Plans for the refurbishment of Ram Park will soon be put into action, with the area to be closed during the summer while restorations take place.

Blackall Tambo Regional Council CEO Ken Timms said work would hopefully commence within a month.

“We’ll be starting to commence painting and some maintenance work, and there’ll also be some work done to the display,” Mr Timms said.

“We’ve already lined up tradesmen and we’re down to the finer points about what to do first,” he said.

“The overall fix up cost is greater than our budget so we have to prioritise.”

At the October council meeting, a number of recommendations by the Friends of Ram Park Advisory Committee were endorsed including development of an application for RADF funding for assistance to document the collection and provide collection management training for Ram Park personnel.

The blueprint for the upgraded facility also includes inviting the Blackall Historical Society to relocate to the Navena Homestead and assist in site preservation, approaching volunteers from 60s and Better and the Visitor Information Centre for assistance and closing and amalgamating an unmade road to the north of the site and the two reserves adjacent

to Ram Park. The reserves and Ram Park

would then be consolidated into a new reserve for local government historical purposes.

Mr Timms said the refurbishment of Ram Park would allow council to start the relocation process planned for several services.

“The Visitor Information Centre will be moving to Ram Park, then we’ll be looking at how to manage the other moves,” Mr Timms said.

With the relocation of the Visitor Information Centre, it is planned for its current building to become the library, with council’s community service to move into the library building.

The old Yalleroi railway building at Ram Park is set to become the new site of the Visitor Information Centre in 2012.

Editorial

Congratulations to the Blackall Tambo Regional Council Community Service Team in Blackall on the success of their “Feel Good – Feel Better” Day at the St Joseph’s Mackillop Centre.

The 2011 Outback Queensland Tourism Awards will be hosted by the Blackall Tambo Regional Council at a Gala Evening on Saturday October 29 in the Blackall Cultural Centre.

I was able to see firsthand the preparations made by Chris Buckley Plumbing for the installation of the sewerage pump station at the Blackall Industrial Estate. The project has been successfully kept on schedule. Once the pump station has been installed and the site leveled, work will commence on the construction of roadways in the area. The Blackall Tambo Regional Council has received firm enquiry for sites in the industrial estate to date.We look forward to progressing the end result of having a well appointed designated area in which to position industrial development in

both Blackall and Tambo.Progress made on the Dismal

Creek approaches and sidetrack were also inspected with road rebuilding works well underway. The final seal on the 3 km section constructed by the Barcaldine Regional Council will be completed by the Blackall Tambo Regional Council.

Travelling on the Champion Road through to the Tumbar Road I was able to see firsthand the work completed thus far on the Erne Crossing, where the approaches have been leveled off to give a smoother gradient to and from the crossing especially for road trains. Work is progressing on flood damage work closer to the Landsborough Highway with the gravel sub base being formed.

The workforce crew engaged in Road Maintenance Project Contract work on the Landsborough Highway were attending to a failure closer to Blackall.

With 2011 coming to a close, it is once again time to think about Australia Day Award nominations

for your choice of Citizen of the Year, and the other awards which recognize the contributions of those community members who offer a stand out dedication to their community.

--Jan Ross

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

The end of the year is fast approaching and it seems that everyone’s schedules are getting busier. There are millions of events happening and so much that everyone needs to get sorted out before Christmas rolls around. This abundance of events makes the last few months of the year very busy here at the Barcoo Independent.

With that in mind, I would like to encourage advertisers to think about their Christmas messages for the newspaper. I would also like to request that anyone with

events planned in the near future to provide with information as early as they can to ensure that I am able to allocate them the space they deserve in the paper.

It is also important that I receive date claimers as early as possible so that I can have them on record to make scheduling of colour editions, attendance at events and many other things more efficient. If your organisation has already allocated a date for an event in 2012, please let me know so that I can add it to my calendar.

