Introduction

This document contains transcriptions of inscriptions on the surviving memorials in the Baptist Burial Ground at the bottom of Lyncombe Hill, Bath. This burial ground was for the members of the Somerset Street Baptist Church. Previously this church used a burial ground on Snow Hill. A prominent member of the church, Opie Smith, seems to have provided the ground for the new burial ground which opened circa 1809.

Background

From the volume The Baptists of Bath 1752-1851 by Kerry J Birch, 1986: “Opie Smith was a member of an influential Baptist family in Bath. His brother and he were brewers who lived at Southcot House on Lyncombe Hill. His prominence in the City is evident from a casual reference to the house as a landmark on the road to Twerton Roundhill [...] He became a deacon at Somerset Street in December 1796, and from this time seems to have developed a special gift in preaching the word of God: for on May 17th 1801,

he was called to the ministry of preaching.” According to the same volume, drawing on the chapel’s accounts, the Baptists Burial at the bottom of Lyncombe Hill was formerly land belonging to Opie Smith. In The Baptist Annual Register for 1798, 1799, 1800 and part of 1801 by John Ripon DD in its first article entitled A List of the Particular Baptist Churches in England 1798 p30, the chapel at Bath was headed by John Paul Porter and “In Mr. Porter’s congregation at Bath, public worship is well attended, and the church is happy. The deacons are Messrs. John Williams, James Evil, John Smith, and Opie Smith. About 132 members. They have conference meetings on a Monday, and prayer meetings on a Friday, which are evidently more blessed than the Monday services.” From The Baptists Magazine for 1837 Vol. XXIX (London: George Wrightman, 1837) p 4457 concerning the opening of a chapel at Bideford “The origin of this cause may be traced to visit of the late Opie Smith, Esq., of Bath, and the Rev. C. Sharp, of Bradninch, in 1813; ...” Cornwall Record Office (X/558/1) has an assignment of a lease for the Octagon chapel, Penzance dated 24 Jun 1802 and lists “Opie Smith of Bath, Somerset, esq.” as one of the parties to the agreement concerning “All that plot of ground called the Octagon meeting house, to be used as a Baptist meeting house for preaching doctrines of Calvinism”. Opie Smith is mentioned in Seamen’s Missions – Their Origin and Early Growth by Roald Kverndahl (William Carey Library, 1986) p118 in connection with George Charles Smith “Finding fellowship at nearby Somerset Street (Baptist) Chapel, he was befriended by a well-known merchant and deacon there, Opie Smith, of Westfield House. Finally in the autumn of 1804, Opie Smith, after promoting occasional preaching excursions by the

former seafarer to neighbouring villages, proposed that he should study for the ministry.” From Gentleman’s Magazine vol VI Jul-Dec 1837 p444 in the October section with the date given as ‘lately’: “At Westfield House, near Bath, in his 85th year, Opie Smith.” The Bath Chronicle of Thu 30 Jun 1836 (vol. 79 No 3861) had an announcement of Opie Smith’s death “June 25 at his residence Westfield House near this city much respected and deeply regretted by his family and a numerous circle of friends Opie Smith esq in the 85th year of his age.” Westfield House is on Bloomfield Road, Bath (the original Wells Road).

Restoration From its closure at the end of the 19th century, the fell into neglect. Over the years, the owners of the Burial Ground tried to find alternative uses for it, ranging from recreation to building development and even car parking! In 1981, Bath City Council concluded that ‘the overgrown land does not appear to be of much use to anyone’.

Figure 3 View of the ground showing the row markers

Bath Preservation Trust acquired this historic abandoned burial ground, thereby protecting it from the threat of development. By that time the entire area was covered under brambles, nettles and weeds. The centuries-old yew trees had grown to over 5m high and had totally lost their shape. Many headstones had fallen over onto the graves below. Access to the burial ground was in an equally poor state. An arched entrance in Gothic style, surmounted by an upper room for the sexton, had long since been demolished in 1970, and replaced by grey wooden gates. These were removed, revealing the ornamental cast-iron gates at the end of the forecourt; these too needed restoration. The burial ground is open as part of Bath’s Heritage Open Days, usually in September.

Burial Registers

Neither the burial registers for the Baptist chapel nor the associated gravediggers’ register of plots and occupants has survived. As a result, it is impossible to give a definitive list of those buried. In The Baptists of Bath 1752-1851 by Kerry J Birch, 1986 p162 reports “a correspondent in 1958 noted from the register that between 1807 and 1853 there were 324 children interred in the ground, and 204 of these were under 2 years of age.” Across Bath’s cemeteries, around this period, about 50% of burials were for children aged under 11. The graveyard was closed by Order in Council in 1887 although some burials occurred after this. Over the approximately 80 years of its use the number of burials would have been over 1,000.

Will of John Smith, Banker of Bath, Somerset, proved 1 Apr 1840, PROB 11/1926. Bath City Bank was founded in 1789 by Bayly, Gutch and Cross and failed in 1793. The private bank established in Union Street, Bath, in 1815 as Dore, Smith, Moger & Evans was also known as Bath City Bank. The bank briefly stopped payment in 1825. It was styled Smith & Moger in 1822, Smith, Moger & Evans in 1825, Moger & Son from 1834, Moger, Sons & Jones, subsequently George Moger & Son by 1853 and later George Moger & Sons. The bank amalgamated with Prescott, Dimsdale, Cave, Tugwell & Co Ltd (est. 1766), bankers of London, in 1891 and was eventually subsumed into the Royal Bank of Scotland. The entries in the Bath Directories for John Smith indicate that in the 1820s he was not only part of the partnership of the Bath City Bank but also associated with the Walcot and Batheaston breweries. The partners in the bank seem to have changed over the years: in 1824, Smith, Moger and Evans; in 1832 Smith and Moger and in 1841 only Moger. For burials for the Moger family, see the documentaion for Bath Abbey Cemetery.

From The Bath Chronicle of Thu 18 Oct 1900 p5: “The Rev. T. Chinese official reports are distinct to the effect that they were all murdered on July.” From The Bath Chronicle of Thu 1 Nov 1900 p3: “All hope of the escape from massacre in China of the Rev. T. J. and Mrs. Underwood, both belonging to this city, are swept aside by an announcement from the honorary secretary of the China Association, which gives the official list from missionary sources of the missionaries believed to have been killed. According to this list Mr. and Mrs. Underwood were massacred in Tai-yuen-fu on July 9.” Narrative of Massacres in Shansi, July 1900 by Robert Coventry Forsyth, reprinted from the "North China Daily News November, 1900, with an introduction by E.H. The carts were stopped, the occupants dragged out, stripped naked, both men and women, their heads cut off and bodies cut in pieces, and taken to the bank of the river and thrown down in the open, where they were shamefully abused by the rowdies of the neighbouring village of Wangshiachuang.
