Hoping to ride the momentum of theirsecond-best winning season in programhistory, the Utes are optimistic for greatthings in 2003. Last season, Utah posteda 33-26 overall record and was 16-14 inMountain West Conference play, goodfor second place. The team also led thenation in doubles (154) and ranked in thetop 25 nationally in batting average,scoring and slugging percentage.

“Last season was a fantastic run byour team, and winning 33 games is anincredible feat,” says Head Coach TimEsmay.

The Utes lost six starters and12 letterwinners from last year’ssquad, including pitchers MitchMaio, Cheyenne Rushton andJason Wylie, infielders NateWeese, Donald Hawes and AdamCastleton, and outfielder BritPannier. Maio compiled a 9-1record and was the Co-MWCPlayer of the Year. Rushton postedan 8-6 record with 63 strikeoutsand Wylie was 7-7 on the yearwith 76 strikeouts in 19 starts.

Weese had a team-high 17home runs, 60 RBI, 148 total basesand 19 stolen bases, while Pannierknocked a team-leading 26doubles, which ranked fifth in theNCAA. Hawes was third on theteam in stolen bases, whilecatching nine runners stealing,and Castleton led the team with a.369 batting average and ranked18th nationally in runs per game(1.24). Weese, Hawes andCastleton were all second-team all-MWC picks.

Utah will look to junior MikeWestfall and sophomore MattCiaramella as the offensive leadersthis year. Westfall, a two-time all-conference honoree, was secondon the team last season with a .356batting average and 80 hits. In his debutseason, Ciaramella excelled defensively incenterfield and notched the third-bestbatting average on the team of .345. Hewas the lone Ute named to the MWC all-tournament team.

Below is a position by positionbreakdown of the 2003 Utes.

pitchers who saw time last year. Though ayoung staff built mostly of sophomoresand freshmen, Esmay believes this groupwill get the job done. “This is a talentedgroup,” Esmay claims. “They are short onexperience, but not on ability.”

Leading the way will be junior SeanOverholt, who made 20 appearances forthe Utes, including four starts. “I expectSean to have breakthrough year,” Esmaysays.

Also returning is a core of sopho-mores − Doug Mackay, Brady Martinezand Clay Westmoreland − all of whom sawaction last season. “All three of them gottheir feet wet last year,” Esmay notes.“That experience will prove invaluablethis season.”

Mackay made four starts, with 20appearances, while Westmoreland posted

a 1-0 record in 17 appearances. Martinezfinished the year with a 2-1 record in 15appearances and boasted the second bestERA of the returners.

Esmay also expects newcomers DerekLarsen, Ryan Florence, Jason Price andBen Buck to make an immediate impact.“Look for those guys to demand inningsright away,” he notes.

Larsen was a two-time Class 4A Utahall-state selection. He tallied a 9-1 recordas a senior while recording 96 strikeoutswith a 2.10 ERA.

Florence served as the teamcaptain at Utah Valley StateCollege during the 2002 season,when he had a 5-7 record with a4.01 ERA. In 2001, he went 6-2with a 3.75 ERA.Price threw three no hitters and

recorded six shutouts during hiscareer at Copper Hills HS in Utah.He compiled a 1.62 career ERAwith 208 strikeouts and only oneloss (16-1) during his three letteryears.Buck is the career (18) and single

season (9) saves leader at LamarCommunity College, where heplayed for the past two years. Healso holds the single season (1.06)and career (2.07) ERA records atLamar. While there, his team went106-17, with two region champion-ships and a third-place finish inthe Junior College World Series.In addition, sophomores Jared

Snyder and Brett Sundberg willsee time on the mound. Snyder,who had a 4.44 ERA in 18 appear-ances last year, will once againsplit time between the catcher andpitcher positions, while Sundbergwill also play third base. “Thosetwo guys will not only help us onthe position player side, but theywill also pitch,” Esmay claims.

things from Jared after a solid freshmanyear,” Esmay says.

In addition, Utah picked up transfersWick Udy and Nate Schlieman. Udytransferred from Oregon State, where hehit .327 for the Beavers last year. “Wickwill add much-needed experience as hesaw quality play last year in the Pac-10,”Esmay says.