Jan Ross recently presented Tambo’s Edna Sargood with flowers and a letter to mark her 90th birthday. Tambo’s Bill and Dot Holmes were presented with a crystal vase and a letter in recognition of their 60th wedding aniversary.

October weatherConditions continued to warm up

throughout October with the highest temperature for the month up until Wednesday October 26 recorded on October 26 at 37 °C.

The lowest minimum temperature for the month was recorded on October 2 at 2.8°C.

This was the lowest minimum temperature recorded in Blackall since October 1 1982 with a measurement of 3°C.

Conditions remained dry with a total of 10.2 mm of rainfall with the maximum wind gust recorded on October 1 at a 12:41pm in west south west direction at 59 km per hour.

Blackall’s only life member of the Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association state council, Daphne Rich was given a rousing reception at the group’s 40th conference held in Rockhampton recently.

A longstanding secretary and the organisation’s first treasurer, Mrs Rich was one of 10 councillors from the 1970s who took part in the ruby anniversary celebrations.

Others there from western Queensland who have been 40 year stalwarts of the rural education lobby group included Teresa Cobb (Yaraka/Isisford), John Tully (Quilpie), Garth and Sue Ferguson (Dirranbandi and Aramac), Trish Mitchell (Cloncurry), Jan Gall (Blackall), Gillian Allen (Augathella), Geoff Arthur (Cunnamulla), Mark

Stoneman (Nebo) and inaugural president Bunny Powne (Bollon).

Also present was Daphne’s husband Fred Rich who was a trustee for ICPA Queensland until it became incorporated, along with Mr Powne and former Blackall resident Paul Vail.

Mr Powne opened the conference and spoke of the dedication put in by councillors and branch members in the organisation’s early years.

“The greatest majority of people who filled positions on the early committees are the most amazing people I have ever worked with,” he said.

“Independently they may have been in a desperate situation but they pulled out all stops to ensure a better education for all kids in

the bush.”On the day that the Queensland

Council was formed at a meeting in Charleville, Mrs Rich braved flash flooding, which flooded the interior of her car, to attend the meeting.

She told today’s delegates at Rockhampton about early fundraising efforts and trying to do a volunteer lobbying job with only a party line phone and weekly mail service.

Mr Powne reminded delegates to always remember they were the experts in the problems affecting them when speaking to people who have never taught their own children or taught in small schools with composite classrooms.

Daring to dream about ‘one day travelling and painting in Tuscany’ has led to an inspirational exhibition that will open at the Grassland Art Gallery in Tambo on November 5.

Twelve artists, most of who reside in Queensland’s regional areas travelled to a beautiful and unique part of Tuscany in Italy called Radda in the autumn of 2010. The artists had all worked with and been mentored by Metka Skrobar and readily joined her to spend two weeks in this idyllic location to paint, travel and immerse themselves in the region and the Italian lifestyle.

Accommodated in a refurbished 11th century monastery, the group created many little masterpieces depicting Radda, nearby Florence, Siena the walled city in the south and vineyards, villages and hilltop

towns in the region of Chianti. The twelve artists exhibiting

are Sally Campbell, Heather Wehl, Ruth Jones, Di McIntyre, Jan Kilsby, Ann Baillie, Pat Hinz, Chris Kirby, Leonie Hopgood, Margaret Khoo, Metka Skrobar as well as fifteen year old Anastazia Pirnat from Slovenia who joined the group in Italy. Anastazia had previously experimented in pastels until she went to an art workshop in Tuscany with Metka, where she was introduced to watercolours.

The group have all been inspired by their adventure; former Blackall resident Heather Wehl considers the trip to be amongst the highlights of her career and was one of the four who had work selected in the exhibition, ‘Sensual Italy’, which was hung in the Broom St Gallery, Soho, New York City, as well as Blackall

artist Sally Campbell. Metka and her husband, Karl

will be returning from exhibiting in Slovenia in time to travel to Tambo to open the “Tuscan Dreamers” exhibition on the evening of November 5.

