John is the Strategic Director for Growth and Homes at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, charged with facilitating and enabling the creation 50,000 homes and 20,000 jobs in the borough over the next twenty years, and setting up the Council’s Regeneration and Investment Company: Be First. Prior to joining Barking and Dagenham in 2016, he worked for the London Borough of Newham for 6 years, where latterly he was the Director of Housing and Community Infrastructure. He has also been the Director of Planning and Development at the London Boroughs of Southwark, Richmond-upon Thames and Brent, as well as heading up Savills Central London Planning Team for several years in the 2000s.@lbbdcouncil
Matthew Carpen
Project Director, Barking Riverside Ltd.
Matt has overall responsibility for the design and delivery of the Regeneration site Barking Riverside, a joint venture between L&Q and the Mayor of London, which is one of the largest development sites in the UK. Prior to this Matt worked at the GLA for ten years under both former London Mayor Ken Livingston and Boris Johnson, first as part of the Planning team and later in the Housing and Land team where he was instrumental in bringing forward the Barking Riverside railway extension finance package. @barkingriver
Mark Davy Founder & Director, Futurecity
Mark founded Futurecity in 2007 as one of the first cultural placemaking consultancies to operate in the urban realm. As a platform for private and public sector investment in the cultural life of our cities, Futurecity has a global understanding of urban development, with offices in London, Cambridge and Sydney. Under Mark’s leadership, Futurecity has written over 200 arts and culture strategies for large brownfield developments, regeneration areas and urban projects across the UK and internationally. @futurecityblog
Verity-Jane Keefe
Artist
Verity-Jane is a visual artist, working predominantly within the public realm, using moving image, text and installation based work to explore the complex relationships between people and place. She is interested in the role and potential of the artist within urban regeneration. She has made work about and for Barking and Dagenham for over a decade. Recent works include The Mobile Museum, The Barking & Dagenham Creative Map, a residency in Thamesmead for Peabody and LEGOLAND. @veritykeefe

Alex Lifschutz Director, Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands
Following a degree in sociology and psychology at Bristol University and research in cognitive psychology, Alex studied at the Architectural Association in London. He joined Foster Associates in 1977 and worked on the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank from 1981 to 1985. In 1986 (with the late Ian Davidson) he formed Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands. Alex’s interest lies in the ability of design to create buildings and cities that respond to change and that are easily adapted those who use them and is past president of the Architectural Association. @lds_architects
Louise Mansfield Director, Allies & Morrison
Louise joined Allies and Morrison Urban Practitioners in 2011. She manages masterplan, urban design and strategic planning projects at a range of scales on behalf of the public, private and third sector clients. She recently completed a masterplan SPD for Old Town in Croydon and is currently working on the design for a new public square at North Acton Station and public engagement for the Stratford Waterfront cultural and education quarter at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Louise has recently worked with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham to prepare a townscape and socio-economic characterisation study of the borough. @alliesmorrison
Peter Murray
Chairman, New London Architecture
Peter serves as the Chairman of NLA. Trained as an architect, he was an editor of Building Design and RIBA Journal before starting Blueprint in 1983. He has curated a number of major architectural exhibitions and is Chairman of the communications consultancy Wordsearch. He is founder of both NLA and the London Festival of Architecture and is author of various architectural books including “The saga of Sydney Opera House” and “A passion to build”. He is a visiting professor of IE University in Madrid and Hon. Sec. of the Bedford Park Society and was recently installed as the Master Architect of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects. @PGSMurray
Carole Pluckrose Artistic Director, The Boathouse CIC
Carole is a theatre director, space maker and coach. She began her career as an actor working internationally. In 2014 she joined forces with Rooff Ltd to found the Boathouse. Her ambition was to create an exciting new arts venue at the heart of Barking with an emphasis on community engagement in excellent arts experiences, championing and mentoring emerging artists and developing her own theatre practice. Carole lives and works in Barking. @boathousecic

David West Founding Director, Studio Egret West
David is a partner in Studio Egret West, and an urban designer specialising in urban visions and strategic frameworks. Since graduating from TU Delft, Holland, David has worked on diverse projects all over the world. At Atkins, he worked on large-scale masterplans in China, Portugal, Abu Dhabi, and Brazil. At Alsop, he established and led the ‘Big Architecture’ team, formulating radical urban strategies that challenged conventional thinking about places. Having set up SEW with Christophe Egret in 2004, David has pursued a passion for delivering place specific strategies and solutions. @Egretwest
Dr Fiona Wright
Consultant in Public Health, LB Barking and Dagenham and the GLA, Co lead of London’s Healthy New Town in Barking Riverside.
Fiona has been a Consultant in Public Health Medicine since 2000. Her current role is a partnership between Barking and Dagenham Council and the Greater London Authority, focussed on getting health into the growth and regeneration agenda in Barking and Dagenham and supporting London’s Health Inequalities strategy. Fiona is co-chair of the London Healthy High Streets group and wellbeing editor of the London Journal of Primary Care. Past experience includes independent consultancy for the Institute of Health Equity and a number of public health consultant roles in NHS and local government. @CareCityUK @lbbdcouncil @barkingriver
Cllr Darren Rodwell Leader of the Council, LB Barking & Dagenham
Darren has always lived in the borough and is a passionate community champion. He was first elected to the council in 2010 and became Leader in 2014. Since then he has set the vision and direction of the council with the vision ‘One Borough; One Community; London’s growth opportunity’. He was also responsible for the series of successful festivals which marked the borough’s 50th anniversary in 2015 including a visit by Her Majesty the Queen. Darren is also Executive member for City Development for London Councils. @lbbdcouncil
Chris Porter
Transport Planning Manager, Transport for London
Chris is a Transport Planning Manager in TfL Planning. He is currently leading on a number of road and rail projects including, the proposed London Overground extension to Barking Riverside, which was subject to Public Inquiry in October 2016 and the proposed A13 Riverside Tunnel. Prior to this, he led the project team responsible for delivering the Transport & Works Act (TWAO) application for the Northern line extension to Battersea. He has also worked on development and transport projects across London including at Croydon, Earls Court and Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea. @TfL

Chairman, Levitt Bernstein
Having worked on a broad range of projects, from housing estate regenerations to arts venue refurbishments, Gary has a wealth of experience in designing and delivering buildings which add real value to their local communities. He is currently leading Levitt Bernstein’s work on the Gascoigne Estate in LB Barking & Dagenham, where we are transforming the run down estate into a more welcoming and well-designed neighbourhood. @levittbernstein

Join us at our charity games night in the NLA Galleries raising money for LandAid. The Galleries will be transformed into a gaming heaven with everything from nostalgic games such as Kerplunk, Hungry Hippo’s and Jenga to a competitive arena with ping pong, virtual tennis and various other challenges. Prizes will be awarded for the leaders of each arena game and there will also be a raffle on the night.

New London Architecture is inviting submissions of international projects, masterplans and strategies, delivered by London-based teams around the world, as part of London Design Capital, a major NLA Insight Study, publication and exhibition uncovering the global reach of London’s built environment industries.
From masterplans to individual projects, either built or in design, the Study will celebrate the capital’s exceptional design, engineering, urban planning and consultancy skills around the world; highlight the new skills and technologies being developed for global markets; and examine the future for London’s creative economy in a post-Brexit world.
