regional destination

The stunning Pemberton region in southern Western Australia is known for its forests of towering Karri pine trees and clean and green scenery.

Around 85 per cent of the region is under natural vegetation. Since the first grape varieties were planted in 1977, as recommended by John Gladstones who saw its potential, the region has also steadily earned a reputation for its premium quality wines. Pemberton has a cool maritime climate, influenced by its proximity to the Great Southern and Indian Oceans. The majority of vineyards in Pemberton are at an

elevation of between 100m to 300m above sea level which sets it apart from other West Australian viticultural areas and provides unique grape-growing conditions.

Pemberton enjoys similar weather conditions to the Burgundy region in France, world-renowned for its ability to produce fine chardonnay and pinot noir, and that is reflected in the quality of Pemberton wines, especially chardonnay – the most widely planted grape in the region and capable of delivering generous full flavours. Scared Pemberton doesn’t offer a varied choice of varietals? Not to worry, pinot noir is also being experimented with and merlot has consistently proven its suitability to Pemberton. Also, sauvignon blanc and cabernet sauvignon have pride and place with the winemakers of Pemberton and have thrived in Western Australia’s coolest wine region. As for what concerns quality, you can be reassured by the fact that

most of the wineries here are family-owned with a commitment to quality and excellence. Producers such as Fonty’s Pool, Piccardy, Salitage, Silkwood Wines and Bellarmine Wines have all enjoyed a strong following of their wine styles.

And what is the reward for visitors to Pemberton? Well, magnificent scenery and a crazy number of nature-inspired activities including scenic walks, canoeing, fishing and beautiful wildflowers in Gloucester National Park. A thriving arts and crafts community and handmade specialties are also on offer for visitors, with various boutiques and galleries showcasing local wares. And of course, it wouldn’t be a true wine and tourist region without some delicious local produce to devour – with marron and trout being the local (mouthwatering) heroes. Ask your local Liquor Barons store about their range of Pemberton wines in stock this winter!

winemaker profile

The wines of Yalumba are synonymous with quality. Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family-owned winery, established in 1849 by Samuel Smith – an English brewer. When it comes to what’s in the bottle, it’s no surprise then that with five generations of family heritage to preserve, the wines continue to deliver to their loyal customers, at every price point. From the popular Y series to the Handpicked series, there is something for everyone within the Yalumba range, whether you’re a novice or seasoned wine lover. All made under the watchful eye and skillful hands of chief winemaker Louisa Rose, and a team of talented senior winemakers, Yalumba wines reflect the pioneering spirit of the Yalumba family. The group continue to experiment with new grape varietals, grape-growing techniques, biodynamic practices in the vineyard – as well as pay homage to its past in protecting precious viticultural assets through the development of the ‘Old Vine Charter’. And more importantly, with no shareholders to answer to, the focus for Yalumba, really is on the wine.

Today, the winery is still owned by the family, headed up by fifth-generation family member, Robert-Hill Smith, under whom the winery has grown from strength to strength. Robert became the managing director of Yalumba in 1985 and during his time at the helm, Yalumba has cemented itself as one of the country’s most progressive and consistent producers of quality Australian wines. In particular, Robert has taken the company’s environmental commitments to an admirable level, winning numerous worldwide accolades for its dedication to the preservation of the environment, and its implementation of its ‘Commitment to Sustainable Winemaking Programme’. The company proudly affiliates with suppliers who also make serious efforts to reduce their carbon footprint, preferentially working with companies who are of a like-minded philosophy.

Each of the premium Yalumba releases tell their own story and are a piece of ongoing history. The well-known Signature Series first began in 1962 and it brings together

the best of what the vintage has to offer, as well as pay homage to the people of Yalumba who have contributed significantly to the company over the years. As such, each Signature Series wine, which is a cabernet and shiraz blend of Barossa fruit, is released with a different ‘signatory’. The first release in 1962 was named in honour of Samuel Smith. The current release of The Signature, the 2006 vintage, is named after long-serving staff members Ralph Dunning and Kevin Renshaw and its hand-picked fruit and careful attention to detail by winemaker Kevin Glastonbury has ensured a wine with powerful tannins, ripe fruit and considerable ageing potential of 10 years or more. Another iconic wine introduced into the Yalumba stable in 1987 is ‘The Menzies’ – named after former Australian Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies who was a red wine afficianado. The Menzies wines are crafted from cabernet sauvignon grapes from the company’s Coonawarra vineyards – a region famed for its unique red soil and world-renowned ability to produce classic cabernet sauvignon.