The Blackall Cultural Association is set to tap into the tourism market with plans to launch two arts tourism packages in 2012 in a project entitled Out There!

The packages aim to extend the use of the Blackall Living Arts Centre, as well as bring a financial benefit to the town.

The first package is a five day workshop for artists from other regions who will stay at the Living Arts Centre with a well known tutor. As well as the workshop,

students will be immersed in the culture of the Blackall area with visits to the wool scour, a cattle station, Idalia National Park and the chance to meet locals.

The association hopes to hold two or three of these workshops each year.

The association will also offer a weekend package available to coincide with the local race meetings. Visitors will fly in on Friday and out on Monday, take in a race meeting, enjoy lunch on

a cattle station, visit the Blackall Aquatic Centre, sample a red meat barbecue and meet the locals.

The Blackall Cultural Association will engage a part time project officer/manager to develop and establish these packages as well as manage the Living Arts Centre.

Out There! was funded by the Queensland Government’s Building Rural Communities Fund through the Blueprint for the Bush initiative.

Cancer Council Queensland and Queensland Health are calling on central Queensland organisations to apply for the 2011 SunSmart Grant Scheme.

The scheme was launched last month and aims to support skin cancer prevention and encourage central Queensland organisations to adopt sun smart policies.

SunSmart Co-ordinator at Cancer Council Queensland, Rachel Adams, said the SunSmart Grant Scheme aims to assist organisations who have limited funds to work towards increased sun safety.

“The SunSmart Grant Scheme provides grants to organisations in Central Queensland, whose primary focus group is children

aged 12 years and younger, to help them purchase items that will enhance sun protection for the children in their care and promote sun safe behaviour,” she said.

Organisations can apply for the grant and contribute the funding to creating new shade structures (fixed and portable), sun safe hats, uniforms, tree planting and sunscreen provision.

Applications close at 5pm on 11 November 2011 and funded projects must be finalised by 30 March 2012.

To apply for a grant, please contact Rachel Adams at Cancer Council Queensland on 4690 5803, email [email protected] or apply online at www.cancerqld.org.au.

Sixteen separate buyers contributed to a total clearance of 97 rams at the Terrick Merinos annual on property sale at Amaroo on October 4.

A top price of $1450 was paid twice, by David and Heather Morton, Neleh Downs Isisford and Paula Dean, Notus Downs, Longreach. The Mortons bought eight rams on the day.

Other volume buyers on the day were Brian and Gay Tully, Tenham, Quilpie with 15, Peter and Elizabeth Clarke, Leander, Longreach with 13 and Peter and Donna Batt, Eldwick, Jundah, who purchased 10.

The Wood family at Koondoo, Blackall and Tony Jackson, Yarrawa Downs, Isisford, bought 9 rams apiece.

Smaller lots were purchased by Bruce and Lisa Alexander, Warringah, Blackall, Woodbine Livestock Trading, Blackall, CF and EJ Counsell, Barcaldine, Harry and Susan Glasson, Greenlaw, Yaraka, Mark Walker, Rosedale, Longreach, Geoff Pegler Wallyah, and Bill and Sally Cripps, Melrose, Blackall.

The 97 rams averaged $845 and Rick and Jenny Keogh were very pleased with the result and the attendance on the day. Seventy people were present.

The Member for Gregory, Vaughan Johnson took time out from his busy schedule and

attended the day. Mr Keogh spoke before the sale

about some of the many problems that are facing graziers at this point in time but focused on the chronic wild dog issue facing sheep and wool producers and some cattle producers.

He pointed out that in most cases people on the land are willing to face variations in weather and markets and other issues without fuss, but with the wild dog problem as it stood, help was needed at a government level.

Mr Johnson responded by saying the opposition was very aware of the wild dog problem as well as the prickly issue of coal seam gas.

He suggested the LNP was looking at co-ordinated blanket baiting of western areas with a full strength 1080 and paying realistic bounties to address the problem.

