Staining of Consumer Paints
Consumer paints are exposed to a variety
materials that cause temporary or permanent
staining
Stains can be broadly classified into two groups :
• Hydrophilic - Wet Paint Surface and Diffuse into the
Film
• Hydrophobic - Cause swelling of the paint film and
migration of stain materials (e.g. pigments in
lipstick)
Challenges to the formulator
• Achieving optimum stain resistance and removal
across various staining materials
• Achieving an optimum balance of all key paint
properties
