Slump
The concrete slump test measures the workability offresh concrete by indirectly assessing the shearingresistance of the plastic concrete under its own weight. The test specification (ASTM C143) dates all the wayback to 1922!

Slump
To perform the test, a conical metal mold called aslump cone is filled with fresh concrete. The slumpcone is 12" tall and has a diameter of 4" at the topand 8" at the bottom.
As with the dry-rodded unit weight test for aggregate, the mold is filled in three lifts of equal volume andeach lift is rodded 25 times with a tamping rod toeliminate any voids in the specimen.

Slump
The concrete is then struck off level with the top ofthe mold and the mold is carefully lifted verticallyupwards, allowing the now-unsupported concrete tosubside (slump).
The test measurement is the change in the height ofthe concrete from the supported to the unsupportedcondition. This is called the slump, and is measuredto the nearest ¼ inch.

Slump
The slump test is an index test. The higher the slumpthe more fluid is the concrete. Thus, it can tell yousomething about the consistency of the concrete.
The shape of the slumped concrete can also tell yousomething about the cohesion of the concrete. Ashear slump indicates a lack of cohesion and possiblesegregation. A collapse slump suggests a mix that istoo wet or has too little cement and may be harsh.
