WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT• Introduces you to the Emergency Action Plan.
• Provides information for you to be better prepared before an emergency.
• Identifies resources so you can make informed decisions during an emergency.

SEVERE WEATHER• Thunderstorms, winds,
lightening, tornadoes, etc.
• Get inside / State inside
• Interior of lowest level
• Stay away from windows and doors.

FIRES & FIRE ALARMS• Remember E.A.C.H.
• E – Evacuate the building and stay out.
• A – Alert others.• C – Call 911 for help.• H – Have a plan (including
alternate routes out).
• Proceed to the Emergency Assembly Area for your building.

EARTHQUAKES• Take cover and protect your head, neck, and torso.
• Under sturdy furniture.• Against an inside wall.• Away from glass or heavy furniture that can fall over.
• Remain indoors until the shaking has stopped.
• Evacuate when safe and move away from buildings and other things that may collapse or fall (telephone poles, trees, etc.).

MEDICAL EMERGENCIES• Check the scene for safety.
• Check the victim for consciousness, airway, breathing, and circulation (bleeding).
• Call 911.
• Care for the illness or injuries within the scope of your training.
• Do not move people unless absolutely necessary.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS• Evacuate the release or
spill area.
• Secure the location.
• Isolate any exposed people.
• Call 911.
• Shutdown HVAC systems if possible.

BOMB THREATS• If you receive the call, find out as much
information as possible.
• Call 911.
• Alert officials to any strange items noticed in your work area.
• Evacuate the location.
• Stay out of the area until officials allow entry.

PSYCHOLOGICAL CRISIS• Call 911 if situation becomes violent or life
threatening.
• Refer students to the APSU Counseling Center.
• Refer employees to Human Resources’ Employee Assistance Program.

HOSTILE INTRUDER• Includes verbally or physically
aggressive persons, hostage takers, or active shooters.
• Call 911 as soon as possible.
• If possible, secure your immediate area by locking or barricading doors and closing the blinds.
• Stay calm, quiet, and out of sight.

• Stop germs by covering your cough, washing hands (or using sanitizer).
• Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth.

APSU EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN• Developed from the International Association of
Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) model.
• Provides information regarding emergencies and suggestions about what actions to take in the event of an emergency.
• Base for the Building Emergency Action Plans.
• Will be introduced during the fall semester.

• Food – 3 day supply of non-perishables + manual can opener.
• Battery or hand-crank radio/NOAA radio + extra batteries.
