We’ve partnered with husband and wife team Matthew and Helen Streets to run our luxurious in-store café, Stanley’s Coffee House & Kitchen.

The daytime menu changes daily but customers can expect scrumptious meals including honey roast ham open sandwiches, goats cheese and sun touched tomato paninis or the soon-to-be introduced afternoon tea.

Helen says: “Our focus is on creating simple, tasty food, using high quality local suppliers. With our new licence customers will be able to enjoy a selection of prosecco, wine and beer while enjoying lunch or afternoon tea.”

At its peak production level, Somnus operated six factories and employed 600 people. In the same decade the business provided mattresses for the Royal Yacht Britannia.

In 2000 Somnus became part of the Harrison Spinks business – the renowned bed maker which had grown from The Bedding House of Rhodes in 1840. Current chairman Peter Spinks masterminded the deal and in 2007 Somnus received a refreshed brand – putting it at the front of the luxury bed market.

More than 175 years ago, William Rhodes founded The Bedding House of Rhodes in the heart of Yorkshire. It was the entrepreneurial green shoot that would grow into a business which is today at the forefront of innovation when it comes to beds.

Somnus, as it is now known, is a dominant brand in the bedding industry and is the only manufacturer with its own farm to supply some of the natural materials such as Yorkshire Dales Eco Wool, Hemptex and Flax.

When former RAF men and business partners Charles Barker and Alex Stonehouse opened the first Barker and Stonehouse store on Stockton’s Bishopton Lane in 1946, Somnus beds took pride of place.

“When Somnus first started working with Barker and Stonehouse the business had recently made its 20 millionth mattress,” says Jason Lowdon, Somnus’ sales and marketing director.

“We’re very proud of our family roots, and we see that in Barker and Stonehouse. Simon Spinks, our managing director, is very hands on with the business, as is James Barker at Barker and Stonehouse,” Jason adds.

Today Somnus employs 460 people and operates the Somnus Farm in the beautiful surroundings of Yorkshire’s Wharfe Valley, complete with its own sheep flocks. Driven by a desire to take care of the environment, the business grows its own materials and sources others locally, where it can.

The business has built a reputation for innovation and now leads the field with its spring technology. It’s all in the detail; Somnus’ unique Sensa Intelligent Pocket Spring System, with finer wire manufactured in house, leaves more room for a higher concentration of springs.

Now mattresses can include around 30,000 in total, providing less pressure points leading to a more restful sleep.

Jason explains: “Springs were first introduced to mattresses around the turn of the 19th century, and ever since we’ve been at the very forefront of design. At one stage people would have gone into a store and asked for ‘a Somnus’ as opposed to a mattress.

“But for us it’s also about always being at the cutting edge of fashion, and that’s where our partnership with Barker and Stonehouse is so important. We support each other in that respect, and both businesses have their eye on what the customer demands.”

All testing of Somnus products is carried out by the company’s in house laboratory team. Beds, mattresses and headboards are all put through their paces using specialist pressure applying machinery. But nothing quite compares to stealing a quick lie down on one of the showroom models.

Somnus’ reputation for ensuring a comfortable sleep has even spread beyond these shores, and exporting regularly takes place to customers in the likes of Germany and Holland.

Jason and the Somnus team were at this year’s IMM international interiors show in Cologne to showcase the brand.

He adds: “The ‘made in England’ credentials are very important to us, and there’s a big market out there of people who demand this label on their goods. It’s important at home too, and that’s another reason our relationship with Barker and Stonehouse is enduring.”
