There are 3 main credit unions in Kelowna.
•Canadian banks are nationwide. •Best for convenience – especially when travelling.•Better online services & technology support.•Generally interest rates are lower than a credit union.•Fees are typically higher than a credit union.

If inflation is too high, there is often high unemployment, high interest rates, & money loses its buying power.
• The bank influences the supply of money circulating in the economy. Keeps inflation low & stable.
• The bank oversees the financial institutions within Canada.
Canada’s banking system is considered one of the safest banking systems in the world.
• The bank designs, issues, & distributes Canada’s bank notes.
• It is the bank for the Government of Canada, managing its public debt & foreign exchange reserves.

Banks & credit unions offer a variety of different accounts for customers depending on their needs.
• A chequing account is best for day‐to‐day banking and allows for many transactions. Very low interest is earned.
BANK ACCOUNTS:
• A saving account encourages customers to save by offering slightly higher interest rates. The numbers of transactions are generally limited.
BANK ACCOUNTS:
• A TSFA account allows customers to save without having to pay income tax on the earnings.
BANK ACCOUNTS:
• A RESP account is a savings account dedicated to a child’s post secondary education. Money can grow tax‐free & the government will match 20% of contributions to a max. of $7,200/child.

• Most student accounts are free! Otherwise, a monthly fee is charged to your account. If you exceed the transaction limits, more fees are charged.
• Each transaction or service fee is charged immediately .
BANK FEES:
Transactions include:• taking money out of an ATM machine;• using an ATM from another bank;• using a debit card;• On‐line bill payment;• visiting a teller;• payroll deposit;• e‐transfer.
BANK TRANSACTIONS:
• If you overdraw your account, meaning that you spend more than you have in your account, you may be charged an overdraft fee.
• Overdraft protection on an account is another form of a feea bank can charge you for.

• Writing a cheque may be becoming an outdated daily banking practice, but sometimes it is needed to set up an online payment account. Or, perhaps to give money to another person.
• Ordering cheques for your account is another cost the bank can charge you for.
CHEQUES:
• You may receive a cheque from your job, or as a gift.
• Only sign the back of a cheque when cashing or depositing into your account. A cheque that has been signed (endorsed) can be deposited by another person.
• Having a unique & consistent signature is a good way to avoid fraudulent activity.
