BLACKALL SHOW RESULTS INSIDE

The countdown is on for the Heartland Festival, which is set to light up the west in a week’s time.

It will kick off with a huge weekend in Blackall on May 27-29 – big names including an Archibald Prize finalist showing high quality art, an international food and beer fest, heaps of dancing and music from local talent and Victorian country music sensations Victoria Baillie and Paul Costa, and even more food, coupled with the launch of a book and poetry given a modern musical twist at a breakfast.

Mouthwatering menus being served up at the food fiesta at the Blackall showgrounds on Saturday, May 28 include Greek lamb, kangaroo pies, Guinness stew, French and Japanese influenced dishes, and generous servings of Aussie themed barbecue meals.

The groups preparing these have been conducting taste tests around town and wowing people with their melt in the mouth flavours.

The festival committee itself is offering gourmet beef and lamb sausages with a mountain pepperberry sauce and onions.

Patrons can wash that down with a selection of beers from around the world – Mexico, Netherlands, Ireland and Asia – along with the best that Tasmania and Queensland have to offer, or a range of wines and spirits.

All the red meat in the menus

is being supplied by local sources, Tendabeef at Blackall and Silverwood organic lamb at Longreach.

Before Paul Costa hits the stage in the evening a full lineup of entertainment will be filling the Heartland Festival stage from 3pm – the state school band, choirs, dance crews, African drummers and Blackall’s very own Divas, with new tunes to charm the audience all over again.

A lantern parade will also light up the night sky, and DJ Dave will have his laser disco rocking for the younger age group.

Entry prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children, capped at $25 for a family.

People can pre-purchase tickets

from Tamara Hardie at Landmark or Danielle Butler and these will be exchanged for armbands on the night.

Starting the opening weekend and the festival proper is the Heartland Art Exhibition at the Blackall Cultural Centre, which will this year be hosting a massive 200 artworks for competition and sale. Festival patron Gina Fairfax will open the evening which will see works in 3D feature this year alongside paintings.

Rounding off the weekend is the Heart-y Breakfast at the Arts Centre – join the Blackall Walking Group for a jaunt around the sights of town before tucking into a scrumptious menu and listening to the poetry of Brisbane’s Graham Nunn.

He will be accompanied by blues player Sheish Money for poetry like you’ve never heard it before.

The morning will also feature the launch of a book that promotes the delights of Blackall – Da Best Little Town in the West – by Bill and Carolyn Hauff.

From the Editor

The past week sped by with a varied and very diverse program. The council meeting of May 11 was the centre point of the week with a full agenda of items for consideration by Council. Deputations were made by planner Lou Scaparto as we undertake to ensure we have a planning scheme which is relevant to our needs in the Blackall Tambo region.

Some of the decisions made by Council at their meeting included an endorsement of a Memorandum Of Understanding between Blackall Tambo regional Council, Barcaldine regional Council and the Longreach Regional Council to pursue a cooperative gathering of information to enable the cooperative Local Governments to reach appropriate financial, social and environmental decisions in regard to the best options for a regional waste management approach.

A tender was accepted from Shane Robinson to undertake construction of a mezzanine floor and skillion roof on a concrete slab at the Blackall Branch Workshop to ensure adequate office space for staff.

A comprehensive calendar of community events was presented to council. It was resolved to take this information to the June strategic planning meeting to discuss the financial and In Kind support or commitment of council associated with community events in both Blackall and Tambo.

The Department of the Environment and Resource

Management valuer was on hand to speak with council in regard to the steep rise in the urban valuations of land in our region. There is a comprehensive map in the foyer of each of our branches for everyone to see their new valuation. There is also an avenue for residents to raise their objections, should they be inclined to do so. The Department of the Environment and Resource Management were in Blackall to discuss the issues of water and the environmental planning authorities’ regulations in relation to waste

and the management of waste in our region. There was also the opportunity to raise issues in relation to state land such as reserves.

The creation of the Red Ridge Foundation and Company was another exciting first for myself and for chairman Cr Peter Skewes. The Foundation is to be a philanthropic organization with funds to be directed at the Arts in the Interior of Queensland. All donations are tax deductible and the funds directed to Arts in the Interior of Queensland. Members of the Board include Sculptor William Eicholst and Company Director Warren Tapp. There will be further information available in the near future for all households in western Queensland.