Schlieman sat out last season atEckerd College due to injury, but posteda .368 batting average at HighlandCommunity College during the 2001season.

“We’ve had all-conference catchersfor the past three or four years,” Esmaynotes. “Look for these guys to continuethat tradition this year.”

solid this season. “We are very talentedand have a lot of depth in the infield thisseason,” Esmay claims.

Leading the way isWestfall, the two-time all-conference third baseman.Backing him up will beSundberg.

At shortstop, Esmaylooks to start CortlandWilson, a junior tranfer fromHawaii. Last year, Wilsonstarted 30 of the 31 gameshe played for the RainbowWahine.

Redshirt junior JaredPena will start at secondbase. Pena sat out lastseason after transferringfrom Salt Lake CommunityCollege, where he started 43of the 47 games he playedand finished with 42 hitsand 30 RBI.

Freshmen middleinfielders Tyler Kmetko andRyan Khoury will back upWilson and Pena. “Thosetwo can play short stop andsecond base and will be ourmiddle back-ups,” Esmayexplains.

Senior JakeJordison, who spent

last season as the designated hitter,will start at first base. Jordison hadseven home runs and 32 RBI lastseason and was a second-team jucoAll-American at Dixie State Collegein 2001.

the Utes after boasting a .983 fielding per-centage and committing just two errors lastseason.

“Mike and Matt will provide strong lead-ership and maturity,” Esmay says.

Junior transfer Eric Chevalier will startin right field. Chevalier transferred to Utahfrom Tacoma Community College, where hewas a two-time all-conference selection.

Redshirt sophomore T.R Gourley will bethe Utes’ utility player in the outfield. Esmaysays he will play all three spots and willalso DH.

Tim Esmay enters his seventh season as Utah’s head baseballcoach. He comes into the season with a 167-167-1 overall recordand a 87-91 career conference mark. During his six seasons at theU., 14 of his athletes have gone on to play professional baseball.Most recently, Nate Weese, Mitch Maio, Donnie Saba, Jason Wylieand Donald Hawes signed with professional teams.

In 1997, his first season directing the program, Esmay did whatno Ute coach had done in 32 years when he led Utah to a WACdivision title and a 36-21-1 record. The Utes posted a 22-8 recordin the Northern Division that year. They also set nine schoolrecords and Esmay was named the 1997 Louisville Slugger WACCoach of the Year.

In his second year, the Utes finished with a 23-31 record andwent 12-18 in the WAC to place third in the Northern Division.Esmay coached two major league draft picks in John Summers(12th round to the Dodgers) and Nate Forbush (15th round to theTigers).

In ‘99, the Utes finished 22-30 with an 8-20 WAC record. Thatseason, three of Esmay’s former athletes played in the minorleagues: Lance Ericksen (Astros), Ryan Johnerson (Reds) and JaredLarsen (Toronto).

During the 2000 season, Utah compiled a 26-30 record whilegoing 15-15 in the new MWC. Esmay led the Utes to a third-placefinish in the league.

The Utes finished third in the league posting a 27-29 overallmark and a 14-16 conference record in ‘01. Esmay led the Utes toone of the their biggest wins in history when they upset No. 7Nebraska in a tournament in Albuquerque, N.M. Catcher ChrisShelton was named MWC Player of the Year and Mike Westfallreceived Freshman of the Year honors under Esmay’s guidance.

Last season, Esmay guided Utah to a 33-26 overall and 16-14conference record. The 33 wins is the second most in school his-tory since 1963, and the second-place league finish is the Utes

best since joining the MWC in ‘99. Senior pitcher Mitch Maiogarnered 2002 MWC Co-Player of the Year honors. Last year alsosaw the fall of several team and individual records under Esmay’sdirection.

The Scottsdale, Ariz., native started his coaching career as agraduate assistant at Arizona State. He stayed at ASU for fiveyears as an assistant coach under Jim Brock and Jeff Pentland (thecurrent hitting coach for the Chicago Cubs). Esmay coached fortwo years at Brophy College Prep High School in Phoenix, Ariz.,before returning to Arizona State as a volunteer assistant to Brockin ‘94. He coached at Grand Canyon University in 1995, then madehis move to Utah as Bill Kinneberg’s assistant in ‘96. He also servedas a head coach in the Arizona Summer Collegiate League from1988-93.

