BARR'S HILL SCHOOL HOLDS 2ND PLACE IN NATIONAL ART COMPETITION

Over a space of 2 days, 8 Art Academy students from year 8 and year 10 created a mural for Willmott Dixon Construction at the old Coventry Fire Station on Radford Road. The art piece was entered into the Ivor Goodsite Hoarding Competition 2018 where Barr's Hill School came 2nd place in the whole of the country! This is a proud moment for both staff and students who participated in the competition.

The 10m x 3m hoarding board, designed by Ellie O’Brien and Alex Cleall, represents the phoenix rising from the ashes. Showcasing a city skyline showing the three spires, university buildings and whittle arches. As well as places of religion, the mural celebrates Coventry as a city, the fire service and the construction industry.

The mural can be seen on the side of the new construction of the fire station on Radford Road close to the ring road roundabout and students will receive a gift pack from Willmott Dixon Construction for their contribution and an awards ceremony will take place in the next couple of weeks.

Art Academy is part of our successful enrichment programme where students can take part in competitive sports and activities both inside and outside of school. The programme promotes the life-skills needed for everyday life, develop “soft skills” that employers and universities look for, while also giving students the opportunity to find out more about their interests and passions.

Not only can an enrichment programme look great on a CV when students apply for higher education, jobs or training schemes, the transferable skills learnt throughout the programme are significant. The programme can boost self-confidence, develop leadership skills, instil self-motivation and can evidence good time- management. Away from the pressure of passing exams, enrichment extends students’ education and personal growth. It is all evidence of how a student has a wide array of skills and achievements beyond their subject grades. Find out more about our enrichment programme by following the link below:

A special thanks to our outstanding Teacher of Art, Mrs Stafford for her fantastic work and guidance. As well as Mr Sharratt, Mr Sohal, Manpreet Chana, Maria Wilkes and Jamie Jones from Willmott Construction.

On Friday 22nd June, ten year 8 girls spent the day at CU Coventry learning about Engineering as a career path. They listened to two inspirational women engineers outline their career journeys, went on a tour of the campus, and then spent the afternoon engaged in an engineering challenge, where they were given a bag of materials and had to design and construct a self-supporting roller coaster. Our team did brilliantly and were just ‘pipped at the post’ by another school for winning the challenge, but it was great to see how engaged and motivated the students were; they represented Barr’s Hill brilliantly. The students involved were: Saran Athwal, Jessica Cervi, Bethany Davies, Paige Hamber (who was singled out for a prize for her efforts), Alina Hussain, Natalia Jablonska, Issey McCusker, Savanha Rowley, Kelly Henry and Georgia Healey.
