Page 2: Barton hall & The Pavilions

These charming buildings were built in 1885 to form a new Union Workhouse, replacing one on Shaftesbury Street that had been destroyed by fire.

Built on a 4½ acre site called Barton Fields, on Bartons Road, these buildings were designed by Fred Bath of Salisbury, in a simple Queen Anne style.

In 1948 they became part of the new National Health Service as Fordingbridge Infirmary.

Adjacent to these buildings is Fordingbridge Surgery, originally built as the classrooms for the workhouse children.

Fordingbridge is a small country town on the banks of the River Avon, in the New Forest. It was recorded in the Doomsday Book and the name has evolved through the years from ̀ Forde’ and ̀ Bridge’. The first Great Bridge, built in medieval times, is upstream from the ford and, with its seven graceful arches, is a major feature of the town. A perfect view of the bridge is afforded from The George, an 18th century pub serving locally sourced food and situated on the river bank.

The town has superb local facilities. As well as an array of local shops, there are banks, reputable primary and secondary schools, a library and an excellent health centre.

A few yards from the High Street is the parish church of St. Mary. Largely built in 1150 it has some typical Norman characteristics.

The Fordingbridge Museum, which houses local history exhibits, and a Visitor Information Centre are located in King’s Yard. Day permits to fish at Riverside Park are available from the Visitor Information Centre.

There is an attractive children’s playground and park, secluded memorial gardens and sports playing fields. The town’s large riverside park provides access to the River Avon and a walk along a riverbank draped with willows and waterside plants. With plenty of Forest walks nearby, the outdoor enthusiast is well catered for and a network of footpaths provides local walking, riding and cycling opportunities.

Traditional methods are used to stand the test of time...

The iron gates at the entrance to the original workhouse stood between the brick pillars on the Pavilions, with iron railings around the perimeter of the grounds.

At some point in the building’s history all of the iron work was removed and now replacements are being commissioned. As conservation and quality are a top priority, the design of both gates and railings is based on the original architect’s drawings of 1883 and will be made from galvanised steel.

Local craftsmen have been appointed, ensuring a feature that is not only true to its origins but will stand the test of time.
