From the CEO:-

I am very pleased to report that Banksia’s new website was launched in March. You’ll notice a significant difference when you visit it (www.banksiavillage.com.au), with a much clearer layout, improved navigation through the site, and additional information and services. I would welcome any feedback or suggestions you might have about the new site. My thanks again to all of you who have participated in this exciting project.

Over time we will be continuing to develop the site. This will include a secure Members’ area for Residents where you will be able to log in to access a range of information, a calendar for events and activities at Waratah and Grevillea Centres, and more. I look forward to sharing further details with you about this area of the website soon.

Planning is progressing for the Stage 4 development, with the next phase focused on additional independent retirement villas. In conjunction with this, management is also reviewing the Village common centres and how they could be best utilised to meet current and future needs. I look forward to sharing more details with you over the next few months as our planning progresses.

Works on the Memorial Pavers commemorative wall will commence in early April. Management is working with the Residents’ Committee to confirm the proposed location of each of the pavers within the constructed wall, and ensure that all pavers donated have been included.

Finally, I’m very pleased to advise that we have completed recruitment for our new Maintenance Manager, with Daryl Sturgess joining the team in this role on 10 April. Daryl brings a wealth of experience to the team, and has actually worked with Banksia previously in his former role with Project Coordination, the company which managed the Banksia Lodge extension project. We look forward to welcoming Daryl to the team.

There have been some other changes in our Maintenance team. Most of you will be aware that Brendan is leaving Banksia to pursue other career opportunities. Brendan has made an outstanding contribution during his time with Banksia and will be greatly missed. We wish Brendan and his wife all the very best in their new ventures. And while it is disappointing to have to farewell Brendan, we are very pleased to welcome Tristan to the team on a permanent basis. With best wishes Graham Wise Chief Executive Officer

Men’s Shed:

Recently, the management of the

Lodge generously donated a display

cabinet to the Men’s Shed.

It is an opportunity to display the

many and varied crafted goods that

the men and ladies from the Lodge

and Village have made. The

display cabinet is located in the

Lodge adjacent to the main

entrance.

All items on display are for sale and

the monies go to support the “Men’s

Shed”.

You will be surprised by what you see and who knows, there could be

something you may need or a gift for someone special.

The Men’s Shed meets on the third Thursday of the month at 4.00 pm in

the Waratah Centre and an invitation is extended to come along and join

in the social activities. We have regular BBQ’s and of course, the big

BBQ in November.

If you have any queries, please contact the president Grant Young (villa

166) of the secretary, Gordon Wheatley (villa 48)

Gordon Wheatley

Photo includes the arty and crafty Richard McLean, to give an idea of the

size of the display case. He is one of our more active members and is

dressed for action in the Shed.

St Patricks Day Luncheon:- Was enlivened in no small way, by Pat Harrison’s generous donation of sufficient quantity of his excellent home brewed stout. Pat is pictured at the bar, along with Jacqueline and Noelene. For many years now, Pat has been providing the stout for St Pat’s day. Later in the afternoon, he addressed the diners, giving us an outline of the work involved in the brewing process.

The caterers, Shane Cooper and Julie.

With them are our two

serving ladies, Judy and Phyllis, without whom none of these functions would be

the success that they are.

In Your Garden:-

Hello folks! Welcome to the middle of autumn, although it certainly doesn’t feel like it at the moment with this warm summer like weather. We have had plenty of rain since my last report and everything is booming, the grass is green again, especially the weeds unfortunately! April brings us well into autumn, and the days are now getting shorter. While the soil is still warm, it’s a good time to plant trees, shrubs and herbs as their roots will have a chance to take hold before winter. Things to do this month include:-

Plant climbers, annuals and perennials

Gather and compost autumn leaves

Prune tall shrubs to reduce their height to better resist winter winds

Continue planting garlic, strawberry runners and shallot bulbs

Empty compost bins into the garden to prepare for next season

Give citrus trees their last feed before winter

Keep bulbs in the fridge ready for winter planting There are plenty of winter vegetables to be planted this month such as:-

Beetroot, broad beans, carrots, garlic, lettuce, pak choy, parsley, peas, silverbeet , spinach, snow peas, swede, turnips and zucchini

So let’s look forward to the cooler days and nights, perfect gardening weather!

