Fearless Black Female Warriors Throughout History
Queen Nzinga Mbande (c. 1583 – December 17, 1663) Queen Nzinga Mbande was a highly intelligent and powerful 17th-century ruler of the Ndongo and Matamba Kingdoms (modern-day Angola). Around the turn of the 17th century, Nzinga fearlessly and cleverly fought for the freedom of her kingdoms against the Portuguese, who were colonizing the Central African coast at the time to control the trade of African human beings.
To build up her kingdom’s military might, Nzinga offered sanctuary to runaway slaves and Portuguese-trained African soldiers. She stirred up rebellion among the people still left in Ndongo, by then ruled by the Portuguese. Nzinga also formed an alliance with the Dutch against the Portuguese. However, their combined forces were not
enough to drive the Portuguese out. After retreating to Matamba again, Nzinga started to focus on developing the kingdom as a trading power and the gateway to the Central African interior. At the time of Nzinga’s death in 1661 at the age of 81, Matamba had become a powerful kingdom that managed to resist Portuguese colonization attempts for an extended period of time. Her kingdom was only integrated into Angola in the late 19th century.
Queen Mother Yaa Asantewaa (c. 1840–October 17, 1921) Yaa Asantewaa was the queen mother of the Edweso tribe of the Asante (Ashanti) in what is modern Ghana. She was an exceptionally brave fighter who, in March 1900, raised and led an army of thousands against the British colonial forces in Ghana and their efforts to subjugate the Asante and seize the Golden Stool, the Asante nation’s spiritual symbol of unity and sovereignty.
Yaa Asantewaa mobilized the Asante troops and for three months laid siege to the British fort of Kumasi. The British colonizers had to bring in several thousand troops and artillery to break the siege, exiling Queen Yaa Asantewaa and 15 of her closest advisers to the Seychelles. She lived in exile until her death in October 1921. Yaa
Asantewaa’s War, as it is presently known in Ghana, was one of the last major wars on the continent of Africa to be led by a woman. Ahosi or Mino (Dahomey Amazons)
The Dahomey Amazons or Mino was an all-female military regiment of the Fon people of the Kingdom of Dahomey in the present-day Republic of Benin. They existed from the 17th century to the end of the 19th century. While European narratives refer to the women soldiers as “Amazons,” because of their similarity to the semi-mythical Amazons of ancient Anatolia, they called themselves Ahosi (king’s wives) or Mino (our mothers) in the Fon language.
The Ahosi were extremely well trained, and inculcated with a very aggressive attitude. They were ferocious fighters with a reputation for decapitating soldiers in the middle of battle, as well as those who were unfortunate to become their captives.
Seh-Dong-Hong-Beh was one of the great leaders of the Mino. In 1851 she led an army of 6,000 women against the Egba fortress of Abeokuta. Because the Mino were armed with spears, bows and swords while the Egba had European cannons, only about 1,200 survived the extended battle.
European encroachment into West Africa gained pace during the latter half of the 19th century. In 1890, King Behanzin used his Mino fighters alongside the male soldiers to battle the French forces during the First Franco-Dahomean War. The French army lost several battles to them because of the female warriors’ skill in battle.

Historical Daughter – Sister Emily Latney
Sister Emily Latney, mother of Sister Dolores Dennie and Sister Romaine Brown,
was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 10, 1901. When her
mother died, she and her sister moved to Burke, Virginia to live with their aunt.
She married John Latney of Bowling Green, Virginia, and they became the
proud parents of two daughters, Dolores and Romaine. She attended Little
Zion Baptist Church in Burke and was a member of the Women’s Circle. After
church services moved to a new sanctuary on Zion Drive and the church was
renamed Greater Little Zion Baptist Church, she continued to attend Sunday
services while living and working in Washington, D.C. during the week. Sister
Latney died on May 13, 1966 and she is buried in the cemetery at Little Zion
Baptist Church in Burke. In memory of Sister Latney, her daughters dedicated a
room in the Fellowship Hall of Greater Little Zion Baptist Church. On the room’s
door is a plaque which reads:
LATNEY ROOM
IN MEMORY OF
Emily Latney
Sister Latney would have had over 100 years of history in Greater Little Zion
Baptist Church.
Today we recognize her daughters: Mother Dolores Dennie & Mother Romaine
(Deaconess) Brown.

Thank You! Your kind and thoughtful expression of sympathy is deeply appreciated and gratefully acknowledged.
Thank you so much for your care and concern; God will continue to bless and grant His richest blessing upon the leader and the members of this great
church. Love: On the behalf of my son Stephen Hill, Addison and Dorothy McFarland
Thank You!
To Rev. Murphy and the entire Zion family, There are no words to thank you enough for your loving kindness and the expressions of sympathy you
have shown us during the passing of Aunt Romelia. We will be forever grateful. Your prayers of intercession for comfort, strength and safe travel were answered. We drove safely to Memphis to be a part of the glorious home going service of Aunt Romelia; we cried, we laughed, we praised God and
some of us shouted. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal; love leaves a memory no one can steal. We have so many
precious, treasured memories. We pray God’s continued blessings on each of you. With our love,
Cynthia Hill, Elanese Pitts and families
Thank You! To Rev. Murphy and the entire Zion family,
To say thank you does not seem adequate, we can’t find words to thank you enough for all the expressions of love and acts of kindness you have shown us during the passing of my sister and then,
three weeks later, my father. We will be forever grateful. Your prayers for comfort and strength during this very difficult time are a blessing.
We pray God’s continued blessings on each of you. With our love,
Steve, Cynthia and Cyndel Hill
Thank You! Zion Family,
Thank you so very much for the overwhelming love and support you shared during the passing of my father. We were so appreciative of your comforting words, countless cards, prayers and hugs as we went through such a difficult time. I was especially humbled by the prayer at the altar surrounded by Pastor Murphy and the Men of Zion and that act of love will forever be remembered by me and my family. What a blessing to be surrounded by such brotherly love and support! Again, Zion Family,
THANK YOU so much! I am eternally grateful to each of you! Sincerely, Larry Pyos, Sr. and Family

CD’s & DVD’s
The following is a reminder concerning the playing of CD’s and DVD’s for programs. If you have a DVD or CD that needs to be played during a service, we ask for a two week lead-time for the DVD and one
week for the CD. This will allow time to make sure that it works, it is reviewed, and provides lead-time if it needs to be redone. It is extremely important that we abide by this process to prevent embarrassing
situations. POC: Bro. Robert Fairchild