The past two days have been spent in Longreach at a remote area meeting, an outback regional roads meeting and a Central West Regional Planning Committee meeting.

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

Blackall is about to go into a very busy couple of weeks with the Heartland Festival and Shockwave Festival keeping schedules busy.

Due to this busier than usual timetable, I have to kindly ask that people try to remember advertising and content deadlines. It’s important that I receive information as early as possible, particularly during this hectic period.

Despite the pandemonium induced by all the coming events, I do believe that the next few weeks will be very rewarding for our community. Anyone who says there’s nothing to do in Blackall clearly hasn’t looked at the What’s On column in the Barcoo Independent lately.

To ensure the success of the Heartland Festival and Shockwave Festival, I’d like to encourage

everyone to get involved. I know the Shockwave festival is still recruiting volunteers, with a volunteer briefing to be held on June 1.

Even by attending and supporting these events we can ensure the continuance of such a vibrant social calendar into the future.

I hope to see many of you throughout all the festival events.

Kimberley gets her wings

Kimberley Storey out at the Blackall airport with her flying instructor Murray Knight.

The sky’s the limit for Blackall teenager Kimberley Storey after receiving her pilots’ licence last week.

Kimberley has been taking monthly lessons with flying instructor Murray Knight from Matt’s Flying since February and after twenty two hours of flying has gained a licence to fly solo within a radius of 50km.

Michael Butler from Athol also received his pilot’s licence last week after instruction with Murray, with Kirstie Davison also taking lessons.

Matt’s Flying is a business run by Matthew Kucks of Samford with chief flying instructor Murray giving flying lessons across regional Queensland including

Blackall, Mackay and Emerald. Murray said that receiving

her licence at such a young age was a great accomplishment for Kimberley.

“I first sent her out solo exactly a week after her seventeenth birthday,” Murray said.

Kimberley will be able to use her licence to fly at the Storey family’s Cunnamulla property, Fermoy.

Kimberley said her father, Robert Storey, already had his pilot’s licence and that he had helped motivate her.

“Dad started off flying and encouraged me to get my licence as something handy to have,” Kimberley said.

“Dad’s pretty proud and it’s a good skill to have.”

Mural artBlackall State School students

have been getting artistic this week with a visit from Murwillumbah artist Christian Griffiths.

Recently returned from the Sheffield Mural Fest held in Tasmania, Christian has 16 years of mural experience and runs his own professional art business, Aerograffix.

During the week Christian has been creating murals at the State School including one on the wall of the newly built multi-purpose centre and one on a toilet block, as well as running workshops with the students.

Christian originally came from a graffiti art background, but has expanded his field to include landscapes and fine art.

This is Christian’s tenth visit to Blackall and his time in the west inspires him, he said.

“I find out here the students tend to like to see something a bit more urban, but the country inspires me to do more landscapes,” Christian said.

After his visit to Blackall, Christian is headed to Barcaldine to run workshops with Barcaldine State School and St Joseph’s Barcaldine students.

He is disappointed to miss this year’s Heartland festival, but has entered several canvases in the Heartland Art Exhibition, Christian said.

Ray White Rural in Blackall has a new agent with Andrew Turner formerly of Wandoan commencing work on May 3.

Andrew has a wealth of experience in trading cattle and is settling into the Blackall community extremely well with his wife Emma and three young boys, Billy, Freddie and Jimmy.

He looks forward to doing business here for a long time and has said he has already booked a spot in the retirement village for 2051.

Ray White Rural’s new agent Andrew Turner is enjoying life in Blackall.

New agent in townSome changes are underway for

St Patrick’s church in Blackall as well as for the western region with the departure of Fr Matthew Moloney from Blackall.

Bishop Brian Heenan has asked Fr Matthew to take on additional responsibilities in the Central West which will see him relocate to Longreach although his ministry will still include Blackall and Tambo areas.

His new appointment is parish priest of Longreach, embracing the entire central western deanery, the Bishop Brian said.

He will be assisted by Indian Missionary Priest Fr John Tete HGN, who will live in Longreach with Fr Matthew, and Fr Renaldo Rodriguez SVD, who will live in

Blackall. Fr Ronaldo is one of three Divine

Word Missionary Priests in the diocese.

They will share the ministry with Fr Matthew across the Central West.

Fr Ronaldo and Fr John will celebrate Mass with the Blackall community at St Patrick’s church on Sunday May 29 at 5pm.

