Basic Audio EditingClass Description: This course is designed to assist patrons learn basic audio editing skills. Proper mic handling techniques, different microphone types, cable types, basic signal flow, tracking and powering on procedures were covered in previous courses.

Create your Session

1. Launch Presonus Studio One to see the screenshot below.2. Confirm Setup, and click create new song.

Chose Empty Song Name Song Click OK

3. Name song, chose Empty Song, click OK. (You can change song length and tempo) Don’t worry about Sample rate and resolution right now.

4. Import Audio for editing. Click Song > Import File...

5. Navigate to file location. Select file then click Open

6. A track will be created automatically. Click edit to see enlarged wave forms.

7. Use range tool (Looks like cross hairs) to select the region to be deleted.

8. If you want to delete region and slide the next region forward in time, click: Edit > Delete Time

9. If you want to preserve the audio spacing simply press delete on keyboard to delete selected region.

10. After pressing delete the region is gone, but audio locations are preserved. This is a more common editing technique for music.

9. The regions can now be moved independently on the timeline.

10. After repeating steps 4 & 5 to import music, Right click in this area to show/hide volume automation.

11. Click the arrow next to display and select volume.

12. This will reveal the volume automation. Note that it is a straight line indicating the same volume for entire track.

13. Click on the line twice near the front of the track to create automation points. Then grab second point and drag down to desired volume. (See #14 screenshot for a visual representation of how it should look after dragging down)

14. Create two more automation points at the end of the speaking part. Then drag the last one back up to beginning volume level

15. Your final automation should look similar to this. Volume dropping during speaking part then coming back up. You can drag the automation points around to experiment and balance the vocal and music together. When playing back, watch the music fader go up and down with your automation points!

Export Recording to Take Home 16. Select portion of song to export by revealing markers and sliding start and end markers to desired locations.

17. Next select Song > Export Mixdown

18. Confirm export parameters. Filename, Format and Export Range. Click OK.

Your export will default to a Mixdown folder in your song folder. Current default is: desktop>Songs If your plan is to burn to a CD use the following format settings: Type: WAV Bitrate: 16 Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz
