Code: W101 Focus Audience: KS2 teachers and upper KS1 teachers Name: James Baker School: Regents, Pattaya Details: Research has shown that cooperative learning techniques can be extremely

effective teaching tools. They: - Promote student learning and academic achievement - Enhance student satisfaction with their learning experience - Help students develop skills in oral communication - Develop students' social skills - Promote student self-esteem - Help to promote positive race relations - Every child develops responsibility

The use of Cooperative learning structures is a highly effective teaching strategy.

The use of specific sentence types is also a highly effective and child friendly way to improve children’s writing especially if used in the context of a whole school approach.

The workshop will be fun, practical and offer clear and concise ideas for improving literacy in the classroom/year group/key stage/whole school.

Teachers will learn how to teach specific sentence types and the value in doing this as a whole school. We will do this in the context of 4 or 5 cooperative learning structures.

Teaching method and activities in Chinese Class

Code: W104 Focus Audience: Middle school and High School (MYP/DP) Name: Jing Zhi School: Concordian International School Details: This workshop is for teachers who are teaching Chinese Language B in Middle and

high school, who want to discuss and get more teaching methods and activities for the Chinese class. Since Chinese teachers gained the knowledge through Chinese traditional ways, sometimes we refer to the heavy reliance of textbooks, passive learning with an emphasis on grammar, teacher-centred is always what happens in the class, even when we consider when students don't learn what the teacher tells them, they learn what they understand. We have found that Modern Chinese language teaching is too traditional and lacks vitality, so most of us thirst for appropriate methods and activities for students, to make a student-centred class.

Director of Mandarin Studies for Teaching Staff in Harbin China, 10years

The Singing Classroom

Code: W111 Focus Audience: Key stage 1, Teachers, TA’s EAL, support staff. Name: James Gardiner School: Shrewsbury International School Details: The focus of the session is to enhance learning through simple songs or chants

which relate directly to the curriculum; mainly literacy and topic work. Using well-known children’s songs and tunes, and or changing the lyrics to well known songs or tunes we aim to create songs and also look at existing ones which tie in with the vocabulary needed to access, or enhance particular parts of the curriculum. Moving on from this, using these songs not only in the classroom on a day-to-day, week-to-week basis, but also highlighting how to build this into a bank of songs which can also be used in assemblies/performances which demonstrates a clear indication of what the children have been learning. Attendees should leave this session with more confidence to trial these types of activities and this session should help attendees develop more confidence to do this. The ideas provided should help teachers with very limited to advanced musical skills. This is easily utilized within the classroom using a guitar, piano or just by simply beating a rhythm on a drum. I would like the opportunity to share my experiences in assisting the existing curriculum using music and also to utilize the experiences of attendees to contribute to this too. I have found this to be very successful in helping the children to remember vocabulary and also to help the students to understand the use of the language; making it lively, fun and exciting. This type of learning is designed to assist the day-to-day learning in an international environment and has shown particular benefits to the second language learners I have taught.

Other Information: James is currently in his tenth year of teaching at Shrewsbury International School. The Literature Essay: Poetry

Code: W115 Focus Audience: Secondary English and interested teachers Name: Sharon Evangelista School: Garden International School, Bangkok Details: Outline of workshop content: An approach to the Literature Essay: poetry/prose

Session Aim: To complete a PowerPoint display on the two poems, by the Rossetti siblings, "A Birthday," by Christina and "The Woodspurge," Dante Gabriel. I will partially prepare this before the session. (Don't worry if you have no background with these poems.) - Whole-of-group involvement in ‘Poetry Readings’, each group doing an agreed

shared reading (perhaps in pairs). - In groups, after agreeing to some selected phrases from the poems, participants

will write small paragraphs around those phrases that will later be used to fill the gaps in the PowerPoint display. The writing process will be aided by the tried-and-true acronym of PEEL(Point-Evidence-Explain-Link), to which I add a small 'e'(as in the mathematics 'to the power of'), which denotes the ‘writer's effect' to extend the ‘explain’, giving that often needed attention to the literary device. Prose – Reader’s theatre approach to a shared reading. Sharing of various templates, acronym and charts used for teaching literary writing. Feel welcome to bring yours to share.I would like to get other English teachers' feedback on my ideas and get some of their ideas in return.

Other Information: Sharon has been teaching English at the Secondary level since January 2003, in Australia and Thailand. This is her fourth year teaching the IGCSE. As the sole Secondary English teacher at her small but growing School, she teaches English from Years 7 to 11. She taught academic writing to adult university entrants before graduating as a Secondary Teacher in 2002, focusing on the Social Sciences and Adult Learning. With the then shortage of English teachers in the country of Australia, her first position also required her to teach English. Equipped with a love of literature, she relished the opportunity and undertook ongoing professional development in the Senior English Syllabus while teaching English to Years 11 and 12 in rural Australia. In addition to classroom teaching, she has been an English faculty leader and regularly conduct a variety of after school activities. These include: English learning, debate clubs, readers' theatre and drama clubs. In Bangkok, her central focus has been facilitating learning for my IGCSE students and she feels she is making positive progress with the literature essay. She has adapted and designed various acronyms, templates and methods for adolescent learning of this complex and relatively academic process.

The AIM: An active and inspiring new way to teach additional languages

Code: W130 Focus Audience: Teachers at all levels teaching learners in second language English, Spanish, French and Mandarin

Name: Sarah Aikman School: KIS International School Details: The AIM is a research-based programme through which students rapidly learn a

second language using story, action, drama and music. It provides a relevant, meaningful and fun framework in order to build oral fluency in learners as well a contextualised understanding of grammar and syntax. Teachers will view sample situations of teachers using the AIM and be able to learn the technique first hand. Many sample resources will be provided for teachers of ESL/EAL, SSL, FSL and Mandarin in order to get a feel for what is available to them through AIM. This will be an active workshop where all teachers' participation is welcomed.

Other Information: Sarah started her teaching career as a French as a Second Language teacher in an inner city school in Ottawa, Canada. The challenge was great with most students struggling, completely uninterested and/or resentful about having to learn French. But when she started using the AIM, she saw their fluency increase immediately and with it their enthusiasm and engagement. Now teaching in Thailand, she has her regular kindergarten class but also offers French classes for after school programming because she loves seeing how students actively engage and get excited about learning French through the AIM.