Australia’s oldest familyowned winery

Page 9: Barons_BYO_Winter_2011_Sml

Liquor Barons Winter Catalogue 9

The current release of The Menzies is the 2007, with chocolate and dark berry flavours and soft, silky tannins from two years ageing in French oak. Further growing its iconic wine status in 1990, Yalumba introduced The Octavius in 1990 from parcels of Barossa Valley fruit, aged in American and French oak ‘octave’ barrels with the capacity to hold just 100 litres – the only red wine in the world believed to be aged in such small capacity barrels. With Yalumba having their own cooperage (barrel making facility) on site, the barrels can be seasoned some three to five years before they come in contact with the wine, ensuring the oak does not overpower or dominate the premium wine. Only a select handful of wineries around the world can lay claim to having their own cooperage, but Yalumba is proud to do so and continue on the age-old craft of barrel making. The current Octavius release is the Barossa Old Vine Shiraz 2006 aged in all American 100 litre oak barrels. Yalumba The Reserve wines is made only in outstanding vintages and is made of a blend of the finest 20 red wine barrels from Yalumba’s cellars. The current release is the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz with opulent mocha flavours.

Catering to all price points and always offering great quality, Yalumba Wines represent those exemplary and iconic Australian wine styles wine lovers just love.

Cleanskinif you dare

Clea

nski

ns The word ‘cleanskin’ is enough to conjure up an image of all the dollars that you – the customer – are going to save. People are often more interested in the word ‘cleanskin’ rather than the word ‘quality’ – you might get lucky though.

Maybe you’re not looking for a special bottle to proudly present at a dinner party and for the guests to say: “Wow, I love that wine”, but more likely it’s about value for money; or at least the perception of it. But, do cleanskins always give you what you want?

Borne out of oversupply and falling prices, cleanskins are the wineries’ reaction to the situation: “The tanks are full, where are we going to put the next vintage?” The boss then realises that sales of their branded wine are slow. It is like a country: printing more and more money just devalues the currency. Similarly with wine, oversupply results in wineries offering discounts that eventually devalue their brand. So the boss makes a decision. Make the next vintage and sell it off as cleanskins, or just sell off the wine already in the tank as cleanskins. It might be a great wine that has seen some winemaking love, but the most important word in that sentence is ‘might’.

So does the customer always get what they want? The answer – more often than not – is no. Cleanskins do not have to offer quality; there is no damage to a brand if the wine is not good. However, how do you feel when you drink a below average wine? Saving $3 is not always a good decision to make. The information you have to go on is minimal. You might get a region and a tasting note, if you’re lucky, ‘Barossa Shiraz from an unnamed award winning winery’, or ‘crisp dry Margaret River white blend’. Is it any good? Who knows, it is potluck. So what should you do? As an wine writer I always tell people the same thing; “Find a good wine store and find the wine fanatic in that store; the person fiddling with the bottles on the shop floor, reading the back labels and raving on about the wine they had last night”. Ask them what they would drink; they are unlikely to say ‘cleanskins’.

spirits

Impress your significant other, neighbours and friends with a properly mixed Martini, a sumptuous Honey Liqueur cocktail or a rejuvenating Bloody Mary to get the day going in precisely the right direction.

These drinks are easy to make, but equally easy to get wrong, so here are a few simple tips to help you become the next budding mixologist.

The first step is preparation. Set up the glasses and line up your bottles – it’s easy to get lost and skip ingredients (or worse, add some unwanted ones). Have access to plenty of ice; big chucky cubes or crushed ice – depending on the drink - nearly all cocktails require cooling at some stage of the process.

Go the extra mile and don’t forget the garnish; you’ve made the effort to mix a beautiful cocktail, the garnish will make it that much more memorable.

Finally, know what you’re drinking and how much alcohol it contains; measure everything.

Bloody MaryGlass:Tumbler / RocksGarnish: Celery stickMethod: Add Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, soy, wine,

salt and pepper. Add vodka, and then pour in tomato juice. Stir or tip from glass to glass – do not shake. Pour over ice. Squeeze lemon into finished drink and add a touch of pepper to finish off. Stir with a stick of celery.

leaving it in the freezer). Add vodka and martini dry together, put as much ice as possible into the glass and stir 22 times. Strain into martini glass. Gin is a popular base spirit for many classic mixed drinks, including the martini. Secretly produced “bathtub gin” was commonly available in the speakeasies and “blind pigs” of Prohibition-era America due to the relative simplicity of the production method. Gin remained popular as the basis of many cocktails after the repeal of Prohibition.