A farewell celebration will be held for Fr Matthew this Sunday from 5pm at the St Patrick’s Parish Centre.

All are welcome to attend and are asked to bring their own drinks and a hot dish to share.

Country music singer songwriter Paul Costa will work with youth and adult community members to deliver singing and songwriting workshops in Blackall as part of the Heartland Festival.

The country music singer who hails from Victoria is a multi-award winning artist, including four golden guitar nominations.

Paul has been in demand since 2004 when he released his debut solo album Walkin’ In These Shoes.

The title track of his latest album is a window into Paul Costa now. “In This Life is the song that I wanted the whole album to be about,” Paul said.

“It’s about life from where I see it - the many choices and goals we have and being aware that it’s okay to have dreams and to be different.”

The “Light up the West” workshops will encourage participants to explore their inner stories as well as those of the region and in doing so develop material that helps to share these stories with the world.

There is also an opportunity for some participants to perform material they have written at the Heartland Food and Music Fiesta.

Sessions for adults will be held at the Living Arts Centre on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 May from 5-8pm and at both schools during the week.

Workshop organiser, Alison Mobbs is hoping that many talented locals will attend the workshops.

“There are talented Blackall residents who would be inspired by this opportunity and I am sure they will take advantage of it,” she said.

Blackall girls awarded Starburst grantsThe recipients of the regional

mentoring Starburst grants for 2011 have been announced, and Blackall residents Jess and Rachel Walker are on the list.

The Starburst regional mentoring program is open to artists and arts workers between 15 and 30 living in remote and regional Queensland.

Each recipient is teamed with a mentor within their field from whom they will receive feedback, hints, industry expertise and assistance in developing their projects.

Each Starburst recipient also has access to a grant of up to $2000 each to assist with the creative development of their work.

Jess received her Starburst grant to assist her in developing her photography skills and has been teamed with Longreach photographer Peter Scott.

Peter runs a local photography business Outback Pics and the Outback Gallery in Longreach with another photographer Debra Hogan.

Under his mentorship Jess plans to produce a 2012 calendar featuring her own photographs to be sold in the Blackall community.

The grant has also allowed Jess to purchase her own digital SLR camera.

Rachel has received the grant to allow her to receive financial recompense for her role as volunteers’ co-ordinator for Shockwave Festival, while also receiving event management mentorship from Shockwave organiser Brooke Newall.

Brooke will be teaching Rachel skills needed in running large scale events such as using spreadsheets and developing contacts lists.

Rachel said she was pleased to have received the grant, although she would have taken on the role even if she had not been sucessful.

“It’s nice to know that when I’m spending a bit of time on it that I’m actually getting paid for it,” she said.

Also receiving Starburst grants

are Bobbi Wilson from Ilfracombe and Jeremiah Faulkner of Longreach who will also showcase their talents at the Shockwave Festival.

Bobbi Wilson received the grant as one of the founders of the Retro Pixies dance troupe, and will receive mentorship in choreographing dances.

Jeremiah Faulkner is also known as DJ Jezza, and the grant will allow him to purchase his own DJ equipment.

He will be mentored by DJ Nic C and the two will perform a DJ duel with him at Shockwave with Jeremiah using modern equipment and DJ Nic C using the traditional turn tables.

Brooke Newall said it was exciting to see so many Starburst grants awarded within the region and it was a great opportunity for all the recipients.

“Of all the regions in Queensland, the central west is the highest represented with four recipients,” she said.

BirthdaysHappy Birthday

Lance, William, Catherine, JonathanandtheirfamilieswouldliketowishtheirwifeandmotherKerrylynParfittawonderful50thbirthday.

We would like to compliment the Blackall Show Society president Judy Atkinson and committee for a job well done. As visitors to the area for the May Day weekend, we went to the show with no expectations. However we had the best day of fun and entertainment.

Our highlights included the team penning which we had never heard of before and found to be exciting spectator entertainment. The pavilion with photography and

craft had impressive entries. The little pigs were hilarious to watch as well as the tank characters.

Top marks go to the local kindy group for providing a marquee and seating then presenting a simple yet exotic Greek meal, with complimentary wine or beer for $15. Well done girls.

Thank you Blackall community for a friendly fun day!

The Blackall Girl Guides group is imploring the community to support them at their upcoming AGM.

