Brain Builder Fact Many people believe having a superior intelligence or ability is the key to success. However, research shows that an overemphasis on intellect or talent and the suggestion that these traits are innate or fixed, leaves people vulnerable to failure, fearful of challenge and unmotivated to learn. Teaching children to have a growth mindset with a focus on process, rather than on intelligence or talent, produces high achievers in school and life. Adults can foster a growth mindset in children by praising them for their persistence or strategies rather than for their intelligence, by sharing stories of success that emphasise hard work and a love of learning and by teaching them how their brain is a learning machine. Road Safety WeekIn Week 3 this term we will be holding a special week dedicated to road and passenger safety. Each year level has an exciting week of activities planned to reiterate important road safety messages. Please keep a watch on your child’s class blog for further information and a flyer highlighting road safety of Sunshine Avenue.

Next Wednesday 14 October, Stage 3 students, staff and parents will be attending the 2015 Small Scholars Seminar, to be held in the Lecture Theatre at the Mahers Lane campus.

There are a number of enthusiastic Year 5 students who nominated themselves to be a part of the Small Scholars program for 2015. These students have worked tirelessly over the last term to research and write a ‘TED-style’ talk on a topic they feel passionate about. With their chosen topics hope to spark conversation and ultimately change the attitudes and thinking of their peers.

I am sure the audience will be informed, inspired and motivated by these young scholars, who are most eager to share their thoughts, passions and ideas about the world.

If you would like to share and watch some TED talks by impressive young people with your children, visit http://blog.ted.com/9-talks-by-impressive-kids/.

These talks are fun, informative and captivating.

Sports NewsFUN Swimming Carnival – Kindergarten to Year 2Lindisfarne’s annual FUN Swimming Carnival for all students in Kindergarten to Year 2 will be held on Thursday 15 October at Kingscliff Pool. Parents, please wear your swimmers and jump in too. We would love some parent helpers in each lane of the pool all day to help make our youngest students feel comfortable. Please remember this is a FUN Carnival so there won’t be any timekeeping, ribbons or points, just fun for all involved. A rash shirt is compulsory for all students for this event.

NCIS Basketball ChampionshipsThe NCIS Basketball Championships are being held in Coffs Harbour on Tuesday 3 November. We will be taking one boys and one girls team from Stage 3. If your child is interested in attending, please have them email Jodie Arnold on [email protected] as soon as possible. Should you wish to coach/manage a team on the day please contact Jodie Arnold via email.

Sports PresentationOur annual Sports Presentation Assembly is on Tuesday 10

November at 10:55am. More details will be advised in the coming weeks.

Early Learning Centre

Toy Catalogue FundraiserAt the end of Term 3 all Preschool families should have received toy catalogues. There are a range of great toys, activities and games available in these catalogues. For every item that is sold the company gives 25% back to the Preschool for the purchase of equipment. We would love to increase our Lego supply, so your support in helping us do this is greatly appreciated.

Term 4This term, the Preschool Possum and Koala classes will continue to do group activities in preparation for Kindergarten. A big thank you to the parents who give their time to help out in the classrooms - it is appreciated by the teachers and the students.

As the weather is heating up the children will be doing lots of water play, including using the hoses, water troughs and the pond area, so we often have a lot of wet clothes. Please ensure your child has a spare set of clothes in their bag

(including underwear). If you have any spare clothes your child has grown out of they would be very much

appreciated as our supplies are running low.

Book BagsPreschool Possum and Koala students will be

bringing home a book bag each week. Please see the detailed information that was sent

home at the end of Term 3. Students will not be issued with a book until the

contract sheet has been signed and returned.
