WHAT IS A BANKSMAN?
Banksman - Competent person positioned so that he has an unrestricted view of the load and the vehicle operator, to give load-manoeuvring instructions to the pertinent vehicle driver
e.g.. crane driver via hand signals or radio.

DUTIES OF BANKSMAN
Directs site traffic on a construction site.
Understand the risks involved with directing off highway traffic and be able to carry out the role of vehicle banksman with confidence
Use a clear, agreed system of signaling
Be visible to drivers at all times.
Stand in a safe position, from which to guide the reversing vehicle without being in its way.
Wear high visibility clothing, and ensure that signals are clearly seen.

IMPORTANCE OF USING A BANKSMAN
Workplace transport is used in a great variety of situations but sadly remains the second biggest cause of fatal injury in the workplace.
Workplace transport is one of the most "multi-factorial" risk control issues duty holders have to cope with. Adequately controlling the risks, especially the vehicle movement risks, depends on duty-holders establishing and sustaining control over a wide range of matters
A banksman should be used where necessary, both to keep the reversing area free of pedestrians and to guide drivers.

ASSOCIATED RISKS
Using banksmen to control reversing operations can put the Banksman in the potential danger area of a reversing vehicle. Every year banksmen suffer serious and fatal injuries whilst at work.
If you do use banksmen, make sure they are trained to carry out their duties safely. There must be a safe system of work that ensures the Banksman and driver are using standard signals, so that they are easily understood, and that the driver knows to stop the vehicle immediately if the Banksman disappears from view.
PRECAUTIONS
10
What precautions do I need to take when vehicles have to reverse on the site?????????
USING A BANKSMAN
11
a properly trained banksman can both
keep the reversing area free of pedestrians
as well as guiding drivers through safe
maneuvers.
RESTRICTING VEHICLE REVERSING
12
where it cannot be avoided altogether, you should consider places where reversing can be carried out safely.
You should also ensure that the distance over which vehicles have to reverse is minimized.
ISOLATE PEOPLE FROM REVERSING VEHICLES
13
you need to make clear areas where
reversing is permitted, and that your
system of work prevents the need for
pedestrians to enter these ‘danger areas’
unnecessarily.
ESTABLISHING DEMARCATION LINES
14
Should be clearly seen by both driver and pedestrians.
Consideration should be given to creating vehicle only areas and preventing workers or the public entering these zones through physical barriers and warning signs.
SIGNALLING SYSTEM
15
There needs to be a clear and agreed system of signaling and will need to be visible to drivers at all times.
The position where the banksman stands is crucial, and should be in a safe position where there is no chance of accidental impact.
FITTING OF BACKUP ALARMS
16
To alert, or with a detection device to warn
the driver of an obstruction or apply the
brakes automatically.
HAND SIGNALS
17
HOIST
With vertical forefinger pointing up. move hand small horizontal circle
18
LOWER
With arm extended downward. Forefinger pointing down. Move hand in small horizontal circle
19
USE MAIN HOIST
Tap first on head. Then use regular signals
20
USE WHIPELINE
Tap elbow with one hand.
use regular signals
21
RAISE BOOM
Arm extended. Finger closed. thumb pointing upward
22
LOWER BOOM
Arm extended, finger closed, thumb pointing downwards
23
MOVE SLOWLY
Use one hand to give any motion signal and place other hand motionless in front of hand giving the motion signal
24
RAISE THE BOOM AND LOWER THE LOAD
Arm extended finger closed, thumb pointing upward. Other arm bent slightly with forefinger punting down and rotate hand in horizontal circles
25
LOWER THE BOOM AND RAISE THE LOAD
Arm extended finger closed, thumb pointing downward. Other arm bent slightly with forefinger vertical forefinger punting upwards and rotate hand in horizontal circles
26
BRIDGE TRAVEL
Arm extended forward. Hand open and slightly raised, make pushing motion in direction of travel
27
TROLLEY TRAVEL
Palm up. Finger closed. thumb punting in direction of motion. Jerk hand horizontally
28
STOP
Both arms outstretching at the sides horizontally, finger outstretched
29
MULTIPLE TROLLEYS
Hold up one finger for block marked “1” and two finger for block marked “2” .
