2009–2010 Season

N eil Simon’s first runaway Broadway hit, Barefoot in the Park, follows the lives of newlyweds Paul and Corie Bratter as they adjust to married life in a tiny

Greenwich Village apartment. Paul is a lawyer wound a little too tight, while Corie is a free spirit bubbling over with romantic notions. In typical Simon style, all manner of comic chaos ensues as the young couple’s marriage begins to collapse under the pressure of a five-flight walk up, a skylight that leaks snow, an eccentric neighbor who must climb through their apartment to get to his, and Corie’s misguided attempts to marry off her mother.

Director’s Notesby Richard R. Garvin

Paul and Corie have a problem…one is a man and one is a woman. Why is that a problem? I think

that is what Simon is trying to get at in Barefoot in the Park. The couple got married and then spent 6 days in bed. Now life begins for them as partners. How does a man who is rational, uptight, and was brought up to be-lieve that boys don’t cry and a woman who is emotion-ally adventurous, and a free spirit live together, not kill each other, and stay in love. I think we all live close to this problem. Some more than others because there will always be exceptions to the rule. Speaking from some-one who has dealt with this issue most of his adult life, I find myself always thinking back to what a wise old man once said to me. When asked how you figure out a woman, he quite simply said, “Enjoy the mystery.” I think this works for the woman asking about figuring out a man. So my wish for everyone is to listen to the wise old man. Thanks to everyone who worked on the show. Thanks to my wife for always believing in me. Thanks to Edie Nayer (you know why, my little one), and thanks to the cast for making directing fun again. Enjoy the show!

W elcome to Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park, the first of many smash hit comedies from this great playwright.

We haven't presented a Neil Simon show in quite a few years, and we bring this to you with great pleasure. Richard Garvin, one of our gifted directors and actors, has assembled a cast of actors and an evening that promises great fun. I would like to welcome two new staff members to the fold. In my absence, our Board of Directors did some much needed restructuring of the business side of our theatre. Patrick Rogers is our new Business Manager. Patrick comes to us after 43 years managing the Heinz plant in Tracy. He is great to work with, and he is certainly making my life easier. After almost five years of trying to do everything myself, it is great that the Board has made it possible for me to continue in the newly created position of Artistic Director. Charlie Kirby is our new Office Manager, and she joins us after running the Scene Shop at Delta College for 13 years. She has been volunteering for a long time, and now she is a valued part of our staff. I also want to thank Polly Kelly, who decided it was time to retire, for her many years of service, and especially helping me learn the ropes when I came on board in 2005. Season tickets are on sale, so don’t forget to join us for another wonderful Season. I want to thank everyone who helped to make our Shrimp Feed a big success: Lynn Parker, who chaired the event, Barbara Crocker, head of the auction, Judy Caruso Williamson, who was in charge of decorations, and especially the Abba cover band, “Waterloo”, who gave us great music for dancing.

Meet the CastDAVID BALDWINDelivery Man

“Thanks, Kerry, Tim and Elizabeth for supporting the old man.” David Baldwin began his relationship with SCT in the 2008 production of the Rodgers and Ham-merstein musical, Cin-

derella, and has received a Willie Technical Award for his work backstage. In Barefoot in the Park, he makes his first appearance as an actor onstage. A graduate of Chico State, Da-vid teaches at Galt Elementary School. His hobby outside the theatre is pottery.

ANDREA D. DASTECorie Bratter

A well-known stage pres-ence in recent SCT sup-port roles, Andie Daste has appeared in The Producers, Are You Be-ing Served, and Annie Get Your Gun, where she received the “SCT Willie

Award” for Best Supporting Actress in a Mu-sical. She now assumes one of the plum roles of a lifetime for a young comedic actress--the character of Corie Bratter in Neil Simon’s classic romantic comedy, Barefoot in the Park. Andie thanks her Mom for being her “rock,” and Ian, Sharee and Lee Pike for their support and the hope they have given her. She dedicates this “Barefoot” performance to her late father, Walt, who was always her inspiration, and extends a special thanks to Dr James Sepiol for his generosity to her family.

RENEE D. JURIANMrs. Banks“My Darling CJ, I love you! Simple things! And…to our brood of animals too…the four legged kind!”Renee Jurian starred in her first acting role at age 3, in a Sunday School Christmas play. Since that time, she has had a wide range of theat-rical experiences, both as a actor and a pro-duction assistant. Renee holds a Performing Arts degree from Vanguard University, and has appeared with the Tracy Performing Arts company as Mrs Van Daan in Diary of Anne Frank, as well as in a number of other shows. She began her career at SCT as wicked step-sister Portia in the 2008 holiday production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, then moved to the ensemble for The Produc-ers.

MIKE MOONVictor Velasco“I am so pleased to be asso-ciated with such a fine cast and classy organization!” Mike Moon is without doubt one of the best known male comedic tal-ents at SCT. Debuting in 2003, he has had numer-ous major roles in musical productions such as Sugar, South Pacific, Damn Yankees, and The Producers, as well as in clever British farces such as Caught in the Net and Are You Being Served? He has been honored with Willie Awards for his roles as Jerry/Daphne in Sugar, and Luther Billis in South Pacific. Mike received his degree in Political Science at San Jose State, and is an Office Manager by profession. He lives in a remodeled 1885 Victorian home with his partner Kent Scar-lata, 4 cars, 3 cats, and 1 rabbit.