Anzac Day This year, Brian Baker has arranged a brief Anzac Day Memorial Service. It will be held on the Village Green in front of the flag pole at the Grevillia Centre at 11am on Anzac Day. (April 25th) He has received approval for this ceremony from the Returned Services League. The purpose is to enable those residents unable to make it to one of the ceremonies at Tomakin, Moruya or Batemans Bay to attend a service here in the Village. We expect to do this annually in future. It is hoped to have a good turn out of residents who may afterwards enjoy our Anzac Day luncheon in the nearby Grevillia Centre.

The Residents Committee:- Gordon Wheatley (Chairman), Rex Williams (Secretary) Joe Pirronello, Bill Reid, David Bourke, Victoria Fleming, Glennah Castle and Barbara

Usher. The function of this committee is to meet regularly, discuss issues affecting residents and make recommendations to management. If you are not satisfied with a response to a request for service or assistance, you should first approach the responsible staff member or supervisor for explanation or rectification of the issue. If the matter remains unresolved after doing this, then it may be referred to the Residents Committee for attention.

Social Committee Report:-

Once again, the month has flown by and maybe due to all the functions and activities offered at Banksia.

We started off March with another well organised David and Dianne three course dinner at Moruya Bowling Club. It was well attended as usual (you have to be quick to write your name on the list at Waratah) and enjoyed by all.

We have been spoilt this month by having two sessions on different types of Floral Arrangements with Joy Grace and Judy Fergie. It is amazing what one can learn to do with only a few or many flowers. During the last session we had a workshop which produced many beautiful arrangements to display. As an added bonus participants took their displays home. We thank both Joy and Judy for their talent and time, and all who attended enjoyed and appreciated the lessons. We cannot forget to thank Jeff Grace who supplied the flowers for us to use.

The Happy Hours continue to be well attended and enjoyed by everyone especially those people who win the raffle. They are a casual and informal evening and an ideal opportunity for newcomers to meet other residents.

Our St. Patrick’s Day luncheon was a huge success due to a delicious menu, good company and Pat Harrison’s stout. Pat gave us an insight on how he brews his stout which he kindly donates and has done for many years. A thankyou gift in appreciation for his generosity was presented by Bev Burnes. The Grevillea Centre wall decorations (done by Barbara Usher and helpers, thankyou) and the tables were a sea of green.

This months lunch out was at the Vulcan Street Café which was a pleasant lunch enjoyed by those who attended.

The monthly Sunday BYO BBQ is always a casual and friendly coming together with healthy salads and unhealthy desserts supplied by those who attend.

Lastly, the Movie night at the Waratah Centre, come along, bring your nibblies and refreshments and enjoy a relaxing evening.

Don’t forget to keep referring to your Fridge List so you don’t miss out on anything.

Thank you to everyone who have helped with any of the above activities during

this month.

Daylight Saving

Sunday 2nd April is the end of Daylight Saving when we can return to Eastern Standard time at 3.00 am on that day. Before you go to bed on Saturday 1st April, put your clocks back by one hour and enjoy one hour extra in bed that night.

Window Cleaning

There appears to be some confusion about the current scope of works for window cleaning. Please note that only external windows are cleaned by the contractor. Residents will have the opportunity to consider the additional cost to include cleaning of tracks and internal windows with the 2017/2018 recurrent charges budget.

Previously some residents have paid the window cleaners directly to have internal windows cleaned. Due to the number of requests the cleaners have received for internal windows, they are unable to provide this service at the same time as external windows without impacting the schedule. Management will need to have further discussions with residents as to how these works can be coordinated.

Window cleaning will not take place if rain is forecast. If residents are unsure whether cleaning will take place on the day, please contact reception for an update. Unfortunately the recent wet weather has had a significant impact on the schedule and most villas have had to be re-scheduled.

If any residents have any concerns or questions regarding the window cleaning service please contact the administration office or speak to the maintenance staff member who will be liaising with residents on the day of your scheduled clean.

Thank you for your cooperation.
