keys have a layout of 2:3 i.e there are 2

    black keys one after another, then after a gap there are 3 black keys one

    after another.Now in order to identify the C note, you just have to look for

    the area with 2 black keys ( one after another ), the white key immediately

    previous to the first black key ( from left to right ) will be the C

    note.Once you have identified the C note, you can very well identify the

    others.

    There will be more than such regions in

    your keyboard/piano, starting from

    note C to B. Each of these are called octaves. Figure below shows

    these regions.

    Octave-1 Octave-2 Octave-3

    Octave-2 is at a higher pitch than

    Octave-1.Similarly Octave-3 is at a higher pitch than Octave-2, and so on. In

    terms of physics, the note C in Octave-2 has exactly double frequency than

    the note C in Octave-1.However you need not worry about the physics here,

    just try and get aquianted yourself with the notes and thier corresponding

    keys. Gradually you will find no difficulty in recognizing the keys.To

    re-iterate, this forms the base of Piano lessons, so build up a strong base

    for yourself before plunging into more complex lessons.

    Sharp Notes :

    The notes marked with the # sign signify

    the sharp notes e.g C# is pronounced as C sharp, D# is pronounced as D sharp

    etc.The black keys are the sharp keys. The notes C,D,F,G and A have their

    corresponding sharp keys, which are essentially the black keys, just after

    the correponding white keys for C,D,F,G and A.Have a look at the illustration

    below.

    The black key immediately following C note

    is the C sharp note.Similarly the black note immediately following D note is

    the D sharp note.There is no E# or B# note, as you can already see, as there

    is no black key following E or B keys.

    Flat Notes :

    The

    key immediately previous to a key in question is its corresposnding flat

    note. As for example the note immediately previous to note C is called C flat

    ( presented as Cb in notations ). However as you might figure out by looking

    at the piano layout in the above illustration, the immediate previous key to

    C is B.Basically we are referring to the same note here, but with different

    Start Playing Chords By YourselfHi Friends,

    One of the things budding piano and keyboard/synthesizer players often ask

    that how can they start playing the chords by themselves i.e how they can

    figure out the chords of a particular song without anyones help. So I thought

    it would be better to publish a post listing out few things which might

    answer their queries.

    Before plunging into the details, let me clarify that there is no hard and fast

    rule or formula which will enable you to figure out the chords straightaway.

    Music is all about passion, and it takes considerable practice and hardwork to

    attain greater levels. However, the good news is, if you are a true music lover,

    and have a good ear for music, its not that hard to learn the basics. Once youhave learned the basics, you can build up on that knowledge with time.

    We shall start now -

    1. First things first, get yourself acquainted with the piano notes and try to

    memorize them. Please visit my chord tutorial pages (Basic Piano

    Tutorial,Basic Chords Tutorial - Part 1,Basic Chords Tutorial - Part 2andBasic

    Chords Tutorial - Part 3) if you have not already done so. It is very importantthat you get familiar with the notes and their corresponding chords. With

    repeated practice, it will become your second nature, for instance, if we talk

    about the note F, then you should be immediately able to play the chords F

    major and F minor chords in the keyboard.

    2. Dont jump into trying to figure out the chords as soon as you listen the song

    first time. Hearing a song time n again, in order imbibe it within yourself is

    equally important. As you listen the song, the brain parses the song internally,

    trying to identify patterns within it. It also tries to identify areas where the

    chords change ( it is not only important to identify which chords are used in the

    song, it is equally important to identify the areas where the chords have been

    used and at which syllable the change takes place ). As you gain experience,

    you will realize that much of the pattern of the song can be figured out simply

    by listening to it carefully few times.

    3. Play along - Once you have imbibed the song within yourself, try playing the

    song ( not the chords) in your piano or keyboard/synthesizer. Keep the song in

    a loop in your song player.You donot need to be accurate with the notes while

    you play, but just try to identify the notes used in the song. This will give youan overall feel of the song. You dont even need to play the whole song, just try

    to get the mukhra of the song while you play along. Once you are able to

    identify the notes used in the mukhra of the song, the rest of the task becomes

    relatively easy.

    4. Having identified the notes in the mukhra of the song ( i.e the startingphrases of the song ), you now have the task of identifying the chord which will

    be used. If you had gone through the basic chord tutorial pages in my blog, you

    must have learned that each note has its corresponding major and minor chord.

    In case of major chords, the notes that will be used for a particular note are as

    follows : The root note i.e the chord for the note which you want to play, the

    4th reed counting from the root note and finally the 7th reed starting from the

    root note.As for

    example, if we want to play C Major, the notes in use will be C (root note),E (

    4th reed counting from the root note ) and G ( 7th reed starting from the root

    note ).

    In case of minor chords, the notes that will be used for a particular note are

    as follows : The root note i.e the chord for the note which you want to play,

    the 3rd reed counting from the root note and finally the 7th reed starting

    from the root note.As for example, if we want to play C Minor, the notes in

    use will be C (root note),D# ( 3rd reed counting

    from the root note ) and G ( 7th reed starting from the root note ).

    5. We will take a concrete example here: Consider the song "Ya Ali" from the

    movie gangster.

    I found out while playing along, that the starting lines consists of the notes

    B,C,E,D,F#,A.

    It goes like this Ya (B note) A-(C note) Li(E note). So simple observation will

    reveal that the starting line must constitute of a chord with these notes. Thechord Em consists of the notes E, G and B.Play the chord while the first line of

    the song plays. Yes, it matches perfectly. To re-iterate, you must have good

    ears to play good music. Whether the chord you are playing matches with that

    of the song is purely your ability to match the two sounds based on your

    judgement. Of course that comes with experience.

    6. If you cannot figure out which chord corresponds to the starting phrases of

    the song, try to figure out which note is being used the most in the starting few

    lines of the song. Try experimenting with all the chords which contains thatparticular note. Chances are that one of them will surely match.

    7. Once you have figured out the starting chord, you can formulate very easily

    which other chords will be used in the song. In this case since Em is the starting

    chord, so definitely the chords D ( minus 1 note), chord C ( minus 2 notes), B (

    minus 2.5 notes ),chord G( plus 1.5 notes) and Am ( plus 2.5 notes ) will beused.

    8. Now again play along the song, the entire mukhra. Pick the points where the

    notes are changing, also try to figure out where the chords are changing in the

    actual song by listening carefully. The areas where you find that the chord have

    changed, find the corresponding note being played at that part of the song.

    Since you already have the list of chords which will be used in the song, by and

    large, it will be easy for you to identify the chord which is being played at that

    part of the song, by matching it with the note being used in that chord.

    9. With a little bit of effort, you will soon be able to figure out the chords being

    used in the song. I will now post the chords for the song Ya Ali-