A previous attempt to hold an AGM failed to gather enough people for the meeting to progress.

“We have a leader, we have the girls, we have the finance, but we don’t have a full support group in a working committee,” Girl Guides president Liela Harvey said.

“If we don’t have a support group, headquarters will close us down.

The AGM will be held on May 25 at the Guide hut from 4:30pm.

Guides call for support

As Barron Agencies have met all the requirements of the Blackall Livestock Auction Association, it seems unreasonable and unjust to refuse their application.

I would like to say that Jeremy is

an excellent agent who works very hard for his clients and he is the best agent I have had in almost 50 years in the rural industry.

Places are still available for lantern and songwriting workshops happening in Blackall next week in the leadup to the Heartland Festival.

Community artist Tamara Kirby is travelling out from the Sunshine Coast to teach the art of creating giant lanterns that will light up the festival.

A big sun and moon are planned along with some animals westerners are more familiar with.

Workshops will be held at the Arts Centre during the week of May 23-27, and there are activities planned at the schools as well.

The results will be displayed around Blackall for the festival, firstly at the Heartland Art Exhibition on the night of Friday, May 27, then in a spectacular lantern parade at the food and music fiesta the next night at the showgrounds.

The cute animated costumes created for the western show circuit will have an encore performance during the parade as well.

The lanterns’ grand finale will be at the Shockwave Festival on the final weekend of the Heartland festivities.

Karla Ward is taking bookings for the lantern making workshops.

Alison Mobbs is the person to see about the songwriting workshops being conducted by country music star Paul Costa.

Happening next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before he performs at the food and music fiesta, Paul has lots of practice in writing songs and has lots of good ideas to share.

These are also happening at the Living Arts Centre in Hawthorne Street.

The two workshops being run during the week of

the festival – painting and photography – still have a couple of places left in each to learn new skills.

Sydney’s David Aderman has presented his composition and creativity photography workshop in some of the world’s biggest cities – Boston in the US and London in the UK – but he is keen to meet the people of western Queensland.

His workshops are on Monday and Tuesday, May 30-31 and on Thursday, June 2, an outdoor sunset shooting session.

Cees Sliedrecht is the feature artist for the visual artists enjoying the festival. His workshop gets underway at the Arts Centre from May 28 and will run for the next five day until June 1.

Well-known artist Summer Brook-Jones is coming to town for these days and is offering her picture framing service as well.

She will be available at the Barcoo Hotel caravan park from May 16 to June 2.

Blackall State School is set to celebrate State Education Week from May 23-27 with a variety of celebratory events planned over the week.

Kicking off the week at a special parade on Monday at 10.30am will be the annual “Hero Awards”.

These awards recognise the outstanding achievements and contributions of past students and community members.

Previous winners have included Megan Prow, Marie Messer, Ross Dagan, Monica Bailey and Ian Kinsey.

“These awards allow a vehicle for our current students to understand the excellence that Blackall State School produces, and importantly these ‘heroes’ inspire our students to reach for their own broad horizon,” principal Jason Smith said.

“We have been overwhelmed

with the quality of nominations for this year, especially for the past student awards.”

Following the Hero Awards a light “Heroes’ Luncheon” will be served, whilst the students begin the week long heats of “Blackall’s Got Talent” at 11.20am.

Heats will continue all week with the grand final on Friday 27th at 11.20am with special guest judges, singer-songwriters Paul Costa and Melinda Wells.

For the sporting bodies in the school Monday 1.20pm sees the start of the basketball competition for the week.

Wednesday will be a busy day with pre-service teacher Harley Kowald-Dawson taking the reins as principal for a day, starting from 8.40am at a whole school assembly.

Meanwhile students’ parents, grandparents and family members

will have a chance to see the school in action on Open Day attending classes with their children.

Students will also have the opportunity to make lanterns in the afternoon, ready for Shockwave.

Following up on Thursday, students will rally together for the World’s Biggest Morning Tea at 11.20pm, sharing food and their ‘pink’ free dress in support of a cure for cancer.

The week’s celebrations will come to the conclusion on Friday starting with a special breakfast for the P&C to acknowledge P&C Day and finishing with the finals of Blackall’s Got Talent and the Basketball competition.

“We’ve planned a great week of fun and sharing and are looking forward to having our community and students celebrate State Education Week,” commented Mr Smith.
