First things firsthere is what is expected of you in the Kettering Middle School Band Program:

    Ms. Cabe- Director

You will be assigned a grade based on FOUR areas:1. 50% Performance (students receive a total of 10 pts. per day for class performance and preparedness for

class). You must have your instrument every day, unless Ms. Cabe states otherwise. You must keep your

instrument in working condition!!! Reeds must not be cracked or chipped and must be at least a 2

strength. Valves must not stick, they need to be oiled every day. Drummers are required to have drums

sticks, timpani mallets, bell mallets in a stick bag. Orchestra students must have rosin and a chin restfor violin and viola or a rock stop for cello or bass. Students using school instruments are responsible for

those instruments. Any additional damage done to that instrument, the students parents are responsible for the

repair. If you have any reason that you cannot play your instrument that day you must have a written excuse to

not be penalized for not performing.

Class Performance- all music and material assigned must be performed with accuracy. The rubric for

    class performance is:

10- All assigned music is performed accurately with correct posture on their own supplies.

8- All assigned music is performed accurately with a few mistakes with correct posture on their

    supplies.

6- All assigned music is performed mostly correct with correct posture on their own supplies

4- All assigned music is performed mostly correct with correct posture, but the student does not have

    all

    of their supplies.

2- Music is performed with a great deal of mistakes or poor tone

    0- Unable to perform

Concert Performance- all concerts and after school concert rehearsals are MANDATORY. Prince

Georges Countys policy is that students not attending their concert will receive a failing grade for the

concert. Performances are the end product of the entire bands work over a period of time. When you are not at

a performance, you are not showing that you have worked for the end result which is the band with all of its

members making music together. If you have an emergency and cannot be at the concert a written excuse

must be given to Ms. Cabe within 24 hours of the concert. Anyone not bringing in a note will be considered as

skipping a concert and the concert grade will be zero. Just as an academic teacher would expect that a missed

exam be made up, I also expect for an excused missed concert to be made up. This can be made up by writing

a three page, hand written report on a mutually agreed upon subject.Concert Uniform

Black- Pants, jeans, or skirtsWhite (completely white)- shirt, sweater, or turtle neck

Shoes- blackVest- that will be provided by the school- they are worth approximately $30.00,

students sign out a vest and will be responsible for that vestuntil they turn it back in the next morning to Ms. Cabe.

    2. 20 % Practice charts (10 pts per week). I require that you keep a record of how much time you practice eachday (this is your homework). You must practice at least 3 times a week which totals no less than 2 hours of

practice. Practice charts must be turned in every week with a parent signature. You can make your own or get

a form from Ms. Cabes office door.

    3. 30% Assignments & Playing tests (5-10 pts per assignment/playing test). Students will be assessed on theirinformation that they have gained throughout the school year by completing assignments and performance

    assessments (playing tests).

Rehearsal ProceduresRehearsal time is valuable and every moment must be used for actual rehearsal purposes. The following regulations are

used in all fine musical organizations. They are the foundation of our rehearsal procedure.

You will walk into the band room and quickly and quietly get seated and begin to warm-up your instrumentsby lip/arm exercises, playing long tones, scales, and examples from your textbook- Standards of Excellence. Arrange your music to the order on the board (ALWAYS HAVE A PENCIL- NOT PEN- AT EVERY

    REHEARSAL).

Have any accessories that you might need (extra reeds, mutes, percussion equipment, etc.) easily assessable. All percussionists, after getting all the equipment required for all of the pieces, will practice rudiments on the

    table working slow to fast.

When I step to the directors stand, all talking should stop at once. Your full attention should be given to me,and nothing be allowed to distract you. Being inattentive will only lower your grade. Speaking is allowed only

when I am not near the stand.

No eating, drinking, or chewing anything is allowed at any time. If you have a written excuse for not having your instrument, you must do the fingerings and breathing just as if

you were playing. Percussionists not assigned to a part in a particular piece of music must practice in the air as if they were

    performing on the actual instruments.

