Yannn Bar Zb was an East-Syriac author of the late 12 thearly 13thc.His Explanation of the Mysteriesis a metrical commentary on the liturgy. It ispreceeded by a prologue narrating the biblical history from the beginning ofcreation to the redemptive mission of Christ, and followed by a doctrinal partas well as a conclusion that describes symbolism of the church. Hitherto un-published, the poem is presented in a critical edition which is based on ninemanuscripts, including the oldest known one.