A talented player in his own right, Esmay played at ArizonaState from 1986-87 and was a member of the ASU team that ap-peared in the 1987 College World Series. Esmay hit .308 in his twoyears as a Sun Devil and was named to the all-West Region team.He played at Scottsdale Community College from 1985-86, wherehe was named a junior college All-American.

Esmay received a bachelor’s degree in physical education fromArizona State in ‘88. The 37-year-old Esmay and his wife Joell arethe parents of two sons, Tucker and Cooper.

John Flores is in his seventh year as the Ute pitching coach.Under his tutelage, the Utes have broken 17 pitching recordsand tied five others in the past five seasons. Flores also headsthe recruiting efforts for the Ute program.

Flores previously coached at Grand Canyon University asan assistant. Prior to his Grand Canyon appointment, hecoached the pitchers at Brophy College Prep High School(Ariz.) from 1993-95. He also served as a coach in the Best of theWest Hawaiian Baseball Classic from 1994-96.

Flores was an outfielder and pitcher for Shoreline Commu-nity College in Seattle, Wash., in 1989-90. He was named league

MVP in ‘90. Hetransferred toGrand Canyon forhis junior andsenior seasons,where he washonored as theteam’s Pitcher ofthe Year in ‘92.

Flores earned abachelor’s degreein businessmanagement fromGrand Canyon in‘94. The Prosser,Wash., native andhis wife Cindy havetwo children,Lauren and John.

Former Ute Matt Eeles is in his second season as an assis-tant coach. Eeles played outfield for the U. during the 1996 and‘97 seasons, and was team captain his senior year. Beforetransferring to Utah, he played two years at Cerritos JuniorCollege in Norwalk, Calif. At Cerritos, Eeles was voted first-teamall-conference and named the Dallas Moon Award winner duringhis sophomore year.

The California native spent four years coaching at MayfairHigh School in Lakewood, Calif., before returning to Utah. Hewas also a coach for the Cerritos Junior College summerprogram in ‘98 and ‘99, and helped with Cal State Fullerton’scamps in ‘98, ‘99 and 2001.

Eeles is responsible for working with the hitters andoutfielders. He is also in charge of defensive and base runningstrategies. The California native received an associate of artsdegree in ‘95 from Cerritos and a bachelor’s of science degree inhealth education in ‘97 from the U.

Hackett

Dr. Chris Hill, Utah’s director ofathletics and special assistant to thepresident, has carried Utah athletics intonational prominence in the last 14 years.Hill was just 37 years old when he wasnamed director of athletics back inOctober of 1987.

His vision reaches beyond theathletics department. Since 1998, he hasbeen the special assistant to U. presidentDr. Bernie Machen and a member of theUniversity’s senior administrative cabinet.On a national level, Hill was the NCAAappointed chairman of the powerfulChampionships/Competition Cabinet from1997-98. He now serves as the MountainWest Conference representative on theNCAA Management Council and is on theManagement Council’s administrativecommittee. He was also chair of thetransition committee for the MountainWest Conference.

But his biggest strides have come oncampus, where his tenure has beencharged with capital improvements, anemphasis on student-athlete support,academics, and winning programs. In theMarch 18 issue of U.S. News and WorldReport, Utah was ranked among the top20 athletics programs in the nation, basedon winning percentage, graduation rate,number of sports and gender equity.

Hill is the driving force behind Utah’sathletics success and its numerousnational-caliber facilities. His fund-raisingefforts reached an international stagewhen beautiful $50 million Rice-EcclesStadium hosted the Opening and ClosingCeremonies for the 2002 Salt LakeOlympic Winter Games. Also close toHill’s heart is the new, high tech KennethP. Burbidge Jr. Family Athletics AcademicCenter. Opened in March 2001, theBurbidge Center offers unparalleledacademic opportunities for the U.’svarsity student-athletes.

On the playing field, Utah is aconference and even national powerunder Hill’s leadership. One of the manyhighlights was the men’s basketball teammaking the 1998 NCAA Final Four andplaying Kentucky in the championshipgame. Utah has also captured multiplenational championships in gymnasticsand skiing since he became director ofathletics, and the football team hasappeared in six bowl games. Utah teamswon the “big three” championships–football and men’s and women’s basket-ball–in the inaugural year of the MountainWest Conference in 1999-2000.

