Banksy Inspired StencilsFIMA with Mrs. Mendola
STEP #1: Find an Image of a Wall● Go onto Google and search for an image of a wall
○ Be sure there are no watermarks or copyright logos○ High Quality Image
■ IMAGES > TOOL > SIZE > LARGE
● Copy the image
● Open a new 11” X 8.5” document in Adobe Photoshop● Paste the image on the artboard
○ Transform (CTRL T) the image if needed ■ Hold SHIFT and click and drag from a CORNER
** If the image doesn’t fit right on your board, CROP the extra space OR find a new wall image **
Step #2: Think of a topic● Come up with a topic that you can create a visual for
○ Political Controversy ○ Social Controversy○ Economic Controversy ○ Equality Controversy ○ Artistic Controversy
● Find the images you can use to express your story ○ You may need to take multiple images from online and create a collage, piecing them together
on a separate document if you cannot find something that works
STEP #3: Remove the background ● Eyeball off all layers ● Copy & Paste the new image you are adding to the wall ● Transform the size of the image (CTRL T)
○ Click and Drag from the Corner while holding SHIFT
● Remove the background NEATLY ○ Magic Wand Tool○ Quick Selection Tool○ Lasso Tool
● Repeat this step for ALL of your images
*** You may want to LABEL your layers to keep you organized
STEP #4: Editing your images ● Click on the layer of the image
you want to edit ● Click on IMAGE
○ ADJUSTMENTS ■ Brightness/contrast ■ Black & White
○ POSTERIZE ■ Choose 2 - 4 levels

● Change the Opacity of the image so your wall is showing through your image a bit
● Change the style of the layer ○ Play with all the choices to see which works the
best
STEP #4: Editing your images Continued - Right click on the layer of the image to get more editing options
- Play with any of the settings on this screen until you get the desired look you are seeking
- Usually the BLEND options work the best to make it look like the image is really on the wall
- Hold down the ALT key on the keyboard and you can separate the ticks for more accurate blends
STEP #5: Rearrange Layers● Rearrange your layers to make the image you want
○ Click and drag the layers
● Remember we want our Banksy stencil to look like someone took a picture of it off the street
○ You can crop images○ Have things run off the page ○ Use various styles○ Add SOME text
● Once you have your desired look, save it as a PSD and JPEG file ○ Upload to your portfolio!
