The Biblical Archaeology Society (BAS) was founded by Hershel Shanksin 1974 as a nonprofit, nondenominational educational organization.

Our mission is to disseminate information about archaeology in Biblelands. Since then, BAS has educated the general public on the latestarchaeological discoveries from the Biblical world and the ancient NearEast through magazines, books and a variety of multimedia products(books, CD-ROMs and DVDs) that are suitable for individual and classroom use.

History buffs, professors, clergy and other people who are interested in the ancient world have found BAS materials valuable. Librarians have repeatedly selected our reference volumes for their collections. BAS titles have been chosen as required texts at major American universities such as Harvard, Brown and Johns Hopkins. The Society also organizes tours and seminars all over the world, arranging for prominent scholars to address our audiences.

About The Biblical Archaeology SocietyBAS is the only nondenominational organization dedicated to educating a broad audience about

Biblical archaeology. The public relies on BAS to present the latest that scholarship has to offer in a fair and accessible manner. The Biblical Archaeology Society serves as an important authority andan invaluable source of reliable information. BAS also undertakes timely special projects, such as its

partnership with the Smithsonian Institution that brought remarkableobjects from Israel to the United States for exhibit.

The society, its magazine and its founder and editor-in-chief, HershelShanks, were instrumental in the publication of the Dead Sea Scrolls. They have been the subject of widespread acclaim and media attention in publications as diverse as Time, People, Civilization, U.S. News and WorldReport, The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Jerusalem Post. They have also been featured on CNN, PBS and the Discovery Channel.

In each issue of Biblical Archaeology Review we strive to bring the fascinatingworld that connects archaeology with the Bible to our hundreds of thousands

of readers in language meant to be understood. BAR, as we are universallyknown, must also be beautiful, so we festoon our pages with breathtaking color pictures.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who writes for Biblical Archaeology Review? The world’s most renowned Biblical scholars and archaeologists. But we work

closely with them to produce articles that represent the finest, most enticing and understandable journalism.

Is it all serious? No, we believe learning should be fun, as well as mind-expanding. In each issue

of BAR, we have a Biblical archaeology cartoon contest, a cocked-eye look at theBible in the news, a column of breaking news in the Biblical and archaeologicalworlds (especially from the time of David and Solomon and the life of Jesus andthe Dead Sea Scrolls), a short trek with travelers in the Holy Land hundreds andsometimes thousands of years ago (we call it “Past Perfect”), and a one-page lookat what’s especially beautiful beyond the Biblical world in places like Timbuktuand China.

Does BAR have a particular theological orientation? No, BAR is non-sectarian. BAR appeals to people of all religions and of no

religion. Our readers—and writers—include Christians and Jews, people of deep faith and people who are skeptics, Catholics and Protestants, evangelicalsand mainliners, and sprinklings of people who are of many other religious orientations. The most important thing is to be respectful of differences.

The aim of Biblical Archaeology Review is tomake available in understandable language thelatest insights of professional archaeologists asthey relate to the Bible.

Our readers vary. A few are professionalarchaeologists themselves. Far more are readersfascinated by the Bible or by ancient history, with almost no background in archaeology.

Our readers differ in other ways. Not only arethey of different religions (or of no religion),they also have different kinds of commitmentsto the Bible. For some, the Bible is the sacredword of God against which all truth is to bemeasured. For others, the Bible is the literaryremains of an ancient civilization that may bedissected and analyzed just like any otherancient literary document. All readers can findsomething of interest in each issue.

We also have a commitment to be interesting. That means we focus primarily on the new, theunusual and the controversial. And there ismuch in archaeology that is all three.

And we have a commitment to independence. We call the shots as we see them.

Finally, we have a commitment to openness.

I hope all these qualities will be apparent toyou as you read through an issue. You'll find thatthe intellectual ferment in our pages is matchedby the strong commitment by our readers to con-stantly learn more about this fascinating subject. We're confident that your advertisement in BARwill reach a highly responsive audience.