Hill positioned himself for the topathletics job after two highly successfulyears as the director of development forthe Crimson Club. The New Jersey nativefirst came to the U. as a graduate assistantbasketball coach (1973-74) under BillFoster. He was an assistant under JerryPimm from 1979-81.

Between his coaching and administra-tive stints with Utah athletics, Hill wasexecutive director of United CerebralPalsy of Utah (1981-85), where he raised$750,000 in federal, state and privatefunding for a housing project for peoplewith severe physical disabilities.

Among his many awards are a 1981Milton Bennion Fellowship, 1984 UtahRecreation Therapy Association Out-standing Service award and 1996 Utah MSSportsperson of the Year award. He was a1998 Inductee into the Jersey Shore Hallof Fame. Hill currently serves on theRegence BlueCross BlueShield Board ofDirectors. In 2001, the National Consor-tium for Academics and Sports gave himits Degree Completion and Outreach andCommunity Service Honor Award.

As an undergraduate, Hill letteredthree years and was co-captain of the1971-72 Rutgers basketball team. Hisbachelor’s degree from Rutgers is in matheducation (1972). He also has a master’s ineducation (Utah, 1974), and a Ph.D. ineducational administration (Utah, 1982).Hill taught in the University’s specialeducation department from 1983-85. Hecoached boys basketball at Granger High(Utah) from 1975-79, winning 4A coach ofthe year his first year.

Hill, 52, is married to the former Kathy

Amy Hackett, an 18-year veteran ofathletic administration, is in her sixth yearas associate athletics director at the Uni-versity of Utah.

Hackett came to Utah in the summer of1996 from Santa Clara University, where sheserved as associate athletics director andsenior woman administrator from 1990-96,and was the acting director of athletics inthe summer of 1992. She held the positionof Broncos’ assistant athletics director formarketing and promotions from 1986-90.

At Utah, Hackett is responsible for nineof Utah’s 19 sports. She also oversees thebusiness office and events coordinatingareas. She, along with Utah Athletics Di-rector Dr. Chris Hill, represents the U. atMountain West Conference and NCAAmeetings.

Hackett has served on the NCAA’s Mi-nority Opportunities and Interests Commit-tee since 2000. She served on the NCAADivision I Women’s Soccer Committee from1993-99 and was the committee chair from1998-99. Hackett was an at-large represen-tative of the National Association of Colle-giate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Ex-ecutive Committee from 1998-2002.

Hackett graduated from Oregon Statein 1983 with a degree in physical education(athletic administration emphasis). Sheearned a master’s degree in sports adminis-tration from Ohio in 1986. Hackett has anewborn son, Quinn.

Cronin, a clinical instructor in the U.department of special education. Theyhave two children: Aly and Christopher.Aly, who is married to former Ute skierRyan Forsyth, played soccer for theUniversity of Oregon and received hermaster’s of social work degree from Utahin 2002. Christopher is a junior at theUniversity of Utah.

The University of Utah, a hub forhigher education from the Rockies to theSierras, boasts an academic reputationthat is rivaled only by its breathtakinglygorgeous location. To the east rise the11,500 foot, snow-capped peaks of theWasatch Mountains. To the west theGreat Salt Lake shimmers beneath theOquirrh Mountains. The University, which offers morethan 120 undergraduate degree programsand 93 graduate majors, draws its 25,000-plus student population from all 50 statesand 102 foreign countries. Ninety-fivepercent of Utah’s faculty members holdthe highest degree in their fields.

Founded in 1850, the U. has estab-lished itself as an international center formedical and engineering research. Itmanages one of the three most successfultechnology parks in the U.S., with morethan 40 high-tech companies created byUniversity faculty. The Huntsman CancerInstitute and the Howard HughesMedical Institute make Utah the primaryresearch company in the nation forunderstanding the genetic basis ofcancer. Utah is ranked in the top 35 (of550) research universities in the mostrecent National Science Foundationrankings. Nationally, the U. is listed 19thin corporate funding for research.