If you do not bring your instrument, music, or supplies to the band room before homeroom, then you mustcarry it with you. I will not let you to go your locker and you will receive a zero for that rehearsal.

If your instrument requires a reed, you must have at least two playable reeds at all times. No reed equals a zerofor that rehearsal. If you have a valved instrument, you must have your valves oiled before rehearsal starts.

Points will be deducted if you cannot perform during the rehearsal due to sticky valves.

Only Percussionists may handle/play the percussion instruments. All percussion instruments must be returnedto their designated areas at the end of each rehearsal.

*REFUSAL TO COMPLY WITH THE ABOVE GUIDELINES WILL RESULT IN A LOWERED BANDGRADE!

    Theory

It is helpful for all musicians to know the piano keyboard. It helps you see how notes relate

to each other. The musical alphabet is A B C D E F G and then starts over again.

    Rhythm

Rhythm is the organization of sound in time

Time signature tells you how many beats are in a measure and what kind of note

    gets one beat.

    4$

For these exercises the time signature will be 4$:

    A whole note/ rest gets 4 beats A half note/ rest gets 2 beats

    Notes 1 = 4 2 = 21234 12

    Rests ! = 4 @ = 2

    Bar line

PLACE THE BAR LINES AND THE END LINE IN THE FOLLOWING EXERCISE:

    2. 4$2 2 1 @ 2 ! 1 2 2 1

Top number (4) means 4 beats in a measure

Bottom number (4) means a quarter note (4) gets one beat,if the bottom number was a 2, it would mean a half note (2)would get one beat,if the bottom number was an 8, it would mean an eighth note

    (8) would get one beat

    Reading Music

T Treble clef- These are the higher pitches in band music. When a note is on a line

which corresponds to a note on a staff (5 lines make up a staff where notes are placed todescribe their pitch)

we use the pneumonic device of:

    Every Good Boy Does Fine

It doesnt matter if the note is shaded in or if the line goes up or down, look

only at the circular part of the note.

Do Now: Complete the following exercises:

    T Every Good BoyDoes Fine

    E G B D

    Key Signatures

Key signatures are found usually at the beginning of a piece of music and tells you what notes

are flat or sharp. Sometimes in the music the key signature will change, so watch out for any

changes. It is important that you follow the key signature, because if you dont you wont be

    playing the correct notes and

    When you see:

you will destroy the chord (more than one pitch played

togetherharmony) structure and make the entire group sound badso be careful!!

    The order of flats are B, E, A, D, G, C, F

Do now: List which notes are flat in the follow key signatures:

The order of Sharps is the exact opposite of the flats. The order for sharps is

    F, C, G, D, A, E, B

Do now: List which notes are sharp in the follow key signatures:

3 flats- they would be Bb, Eb and Ab in order. That means all Bs, Es, and As are

flat regardless if they are high or low

    Enharmonic Equivalents

    - notes that are the same fingering, but have different

    names.

Flat means to LOWER by step, Sharp means to RAISE by step

It is easiest way to figure out enharmonic equivalents is by looking at a

keyboard. The black keys can have two different names:

;;;;;;;;Where there is no black key the enharmonic equivalents are listed above.

Do now: List the enharmonic equivalent to the note :

    A# = ______ D# = _______ F# = ______

    Db = ______ Gb = _______ Ab = ______

    C# = ______ Eb = _______ Bb = ______

    E# = ______ Cb = _______

    C#/Db D#/Eb F#/Gb G#/Ab A#/Bb

    E#/F

    Now lets get playing:

A pentatonic scale has 5 notes, like a pentagon has 5 sides; penta means 5

Long tones- to develop a good tone, long tones are very important. You must try

and center the tone and hold it without wavering. Check with a tuner to see if

you can hold it out properly. Yes, long tones are boring but with a tuner, it

    makes it more interesting.

Lip Slurs- to slur from one note to another without breaks and cracks will help

to develop you embouchure (the muscles that control your mouth)

Technique- moving your fingers quickly will help to develop speed especially for

    difficult sections of music.

Start slow work for speed. If you make a mistake slow down and try again.
