Learning to lead is every bit as complex as learning to become a mature productive adult all over again.

We learn to lead by reading (studies and stories of leaders)

We learn to lead by leading (experiential learning that pushes us)

We learn to lead by heeding (ourselves in reflective journaling and one another in reflective conversation)

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night [Greek = knowledge and understanding], so that you may be careful to do [Hebrew = implementation] according to all that is written in it. Joshua 1:8a

If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. John 13:17

The nature of

leadership

in our day

Page 16: Barnabas g1 1 12-15 (1)-2
Page 17: Barnabas g1 1 12-15 (1)-2

Once upon a time we simply obeyed orders issued by our superiors, our leaders, our managers. Now we incline more to challenge them, emboldened to do so by the spread of democracy, by the rhetoric of empowerment, and by the practice of participation. The evidence of the decline in respect for authority is everywhere—and everywhere are leaders who labor to lead. The change is cultural, contextual. Norms are now such that followers demand more… and leaders succumb more often.

Barbara Kellerman

Page 18: Barnabas g1 1 12-15 (1)-2

Becoming a leader has become a mantra. The leadership industry has exploded in the last thirty or forty years---in part the result of the following trends: first the historical trajectory to weakened leaders, strengthened followers, and more complicated contexts; second, an acceleration of this shift.

Barbara Kellerman

For us the invitation is, “Learn to lead like Jesus!”

I wonder if sometime around 50 years

ago a great mental tide began to sweep

across the world. Before the tide,

people saw themselves in certain fixed

places in the social order. They

accepted opinions from trusted

authorities. As the tide swept through,

they began to see themselves

differently…

Page 21: Barnabas g1 1 12-15 (1)-2

They felt they should express their

own views, and these views deserve

respect. They mentally bumped

themselves up to first class and had

a different set of expectations of how

they should be treated.

Leadership can happen anywhere at any time.

Leadership is not about personality; its about behavior.

Try, fail, learn. Try, fail, learn. Try, fail, learn. That is the leader’s mantra.

The Leadership Challenge - Kouzes and Posner

Page 25: Barnabas g1 1 12-15 (1)-2

Leadership is not a gene and it’s not an inheritance. Leadership is an identifiable set of skills and abilities that are available to all of us. The “great person” – woman or man – theory of leadership is just plain wrong.

The Circle of

the Leader

Leadership begins with the leader: who and what you are. For who you are, the kind of person you are, the character you have, has a great deal to do with who will follow you and where they will follow you and how far they will follow you.

Grow as a disciple of Jesus

A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. Jesus Christ Luke 6:40
