HISTORY OF BARBIE

• First invented by Ruth Handler in 1959

•Barbie symbolizes the free woman. (Free as in, free to expose herself and live with little moral limitations) This disagreed with many cultures.

•Middle Eastern areas disapproved greatly of Barbie. Japan also did not like the original doll. Both areas created their own dolls to sell to their children.

DIFFERENCES

Between Sara and Barbie

The influences that Barbie has:

*Pre-marital relations

•Exposing body

•“Barbie is an American Woman who never wants to get pregnant and have babies. She never wants to look old, and this contradicts our culture.”

Licca

- -Preferred by young Japanese children over Barbie because they found her eyes scary and “her smile too aggressively toothy.” They liked Licca’s brown hair better than Barbie’s blonde hair.
