From Fr. Bernie:
The Solemnities of St. Patrick and St. Joseph are
celebrated on Monday and Tuesday of this week.
The Season of Lent. During Lent our Sunday Masses will
commence with the Entrance Hymn “Come Now, O Word of God” which is new to us but easy to learn. There will be no
Recessional Hymn or music; instead we will depart in silence.
The Word of God for Today: Transfiguration and
passion
Several features of the transfiguration story highlight the
glorious aspects of this event: Jesus' changed appearance, his dazzlingly white robes, the presence of Moses and
Elijah, the manifestation of Jesus' glory, the cloud of divine
presence, the heavenly voice announcing Jesus as the Son of God.
But several features also point to the passion/death/
resurrection of Jesus. The Lectionary begins the reading in the middle of verse 28. The omitted half of the verse
indicates that this event took place 'about eight days after'
Peter's confession that Jesus is 'the Messiah of God' (9:20). 'Eight days' was interpreted by the early Fathers of the
Church as a reference to the resurrection: in Jewish reckoning, Saturday (the Sabbath) is the seventh day of the
week which makes Sunday the first day of the week or, if
counting continuously, the eighth day. The expression 'the eighth day' became shorthand for the resurrection. While
this usage is not attested in the New Testament, early Christian documents moved in this direction.
Only Luke indicates what Moses and Elijah were talking about: 'his passing which he was to accomplish (Greek =
fulfil) in Jerusalem'. The use of the term 'passing' may be a reflex from the reference to Moses, the hero of the Exodus,
in which case Jesus is being identified as the long-expected 'Prophet like Moses' (Deut 18:15,18; see also Acts 3:22;
7:37). Or, because of the future reference, 'he was going
to accomplish in Jerusalem', it possibly refers to his coming death/resurrection/ascension. The immediate reference to
his 'glory' makes this very likely.
Two more details point this story to the passion. The
disciples will once again be found sleeping, next time in Gethsemane (Luke 22:45-46). And finally, the words 'this is
my Son, the Chosen One' reflect the vocabulary of the Servant of the Lord (42:1), the same Servant who 'gives his
life as an offering for sin' (Isaiah 53:10) and whose death 'shall justify many' (Isaiah 53:11). Glory and passion are
the two sides of the paschal mystery.

Plenary Council 2020. The Listening and Dialogue phase
is over. What happens now?
With the Listening and Dialogue phase now complete, the National Centre for Pastoral Research will continue the deep
listening process, conducting a qualitative and quantitative
analysis of the submissions received and, using best-practice research methods, will identify key themes that
have emerged.
Then, in May, the Bishops Commission for the Plenary
Council, the Plenary Council Executive Committee and the Facilitation Team will work together with the National
Centre for Pastoral Research to finalise the National Themes for Discernment.
Those themes will become the focus for the Listening and Discernment phase and will be the foundations for the
Plenary Council agenda.
Copies of our parish submissions are available at Masses
this Sunday.
Plenary Council Prayer
Come, Holy Spirit of Pentecost. Come, Holy Spirit of the great South Land.
O God, bless and unite all your people in Australia and guide us on the pilgrim way of the Plenary Council.
Give us the grace to see your face in one another
and to recognise Jesus, our companion on the road. Give us the courage to tell our stories
and to speak boldly of your truth. Give us ears to listen humbly to each other
and a discerning heart to hear what you are saying.
Lead your Church into a hope-filled future, that we may live the joy of the Gospel.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, bread for the journey from age to age.
Amen.
The Parish Pastoral Council meets this week on
Thursday March 21 after the 6.30pm Banyo Mass.
Harmony Day is held every year on 21 March. The Day
coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. We thank God for the
rich diversity of nations and cultures that contribute to the
faith life of our parish family.
Every Blessing,
Fr Bernie

The Holy Father’s Intentions for March Evangelization:
That Christian communities, especially those who are persecuted, feel that they are close to Christ
and have their rights respected.
The month of March is dedicated to Saint Joseph.
Stewardship “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession.” (Genesis 15:7) Just as the Lord gave Abraham, Moses and the Israelites a land to possess, He has also given each of us a home.
Whether your home is grand or humble, it is a gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in
gratitude for the home God gave him. How do you show your gratitude to God for the home He has given you? Do
you make a sacrifice of any kind? Do you return any of your
finances to God, investing equally in your eternal home just as you invest in your earthly home?
A Vocation View
A VOCATION VIEW: After the transfiguration, Peter, John and James wanted to stay up the
mountain. But Jesus said, "Move," with the
knowledge that ships are safe in harbours, but not meant to stay in harbours.

Do We Pray or Escape?
It happens pretty regularly at the end of powerful youth group gatherings or retreats: No one wants to leave. So many times young people have told the leader how sad they feel about having to go back to the real world. Peter feels the same way in this week’s Gospel. The Transfiguration baffles many people. But just think of it this way: Jesus and his closest friends go up a mountain and pray, and during their prayer they realise the importance of Jesus and his mission. They connect his mission to historic religious leaders like Moses and Elijah. They feel God’s presence. Peter wants to stay. But maybe the most important part of the story is the end. They go back down the mountain and head toward Jerusalem, where their insights will change how they live in the real world. We know how the story ends. Here’s the lesson for us. Our prayer life isn’t for us. It is for our journey in the world, where God calls us to live the Reign’s values. That doesn’t mean prayer shouldn’t comfort us when we struggle with personal problems. It should. But youth-group meetings, retreats, and personal quiet time with Jesus must also turn our focus toward friends and family who need our support, poor people who need our compassion, and society’s injustices that need our activism. Our prayer life should help us be Christ’s presence to all people – from the people in our schools and local community to the people in faraway lands. If our prayer life doesn’t do this, then prayer is little more than an escape from reality. Lent is a good time to evaluate your prayer and worship life. Is it an escape or a fuelling station for your journey as a disciple?
