Barrack Heights Public School Term 3 Week 6
PRINCIPAL'S REPORT
This week is SASS (School Administrative and Support Staff) Recognition Week and I would like to take
this opportunity to say a big thank you to all our wonderful Office ladies, our Student Learning Support
Officers and Greg, our General Assistant. The way that our students, classroom teachers and school are
supported by our SASS is second to none and we couldn't be the wonderful school we are without them.
If you get a chance this week, please show your appreciation. They work tirelessly behind the scenes and
you may not always see everything they do, but they are the ones who are at the heart of our school. On behalf of all the staff, students and our Community, thank you for always going above and beyond!
Southern Stars - What an epic week our Southern Starts team had last week! A huge thank you to Miss
Broomham and Miss Ugrinovska for their unwavering dedication to this experience and making sure it
was possible. Our team of dancers had an incredible time performing in a number of shows on Friday
and Saturday, something they will never forget. A big thank you to our parents and carers who helped
with transport and for supporting the girls over all the weeks leading up to Show Week. We have a
number of photos on our Facebook and Instagram pages, head over for a look.
Kindergarten Expo - Tomorrow night (Tuesday) we are hosting our very first Kindergarten Expo night for
our 2020 intake. All parents and carers are welcome, even if you already have a child here at Barrack
Heights. Starting Kindergarten on the right foot is an essential step in a child's educational journey and
we want to be there with you every step of the way. This expo night will show you all the wonderful
things we have on offer here at BHPS and how we can work with you to get those first steps sorted.
Please note, this is an information session for parents and carers, however if you need to bring your
child, you may do so. It begins at 5:30pm.
Book Week - A reminder that we are hosting our Book Parade this coming Wednesday August 28, at
9:15am. Following the parade, loved ones are welcome to head to our school library to look at our Book
Fair which will be on display. The P&C will also be hosting a Hot Dog lunch on the day, please make sure
you order before hand as there will be very limited hot dogs left over. We are looking forward to seeing you there.
Warm regards,
Skye Seymour
Principal
SOUTHERN STARS
Take a look at some of the snaps from Southern Stars! You can tell how much fun the
girls had by those huge smiles on their faces.
SASS RECOGNITION WEEK
Thank you to our SASS Team. We couldn't be the school we are without you! Thank you
for always going above and beyond for our students, teachers, families and our
Community.
THANK YOU SASS!
YOU CAN DO IT!
Lesson 27 - Getting up when you are feeling down
This week students will recognise emotions and compare their emotional responses to those of peers.
Students will understand themselves as learners, discuss their strengths and weaknesses as learners as
well as identify some learning strategies to assist them. Students will develop reflective practice and
learn how to express their emotions appropriately.
Learning Intentions
1. Students will learn about the blocker ‘feeling down’.
2. Students will identify strengths and weaknesses in the areas of physical, social and intellectual development.
3. Students will learn not to base their worth on a single aspect of their performance.
PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE
For over 16 years, the Premier's Reading Challenge has been supporting students in NSW to develop a
love of reading for pleasure and leisure and providing them with opportunities to experience quality
literature. In 2018, over 302,000 students successfully completed the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge
- more than in any other year. This year, Mrs Holloway invites all students of Barrack Heights Public
School to take part in the challenge so we can make 2019 the best year yet!
The challenge opened Monday the 4th of March 2019 and closes on Friday the 30th of August 2019.
The PRC student site is available again this year! Students can search for books to read, add books to
their reading logs, and track their progress throughout the challenge. You can find the site at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/studentExperience.html#/
Happy reading!
From the Library...
Book Week is being celebrated this week! The theme for Book Week is "Reading is my SUPERPOWER!".
During Book Week, we will be holding a parade - WEDNESDAY AUGUST 28 at 9.15am. Students can
come dressed as their favourite character from a book. We strongly encourage students to come as
book characters, not just in dress up clothes as we want to promote the love of reading and trave lling to new worlds through the engagement of stories and books.
In the week 6, we will also be having a Book Fair where a huge selection of books and items will be
available to purchase from the school Library. The Book Fair will run from Thursday August 29 to Thursday September 5.
BREAKFAST CLUB
Don't forget we have Breakfast Club on every morning! Starting the day on a full stomach has been
proven to make a significant difference in a student's capacity to engage in learning.
A big Thank you to our staff at BHPS that volunteer for the Breakfast Club to make fresh fruit and toast every morning for our students to kick start a wonderful day of learning!!
SCHOOL TRAVEL
KINDERGARTEN 2020
Please let everyone know that we will be holding a Kindergarten Expo night. If you or someone you
know has a child starting Kindergarten in 2020, this night is for you! Please come along and hear what
will be happening next year. There are a few exciting changes coming for 2020 and we will have a
number of different stalls set up to provide you with more information on our school partners and what happens in our classrooms.
We know it seems a long way off but we do need to collect enrolment information now. If your child is
starting school in 2020, would you please contact the school office staff to collect an enrolment form
and register your child's details. Don't forget to share this information with family and friends.
Barrack Heights Public School is an incredible place to learn and grow so spread the love and let our local community members know we are now taking enrolments for next year! Thank you in advance!