He also touched on the drain of youth from the bush and stressed how important it was to educate and then create the incentives for young people to return to rural areas.

Mr Johnson spoke at length about many issues faced by all people in rural areas and his presence and comments were well received on the day.

Rick and Jenny Keogh thanked all those who attended the day and the many people who helped in some way to put it on.

At the October meeting, Blackall Tambo Regional Council resolved to proceed with the next stage of the Tambo Shear Power project when they accepted the proposal from Harbinger Consultants to develop a full feasibility study and action/implementation plan for the Tambo Cultural Heritage Project.

The initial stage which was funded with a Tourism projects Pre-feasibility grant from the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation undertook a preliminary analysis for a cultural heritage tourism facility, specifically a wool and shearing interpretive centre, for the town of Tambo.

This initial study identified merit in the proposal and recommended that a full feasibility study be prepared. A full feasibility study will refine the pre-feasibility study to a level where all risks can be quantified and contained, and where contingency costs are reduced to a minimum and will include a detailed implementation and action plan.

The feasibility study will be developed by the consultants in conjunction with council officers who will be responsible for the development of the business plan which will be the key document utilised to leverage potential funding for the project.

This exciting project will soon be underway and a reference group of key stakeholders will be established to define the concept and establish the vision for the project.

Anyone who would like to be considered as a reference group participant or contribute in any way to this project is asked to contact Alison Shaw [email protected] or 0428546107.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORIt all began as a tongue in cheek

idea that grew into the adventure of a life time. The conversation developed and the suggestion to make it real and raise money for charity was raised. It didn’t take much to decide on helping raise funds for Angel Fight as the cause. This group do an amazing amount of work in the region and don’t receive any government funding.

One of our reasons behind the idea was to bring some focus back into the region after hard times, made worse by the floods in January. Another reason was to encourage our friend to really start work on his museum venture.

It took months of preparation, meetings, “hat in hand” visits requesting donations and hundreds of letters requesting sponsorship and general organising.

We knew from previous visits that there was brilliant scenery, amazing landscapes, brilliant weather, gracious people, and mountains of history.

We knew from the beginning it would test friendships and build

new relationships. This adventure meant driving and camping for two days to get to the start point.

We were welcomed by strangers so appreciative of our undertaking and the benefits it would bring the area that no request was too big. We met many different people from different spheres of life. It was a once in a life time because even if you do it a second time, it will never be like the first.

The madness of the first morning caused an unexpected and dangerous situation to develop. After it was confirmed that no one was hurt and the horses were relatively unharmed and able to continue, an amazing thing happened. You often hear about the warmth and generosity of the country people but once you are on the receiving end of this phenomenon you can get very emotional and overwhelmed.

Was there grief and drama? Yes, every day in some form or other but it didn’t stop anyone. Everyone that started the trek finished it. The last evening was

pleasant with many conversations and congratulations. As a whole many gave us thanks and encouragement that it was a wonderful life experience that they were pleased they had finished and been part of. We had some laughs, made some presentations, announced the possible donation amount to Angel Flight and finally got to have a drink. I made the time to talk to other trekkers and have cemented a number of life time friendships.

Did it all go to plan? No way! But each day holds precious moments of experience, warmth, laughter, smiles conversations and “you had to be there” experiences, plus we raised a few thousand for charity.

Next time I’ll just really take it all in and let someone else do the worrying, but at the end of the day I can’t help being an organiser.

Two sides of the coin, one as an organiser, the other as a participant. Would I do it as both again? Ask me after the next one.

--Barbara Field

Two sides of the coin- Blackall to Jericho Wool Trek

Blackall-Tambo Regional Council Community Services would like to thank the community for their participation at the Feel Good ~ Feel Better Day. It is a credit to those of you who attended the evening.

The objective of this day was to raise awareness of the importance of looking after our mental health and personal wellbeing. Ron Unwin from Longreach RFDS, Dave Kerrigan from Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs service and Heather Marshall, Nutritionist with Red Cross Barcaldine were also in attendance with good advice and resources which they have kindly donated and made available through the Blackall Community Service Office at 14 Coronation Drive.

