Dwarf Minke Whale

The Dwarf minke whales are a baleen whales that eats krill and straining tiny plankton which they visit the reef each year in June and July.

Dugongs are mammals that can grows to about three meters and can weight 400 kg. It lives to about 70 years old and it has a single calf when they are 6 to 7 years old

White breasted sea eagles are birds that lives on the coast and islands and migrates from the Great Barrier Reef as far as Japan. This bird snatches the fish from the water’s surface to get food.

Coral Trout

Coral Trout is a protogynous hermaphrodites. It starts as a female and while it gets old it turns to a male. It lives until about 16. It is a voracious eating predators. The most common type of fish eaten is Damselfish and Spiny Chromis Damselfish. It eats only during daylight hours and most often at dawn. It changes it’s color when eating.

Sea Turtles

Loggerhead turtle Green turtles

Six of the seven species of the sea turtles in the world are found on the Great Barrier Reef. There are Green, Leatherback, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Flatback and Olive Ridley. It lays it’s eggs in the sand. It can lay eggs to 100 at a time and it returns back to the place they hatched to lay their own. If the sand is cool it produces male turtles and if the sand is warmer it produces female turtles. The largest turtles are Leatherback, the heaviest one weighted 916 kg.

Large Red Bass is not usually eaten because of the causing ciguatera poisoning. It lives over 50 years. It grow s slowly up to 70 to 80 cm.

Giant clams grows more than 1m. It is simultaneous hermaphrodites, the same animal is the female and the male at the same time. The largest pearl is also found in the Giant clam and it was sold for $10 million to New York.

Nudibranch is a type of a snail. It only has it’s shell when they are a tiny larvae. Adult Nudibranch has a multi-colored mantle not shell. It has a bight colors to warn the predators to stay away

Anemone fish able to change sex during the lifetime. It is the most popular fish in the Great Barrier Reef. It grows up to 9cm and weights up to 27.50g usually. The interesting part is that the male takes care of the nest and the eggs until it hatches.

Blue tang is very active and it loves to swim. It is peaceful and calm. The Blue tang is also known as the Palette Surgeonfish, Pacific Blue Tang, Hepatus and Regal Tang.

Olive Sea Snakes

Olive sea snakes has a paddle like tail and the venom is quite toxic. It’s average length is 1.2 meters, but it can grow up to 2 meters. It’s fangs are 7mm long. Young ones are in dark color.

Parrot Fish Parrot Fish has many colors mostly bright ones. There is seven different Parrotfish. It is very active during the day and it rest at night. It has teeth too. It grows 7 to 24 inches in length.

Maori Wrasse

Maori Wrasse full name is Hump Headed Maori Wrasse. It grows over 6 feet and weights 180kgs for male and it grows to 3 feet for females. The females live up to about 30 years of age, but the males lives up to about 25 years of age. Now in the Great Barrier Reef this fish is protected.

Gray Reef Sharks The Gray reef sharks can grow up to 2.55 meters maximum, most are 1.5 meters. The maximum age it can live is up to 25. It gives birth every 2 years. The birth size is 45 to 60 cm. It swims fast. It is active during day, but it is more active at night. This shark is very curious about the scuba divers, especially when they dive.

Stingray

This is how big it is when you compare with a person.

Stingray lives 15 years to 25 years if they live in the wilds. It grows up to 6.5 feet (2 meters) and it weights up to 350kg. It swims close to the divers and snorkelers without fear.
