Colouration of rubberMicrolen® - MC Preparations

Microlen® preparations from BASF

Microlen® Preparations are pigments pre-dispersed in LMPE

Preparations offer advantages over pigments in ease of use,

they are free flowing, low dusting and easier to disperse.

Get full value out of the pigment due to improved dispersion,

less pigment to achieve colour.

Fully tested by BASF in a range of rubber types.

Colouration of RubberMicrolen® MC – Further Information

The Microlen® MC products are used globally for the colouration of rubber

The use of Microlen® MC gives excellent & problem free colouration of rubber.

Complete distribution will be obtained at a temperature of ca. 60-70°C. (Melt

traject of the carrier LMPE is 60 – 110°C)

Optimal pigment dispersion results in excellent reproducibility & batch to batch

consistency can be achieved. (Less influence from changes in equipment.)

The usage of Microlen® MC in flooring applications improves the gloss!

BTC products for the rubber industryLight Stabilisation

Photo-oxidation is initiated by the action of photons onto the rubber

article

Photo-oxidative degradation results from the combined action of light

and oxygen

The degradation process proceeds analogous to the auto-oxidation

cycle

= Photodegradation

Page 22: BASF and BTC Supporting the Environment & The Future Of The Rubber Market. BTC - BASF MPG R… ·  · 2016-12-29BASF and BTC Supporting the Environment & The Future Of The Rubber

Light Stabilisation Rubbers absorb UV-light due to their intrinsic chemical structure

If there is no light, there is no photo-degradation

Page 23: BASF and BTC Supporting the Environment & The Future Of The Rubber Market. BTC - BASF MPG R… ·  · 2016-12-29BASF and BTC Supporting the Environment & The Future Of The Rubber

Author/BTC Month/YearCONFIDENTIAL Page 23

BTC products for the rubber industryLight Stabilisation – Two main routes

UV Absorbers

Absorb harmful UV radiation and dissipation as heat

Protect the polymer bulk; in thickness sections >0.1 mm (Lambert-Beer)

Not effective at protecting surfaces or thin sections

Hindered Amine Light Stabilisers (HALS)

Scavenge radicals

Activated during light exposure

Protect bulk & surface

Independent of article’s thickness

Conventional HALS are deactivated by strong acid, NOR HALS are not.

Combination of HALS & UV absorber gives highest level of

protection.