Page 8: BAREFOOT IN THE PARK

RYAN NELSONPaul Bratter

Barefoot in the Park is Ryan Nelson’s first show at SCT--playing the lead character of Paul Bratter in Neil Simon’s famous romantic comedy classic. Ryan’s only previous live theatre role was as Frank

Scanlon in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest at Delta College. He holds a Psychology de-gree from Brigham Young University, and works at his “daytime job” in sales at Music Go Round. In addition to his budding the-atre career, Ryan enjoys performing improv comedy and plays the guitar. For all the sup-port that a young aspiring actor requires for success, he graciously thanks his “family and friends.”

HARRY STONERTelephone Man

“I’m thankful that SCT is in the community, giving its patrons quality produc-tions.” Harry Stoner began his SCT acting career with The Full Monty, an elabo-

rately staged musical, and now moves to a role in a romantic comedy. In other theaters he has performed in The Lion in Winter, Of Mice and Men, Tribute, Twelve Angry Men, and Mr. Roberts. Harry teaches at St. Mary’s High School and San Joaquin Delta College. He has a wife, Denise, and five children.

RICHARD R. GARVINDirector

Richard Garvin is well-know to SCT audiences as both a director and an actor, his current direc-tor’s engagement being Barefoot in the Park, and

his most recent acting role his magnificent performance as Roger Elizabeth De Bris in The Producers. Richard graduated from Stockton’s Edison High School, where he studied with Stockton Civic Theatre stal-warts Donovan Cummings and Judy Caruso Williamson. He then attended Pacific Con-servatory of the Perforning Arts in Santa Maria, where he was a student of Donovan Marley. After spending 12 years as an eq-uity player in professional theatre, Richard returned home to Stockton and has worked with SCT ever since. “Barefoot” is his 14th SCT directing assignment here, where he is highly regarded for his fresh approach to directing. He is married to the daughter of a well-known SCT family, Liz Kastner Garvin.

MELISSA ESAUCostumer“I opened this Season play-ing a Swede in The Pro-ducers, and am closing as a Norwegian in 'Mama.' Go figure!” Melissa Esau is one of the most recognized ac-tresses, singers and danc-ers on the SCT stage. She made her debut in Our Town in 1974, and last year played the part of Ulla in The Producers. She will be playing the I Remember Mama title role in the final production of the current Season. In recent years, Melissa has begun explor-ing her interests in new areas of production such as costuming and direction, last Season receiving a Willie Award for Best Direction of a Musical in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. She also received the theater’s coveted Applause Award at the 2009 Bravo event. She will be directing the theater’s mas-sive production of Oklahoma during the up-coming holiday season.

BRIAN SCOTT JOHNSONSet and Sound Design

Brian Johnson began his SCT affiliation with per-forming roles in Nunsen-sations and Wait Until Dark, then moved on to art and Scenic Design in regular productions and

the theater’s youth programs. He received a Willie Award for Scenic Design of Cinder-ella and also earned high praise for his use of mixed media --live action, video, and record-ed sound--in Joseph and the Amazing Tech-nicolor Dreamcoat. In his “real life,” Brian is a licensed contractor whose work may seen at JohnsonCustomPainting.com. He extends great appreciation to Terry and Jessica from the Scene Shop and Larry Streeter for build-ing another great set, and to Richard Garvin for the creative freedom and support he pro-vides. As always, Brian thanks his family for their great love.

EDIE NAYERStage Manager

“Thanks Richard, for yet another theatrical adven-ture!” Edie has stage-managed eight productions at SCT, six of them with Director Richard Garvin,

and has served as Assistant Director in ten shows. In addition to volunteering for SCT backstage duties, Edie has performed on-stage in Stepping Out, A Christmas Carol, and Once Upon a Mattress, and directed It Had to be Young. She is a retired teacher with a BA from Pacific and a MA from National University. As a teacher at Franklin High School, she worked with students in produc-ing The Fantastics and Snoopy.

MARK SHEASLEYLighting DesignMark Sheasley’s diverse set of theatrical skills are fixtures around SCT, and as such he has influenced countless SCT produc-tions--as a technician, a director, and an actor. His experience includes serv-ing as Shop Foreman then Technical Direc-tor for Sierra Repertory Theatre at both the East Sonora Theatre and the historic Fallon House in Columbia State Park. He has also worked as Technical Director for Palo Alto Children’s Theatre and Playhouse Merced. In his many years at SCT, he has held the titles of Technical Director, Bookkeeper, and Set and Lighting Designer. He directed SCT’s Enter Laughing, You Can’t Take It With You, and Wait Until Dark, and was seen on stage as the grumpy Toad in A Year with Frog and Toad. He received the Outstanding Set De-sign Willie for Blithe Spirit. Mark thanks his wife Joni for her constant love, support and encouragement.

The Economics of Community TheatreOne might assume that with nearly all seats filled at every performance, a not-for-profit theatre would have plenty of money.

Unfortunately, the revenue from tickets covers only about 40% of the theatre’s total expenses. And, without the generosity of the many volunteers who donate their time and talent—from the actors and set builders to the ushers and stage crews—it would not even cover that.

For other needs, we must reach out to the community for funding of operating expenses such as insurance, building maintenance, office supplies and postage; as well as the many educational and cultural programs we offer beyond our main stage. If we are to continue to offer this expanded program of theatre arts, we must turn to you.

Become a Sustaining Member as an Individual For 55 years, we have been bringing artistic, live theatre to the Stockton area.
