The contractor identified by the FBI as the shooter in theNavy Yards shooting rampage in Washington DC was aBuddhist convert who may have believed his formeremployers had discriminated against him.

Friends and family of Aaron Alexis say he complained aboutthe navy and of being a victim of discrimination. Buddhist TyThairintr said Alexis thought he had never earned apromotion because of the colour of his skin.

Speaking to theAssociated Press, Mr Thairintr said he "hatedhis commander", but added that he was " a very devotedBuddhist" and often prayed at the local temple in Fort Worth

after converting to the religion.

The gunman had been suffering serious mental problems andhearing voices, according to US law officials. Sources said thatAlexis had been treated for paranoia and a sleep disordersince August. Alexis had been treated since August by thefederal Veterans Administration for his mental problems, theofficials said.

The US navy had not declared him mentally unfit however,which would have rescinded a security clearance that he hadfrom his earlier time in the Navy Reserves.

Speaking to theDaily Telegraph, Nutpisit Suthamtewakulsaid he had lived with Alexis and described him as like "hisbig brother", who had learned fluent Thai and was "a smartguy". But Alexis also allegedly spent hours playing violentvideo games in his room throughout the night.

But Alexis had clearance to the allegedly secure military areaeven though he had a history of solving grievances with thesqueeze of a trigger and had been discharged from the USNaval Reserve, it has emerged.

Investigators with the FBI and the US Navy are scrambling to

piece together a profile of Alexis, who was shot dead by policein a stand-off that came after he opened fire in a building atthe Navy Yards inside Washington DC killing 12 civiliansworkers on the base and plunging the capital of the UnitedStates into hours of anxiety. Another three victims were beingtreated for injuries.

The Mayor of Washington DC, said late Monday that there

was no indication so far that the attack, the worst on a USmilitary installation since the shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, in2009, had been the work of terrorism. But he alsoacknowledged that no one had identified a motive for theattack. Officials he entered Building 197, the principlebuilding in the complex, armed with three weapons, includingan automatic AR-25 semi-automatic.

said. We dont have any reason at this stage to suspectterrorism, but certainly it has not been ruledout. Meanwhile officials released the names of the seven ofthe victims, none of whom were military personnel. They saidthat all the families of those killed had been notified.

He had seemingly only been assigned tothe base in DC, which lies barely one and a half miles from theUS Capitol, earlier this month. It also appeared he hadbought the weapons legally in neighbouring Virginia.

Intentionally or otherwise Alexis will have given new fuel tothe national gun control debate by virtue of perpetrating thehorror within the very bounds of the countrys capital andwithin a stones throw of both Congress and the WhiteHouse. The push for new gun controls that followed theNewtown school massacre of last December quickly peteredout.