Utah is also a hub in the computerworld. The Center for High PerformanceComputing links the U. to major aero-space industries, high-tech manufacturersand research companies. The Departmentof Computer Science is ranked in the top20 computer science research depart-ments in the nation. The U. was namedone of five finalists in the sciencecategory of the 1998 ComputerworldSmithsonian Awards. Back in 1970, the U.became the fourth node on the Internet.

The annual issue of U.S. News &World Report ranked Utah as a secondtier University in 2001, which places theU. somewhere between 52-115 amongAmerican colleges (rankings outside thetop 50 are listed alphabetically). Only six

U.S. News & World Report was alsoimpressed with Utah’s athletic department,placing the U. on its Honor Roll of CollegeSports along with 19 other schools. Utahis one of just three schools west of theMississippi to make the list.

The University of Utah, one of thestate’s largest employers, generates some$500 million annually in non-tax revenue. Ithas the only medical, social work, architec-ture and pharmacy schools in a multi-statearea. Its many top-flight facilities include acenter for dance, a health sciences center,public radio and television stations, threelibraries and numerous centers andlaboratories devoted to research.

The U. provides a lot of fun, too. Overa million people enjoy the University ofUtah’s athletic, entertainment and culturalofferings each year. The student in “student-athlete” gota big boost in March of 2001, when thestunning new Kenneth P. Burbidge Jr.Family Athletics Academic Centeropened on the U. campus. Designedsolely to serve the U.’s varsity student-athletes, the Burbidge Center is withoutpeer in terms of aesthetics, technologyand academic service.

The 10,000 square foot facility isalready a campus landmark, with itssweeping floor to ceiling, curved glasswall on the two-story north side. Itslocation is ideal for the population itserves: Situated between the U. Natato-rium and the Huntsman Center, theBurbidge Center is central to Utah’sclassrooms and athletic venues.

The full-service academic facility,utilized by all 19 varsity Utah athleticteams, was underwritten by a generous$2 million gift from the Kenneth P.Burbidge Jr. family. The center consoli-dated Utah’s athletic-academic efforts,both in terms of computer labs and studyspace, and academic counseling. Theupper level also provides a socialgathering place for the student-athletes.

There’s a new style of living at theUniversity of Utah, which became a trueresidential campus in the fall of 2000when students moved into the beautifulnew Heritage Commons. The living-learning community is the heart ofcampus activity and exudes a vibrant,energetic “college town” atmosphere.

Situated in historic Fort Douglas atthe mouth of Red Butte Canyon, andlocated on 70 acres of land, the expan-sive 912,000 square foot residentialcomplex boasts incredible views of SaltLake City and the surrounding mountainranges.

Heritage Commonsreceived worldwide acclaimlast winter when it servedas the Athletes Villageduring the XIX OlympicWinter and ParalympicGames, hosted by Salt LakeCity. Some 3,500 athletesand officials called HeritageCommons home during thattime. After the Games,Heritage Commons revertedto its intended role as astudent residential center.

Heritage Commonsconsists of 21 buildings–20 residentialand one for dining and support services.Eight of the buildings are apartmentstyle, with 235 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. The residence hallsare spread out over 12 buildings andhave a total of 1,515 beds. A maximum offour students share a bathroom and eachbedroom has independent heating andair conditioning units.

First-year students live in GatewayHeights, a hall with furnished, doublesemi-suites, an advanced telecommunica-tions system (voice, video and data), anethernet connection to the U. studentcomputer system, cable TV connections,a large community lounge, study roomsand indoor bike storage. Each floor has akitchenette.

Chapel Glen is home to both firstyear students and upperclassmen andoffers the same amenities as Gateway

convenience store, computer and technol-ogy labs, fitness and game rooms, fourmultipurpose rooms, a mail center andmore.

Alongside the residence halls andapartments is a University Bookstorebranch, University Copy Center and theUniversity Guest House (an on-campushotel).

Transportation is another benefit ofHeritage Commons. A valid U of Uparking permit allows residents to parkclose to their hall. Free shuttles run fiveroutes every 10 minutes and the UtahTransit Authority and light rail (TRAX)combine to traverse 21 routes to and fromcampus. The residence halls are alsoeasily accessible to main campus by footand are connected via the state-of-the-artGeorge S. Eccles 2002 Legacy Bridge.
