Increasing access to a liberal arts college education while raising the standard of teaching and learning in public high schools.

• Three campuses:

– Bard High School Early College Manhattan, founded in 2001: 615 students

– Bard High School Early College Queens, founded in 2008: 637 students

– Bard High School Early College Newark, founded in 2012: 125 students to grow to 400

• Half day satellite campus embedded within New Orleans public school system enabling students to complete the first year of a Bard College undergraduate education concurrent with the last two years of high school (non-degree granting)

• Founded 2008

• 12 courses each semester; 12 faculty members, all terminal degree in their field

Bard raises $3000 per student per year and

receives $5700 per pupil from the DOE

For BHSEC Queens, this year Bard College provided $1.8 million dollars above what we received from the Department of Education

What does it save?

• Eliminates two years of traditional college tuition

• Eliminates need for remedial classes so often necessary for

students entering community colleges or four year colleges

• Engages students to become more responsible, productive

students and citizens

There is an emphasis on writing to give the time and space to note what you are thinking which then allows you to explore avenues that you were not aware you thought.

BardMAT: Reconceiving Teacher Ed

Initiatives • Educating teachers who are “experts” in their subject areas and adept in

structuring learning environments as sites of disciplinary apprenticeship.

• Placing and retaining more such highly effective teachers in high needs schools

• Creating a shared campus – high need school and graduate program

• Creating a faculty dominated by disciplinary experts

• Building a community of teachers across a network of public schools

• Educating teachers to teach college courses in 11th and 12th Grade

• Bringing Music into public schools through El Sistema-based program with Longy School of Music and LA Philharmonic as partners

• Delano, CA in the San Joaquin Valley, with some of the highest poverty rates nationally.

• Palestine and East Jerusalem, in collaboration with the Al-Quds University and the Palestinian Ministry of Education.

• Currently serving 60 pre-service teachers on three campuses in the United States.
