Local B2 | Walton Sun Saturday, July 9, 2011 I knew it would happen, but I just didn’t know when. The word arrived from my son via email Friday morning that he had asked Elizabeth to marry him. I knew when I met her that she would be the keeper; a mother can just tell these things. The two have a lot in common, and it was obvious she was crazy about my son. That’s always a good thing. They met in Washington, D.C., when both were newly hired at the National Credit Union Administration, hit it off immediately and kept in touch. For more than two years, they have overcome the obstacle of distance. She lives in New York; he lives in Birmingham, Ala. But they have made it into an adventure with them taking turns traveling north and south, meeting in the middle and rendezvousing in exotic places. One of these adventures was their week-long vacation last week to London that included a two-day side trip to Paris. After taking the exhilarating ride to the top of the Eiffel Tower, as they sat in the park admiring the lighted tower, Brett popped the question with a one-carat diamond solitaire. Before leaving on the trip, he had asked her dad for his blessing. I must say I am really proud and impressed with the way my son carried this out, and I couldn’t be more pleased with his choice. She is the right one for him. The only complaint I had was, why didn’t you tell your mother beforehand? My son laughed. “Because, mom, you would have told everybody!” Yep, he’s right. Welcome, Elizabeth! Rick and Karen Saunders welcomed new granddaughter Ava Lynn into the family in time for the 4th. Lane and Brenda Rees welcomed their son and his family home for the 4th. They enjoyed Seaside’s parade, along with Sheila Wachsman, Robin Wiesneth, Linda Miller, Laura Granberry, John Rosenberg, Mark and Paige Schnell, Robert Davis, Willie Mason, Leah Stroble, Paula and Jim Carter, Geri Golding and David Higgs, Coop and Peggy Jones, Kelli Arnold, Oliver Petit, and Hunter, Jami, and little Emery Ray. Hugh and Grace Marse hosted a post-parade party at their home. Debbie Weant-Lane enjoyed a picnic and fireworks at Grayton Beach. Dwight Ward, Annie Lockamy, Cheri Peebles, Donna and Richard Matthews were also there. Oli Petit, Billy and Kelly Buzzett, Leslie Provow, Kitty and Janet Taylor were in Grayton for its annual celebration. Robert and Marinella Monk hosted a fabulous 4th of July party around the pool at their bayside home Monday night. Andrea and Dennis Soltis, Donna Rhea, Dennis and Marsha Adamson, Jerry Graves, Toy and Rena Arnett were some who enjoyed their hospitality. From their dock we enjoyed fireworks shows from four locations. Margie and Dennis Dumler also hosted a 4th of July party at their Sandestin home Monday evening, where guests had a bird’s eye view of the Baytowne fireworks display. Madra McDonald celebrated the 4th in St. John. Margie Jordan spent the 4th in California with friends. Jane Soloman hosted her annual Live Oak Street Dance July 2. Paige Schnell, Payson Howard, Allison Craft, Sheila Goode and Gina Shiflett attended. Shellie Arriaga, Lane and Brenda Rees, Bobby Johnson, Rick Talbert, Allison Wickey, Anne Hunter, Eve Blair and Cheri Peebles were among those who enjoyed First Note Music Hall’s opening night. Nancy and Billy McConnell hosted a send-off party for Ronnie McBrayer last Friday night. Susan Thornton, Mario McNally and Anne Hunter were at The Naked Grape last Wednesday. Dread Clampitt played Pirate’s Cove in Josephine, Ala., last Saturday night. Sean Dietrich gave a classical guitar performance in Columbus, Ga. Kenny Chesney was seen hanging out in WaterColor. According to national news reports, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, Lions linebacker Bobby Carpenter, Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman and Saints coach Sean Payton played some beach football at WaterColor recently. Carol Dickson is back from Maryland. Carol Saucier is spending the month in Denver. Paige and Mark Schnell’s front porch along with Lynn Nesmith’s “30A Style” book is featured in the latest Birmingham Home and Garden. Walton Sun columnist Ron Hart took home a Benjamin Franklin Award for humor in his book “No Such Thing as a Pretty Good Alligator Wrestler,” which is a selection of his columns that appear in more than 40 newspapers. Hart, by day a managing investor, began his column in 2002 for his Columbia, Tenn., hometown paper, The Daily Herald. Buckhead publisher Schroder Media released the book last fall.
