The only one of these three completely different WordPresses where you can actually host a

blog for free is WordPress.com. But should you host your blog there?

Web Hosting – It s ot a good idea to reate a free log at WordPress. o if ou re pla i g to monetize your blog content in any way (displaying ads, sending people to your sales page,

including affiliate links and the like) – or even use it for business. For one thing, this is against

WordPress. o s rules.

If you disregard these rules, you are quite likely to wake up one morning and find out your blog

has disappeared off the face of the planet, without a word of explanation. And all your hard

work has gone up in smoke for some violation that will probably never be explained to you. Yes,

life is hard, and even blogging there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Your best solution? Host your WordPress blog on your own domain. (Yes, you can absolutely

use the WordPress CMS if ou do t host our log o WordPress. o .

Choosing a Domain Name – Be sure, however, to choose a strong Domain name (either your

own name, a catchy business name you want to brand, or an easy-to-pronounce-and-

remember keyword and/or location based name; for e a ple: ool at lu . o . Yes, . o ould e shorter, at hier a d easier to ra d a d re e er – but that will only

work if you want people who already know that acronym to find you.)

Registering Your Domain Name – Here s a other o o area of o fusio , for people who

are new to running their own blog or site: Domain registration.

Your domain is your home on the net. For example, say your name is Jane Bloggs: You might

pa a e hosti g o pa to host www.JaneBloggs.com for ou.

Your domain URL (address sits o our e host s assi e ser er o puter. That s its home.

But here s here people get a little o fused: The perso ho registers our do ai a either be your web hosting company (e.g. BlueHost) or a separate registration company.

You do t ha e to use BlueHost, of ourse: You a pi k a d hoose any web hosting company.

– whichever one you use, just make sure that the company is WordPress-friendly. At the end

of this section, I share how to use another popular site called Hostgator to use for your blogging

activity. If you chose to go with another host, the combined knowledge will help you work

through and start your own WordPress blog with the new host.

Whichever hosting company you choose, make sure it has cPanel (a control panel), and

supports PHP, MySQL5 (or the latest version of MySQL) and WordPress – and, finally, that it

supports either Fantastico DeLuxe or Simple Scripts.

If ou a t fi d the i for atio ou eed o the sig -up page, look for a Features ta :

Bottom line: There are many types of web hosting companies – and not all are ideal for

blogging!

Unlimited Domains – If you are planning to host more than one website or blog for your

usi ess, do hoose a e host that offers u li ited do ai s: It s etter for i ter et searchability to have each URL (domain address; e.g. www.whateveryouwant.com in its own

separate do ai , rather tha as a add-o do ai or su -do ai .

If each site is in an entirely separate domain, it can also be transferred, should you ever decide

to sell it. (Note: You will have to purchase (register) each new domain name as you add these

– either from BlueHost or from your chosen Domain registration company.)

Most reliable web hosting companies offer one free domain registration with your sign up, so

there s o eed for a separate registratio .

A word of caution: Most domain registration companies will offer amazingly cheap web

hosting (or even free web hosting). I would not recommend using your domain registration

company for webhosting: Ofte our site ill e la ed ith ads ou do t k o a out or the provide poor support, obscure documentation or frequent site do pro le s – as well as

bandwidth limitations.

You reall do t a t to sig up a d dis o er our e e host does t ha e a Pa el , does t support the M SQL data asi g eeded for WordPress , and wants you to upgrade to

their $179.95 per ear pla e ause ou e e eed our 15 a d idth… i the first eek!)

By all means use Domain registration companies for easy multiple and single domain

registration and inexpensive domain transfers, however.

When you purchase your domain name and hosting, there is no need to change your name

servers to point at your hosting. This means you can jump straight into installing WordPress.

Those used to Fantastico are going to want to over-complicate things when changing over to a

Do NOT watch the video for installing WordPress, however: If you follow the instructions, you

may end up with the following error message:

If this happens, you have two choices:

1. Contact Tech Support and ask them to fix it for you and set up your blog. (They will:

And all you will have to do is make note of the log-in information and password, log in,

and proceed straight to Se tio Three: Custo izi g our Blog , skimming over the next

few pages.)

2. If you prefer more control, or want to know what to do the next time you want to add a

blog, simply follow the instructions below. (Yes. In spite of the error message.)

The following method has worked for me every time – even after I have asked Tech Support to

Okay, earlier I promised to show you how to use Hostgator for WordPress installation too.

If you are happy with Blue Host, you can skip this section. Many of my blogging clients are

using Hostgator and they are a dream to work with.

One hosting company that does have Fantastico is HostGator (http://www.hostgator.com).

They are very inexpensive, and they have cPanel and Fantastico. Use the coupon code

ZerotoBlogger or ZerotoSocialMedia to get a discount.

Step Three: Install WordPress

When you sign up with your hosting company, you should receive an email that gives you

instructions for logging into cPanel on your server. You can contact your hosting company for

Once you log in, locate the link for Fantastico. This is usually about 2/3rd

OR

Note: there is an dash between wp and admin, like this wp-admin.

If you forget your username and password, you can request your password be mailed to you.

WordPress will send your username and password to the email address you entered when you

installed it.

O e ou e fou d out of the i stallatio as a su ess, it s ti e to ake a fe t eaks i order to set up a effe ti e log. Do t skip the e t se tio , e ause a WordPress log is t set up

The best idea for image sources: Take your own photographs. Failing that, only use

photographs in the public domain (with public domain licensing) or ask permission to use

photos. A website that I use frequently is PhotoPin.com after downloading the image it gives

you the HTML code to credit the image creator.

(Government websites and Wikipedia are often a great source of public domain photographs:

Do still check the licensing, however – sometimes government photos do have licensing

restrictions.)

There is, of course, a lot more to learn – such as pre-scheduling posts, adding more plugins,

tweaking your CSS, adding audio or video plugins, and more – but get comfortable with

blogging and make some posts first, rather than trying to jump from WordPress beginner to

expert all in one day.

Most importantly – have fun and enjoy blogging!