A huge thank you for the time given by Blue Light Association president, Bruce Trickett for the Boot Camp activities, Melit Furneaux for leading the Yoga

session and Cecele and Keely Pitt for leading Zumba.

Marion Langdon, Angelique Jones and Janelle Jeynes were kept busy administering mini massage sessions and by all reports more than a few kinks were ironed out and I thank them for their attendance.

Also thank you to St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School principal, Tim Franzmann and all the students who eagerly assisted in the setup and clean-up along with the P&F for organising refreshments for the evening.

Shockwave co-ordinator Bonny Lawrence organised a small team of helpers to raise money for Shockwave 2012 selling slushies and face painting and Veronica and Kim Driver were busy selling popcorn on the night for the hospital. Their participation added to the evening’s events and we thank them for attending.

The Mackillop Centre with its

new movie screen and surround sound system was a great venue for the screening of the Australian movie “Red Dog”. This movie showcased how a community can be brought together in the face of adversity and even though there were a few sad moments, there were also plenty of light hearted happenings as well.

Last but not least, thanks to Lily Kent for the effort, care and attention taken by her in ensuring the evening ran smoothly for us all to enjoy.

This event was funded by Department of Communities through the Blackall Community Service program and supported by Blackall – Tambo Regional Council.

Brisbane writer Nick Earls is well known for a certain type of novel… the warm, humourous, often touching tales of every day Australian men usually in their late teens to mid twenties.

His latest novel The Fix goes well beyond his usual type though, introducing a new element of suspense and intrigue.

20-something Josh Lang is a journalist who has recently returned to Brisbane after several years living in London. He is undeniably the type of character often referred to as an underdog, with those around him constantly implying that he’s yet to get his life together.

He is reluctantly roped into a PR position at a law firm, managing the coverage of an employee who was awarded a Star of Courage

after saving a colleague’s life. It just so turns out that the hero

in question turns out to be Josh’s old friend Ben Harkin, who he hasn’t spoken to since university days after the friendship turned sour.

As Josh reacquaints himself with Ben, he slowly starts to see cracks in the story of Ben’s heroic moment and asking questions that are carefully evaded.

The novel carefully deals with the issue of truth with an intensity that belies Earls’ usually comedic style with a slow burning sense of suspense building to the last climactic pages.

Sometimes this process seems a little too drawn out and that’s where Earls wry humour is put to good use as he cannily deconstructs every day scenes

from mini-golf to a family barbecue to an unconventional outing with a group of visiting Korean businessmen.

Insert a romance with Hayley, law student by day, nightclub dancer by night and you’ve got the ingredients for a highly amusing but realistic tale.

Hayley could have been a horrible cliché as a character but yet Earls is careful not to pigeonhole her, instead imbuing her with intelligence and wit.

The Fix was a very enjoyable read, with its intelligent humour and sense of the absurd tempering out the mysterious elements of the story to make for a well balanced novel.

Staying positive against breast cancer

The mood was light last Saturday when Blackall members and supporters of breast cancer support group West n Breast joined Melit Furneaux for a belated birthday celebration held at Daisy Cottage.

When breast cancer survivor Melit Furneaux had her birthday recently, she could only think of one way to celebrate- by gathering local breast cancer survivors and supporters for a lunch at local café Daisy Cottage.

In accordance with this plan, last Saturday the garden at Daisy Cottage saw the group of ladies turn out for the celebration, with many dressed in pink in keeping with the theme of the day.

The celebration also included harmonic renditions of Happy Birthday and Amazing Grace, with many guests members of the choir.

When asked if she had any birthday wishes Melit said she would like for all women to vigilant this October during Breast Cancer Awareness month and to pay attention to their bodies.

“No one should have to go through what we have had to and early detection is so important,” Melit said.
