BARGAINING SURVEY REPORT SPRING 2018 PAGE 1 Survey administration On February 9th of 2018, GSU sent out a bargaining priorities survey to assess the working conditions and priorities of graduate student employees at the University of Chicago. The survey closed on March 2nd. This survey was sent to any members of the bargaining unit who provided a non-institutional email address via a Google form. This included any GSU members and non- members. Every effort was made to provide the Google form to the broadest possible population of student employees. Student status was confirmed by netID, and the survey was sent via an individualized link to ensure one response per individual. All respondents gave informed consent prior to participation. The survey was administered via the Qualtrics platform. Privacy & security Responses were anonymized and stored securely; only the survey analysis team and select members of the bargaining committee had access to these anonymous individual responses. A link between the anonymized information and the identity of respondents was stored separately and could be accessed only by a subset of the survey analysis team. If the survey analysis team wished to quote any text response in a public report, they used this link to contact the individual for permission, as per the informed consent statement. Analysis methods Our survey analysis team analyzed the quantitative data using custom written scripts in Python and R. Free response questions were scored using standard methods for qualitative data: first, the scorer read through all responses and identified central recurring themes. Then, the scorer assessed each response for the presence of these themes. Free responses that represented especially prominent themes were identified for possible inclusion in the report, and the respondents contacted for permission.
