more students are working full-time whiletaking classes; yet reportedly most uni-versities’ policies do not support suchwork-study balance.

More career-focused – today’s studentsview university as a hurdle required formeaningful employment or career-prepa-ration rather than exploration about theworld and differing perspectives.Universities are responding with career-specialized programs; however studentsgraduate into a society where having auniversity degree is now commonplaceand companies no longer compete for newgraduates.

More connections – as today’s studentscontinue regular contact with parents, andhave multiple mentors, learning networks,and other social supports. they seek en-gagement in their own learning process,international experiences, and volunteering.

More technology – digital media, andonline access to information have beenubiquitous for much of the lives of today’s18-year-old students, who in the fall of

2010 were born in 1992. However, theselearners are less advanced in technologiessupporting deeper understanding such asconcept mapping software, online journalsand digital books than technologies appropriate for consuming informationsnippets such as Google and blogs.

In short, more students today face anincreasing number of pressures. our chal-lenge is not only to seek access for moreresources but also to provide more guidanceenabling students to more successfullynavigate through an ever-changing academicenvironment. Q

The Centre for Teaching and Learning is a unit withinthe Office of the Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic).Its mission is to enhance the quality of student learningand support instructors in their teaching roles.

More students attend higher education eachyear, increasing about one per cent annuallyto 822,501 attending higher education nationally in 2009.

More diversity – as higher education participation increases for women, visibleminority members, and urban residents.Female students continue to outnumbermale counterparts. International studentsare also growing, and as of 2008 accountfor eight per cent of graduates. Increasingnumbers of first-generation students areattending and facing challenges althoughreasons for gaps in success rates, such assupport or information knowledge, are debated.

More financial pressure rests on theirshoulders. Although the 23 per cent averagewage gap between college educated anduniversity educated students is enticingmore students, the cost of attending uni-versity has grown 177 per cent since 1990,with an undergraduate degree resulting inan increased average debt load, now at$37,000. the crunch means 34 per cent

Many of us can name a woman who has made a difference in our lives. often she isa mother, sister or close friend. or she could have played only a small role that

does not seem significant until much later. these special women are being honoured bythe Ban Righ Centre in the Who Is She? campaign.

“People are invited to pay tribute to women whose well-timed acts of kindness or exceptional examples helped to shape their lives,” says Barbara Schlafer, Director, BanRigh Centre. “It’s a great opportunity to honour a special person and at the same timeprovide financial support to the Ban Righ Centre.”

Who Is She? began with an idea at a Ban Righ Centre board meeting earlier this year.Jane Good, board member and career counselor in Career Services, suggested theybuild on something Ms Schlafer had been doing all along.

“Every time someone makes a gift to the Ban Righ Centre in honour of a loved one,she acknowledges this gesture with a note, offering kind words about the woman beinghonoured,” says Ms Good. “this campaign takes Ms Shlafer’s recognition one stepfurther and celebrates the lives of special women in a more public way.”

tom Harris, VP (Advancement), is extremely supportive of Who Is She? Followinghis lead, Faye Ransom in the Gift Planning office enthusiastically embraced thefundraising aspect, the technical services group assisted with the website, and themarketing team designed the beautiful promotional material.

“I was hooked immediately on the idea of Who Is She? I truly believe that there is aspecial woman in all of our lives who has made a difference,” says Ms Ransom, whospeaks with huge admiration for the efforts of the Ban Righ Centre. “My hat goes off tothe staff there.”

Lisa Webb, Student Advisor at Ban Righand coordinator for Who Is She?, is encouragedby the cooperative spirit that helped createthe campaign. “Working with people acrosscampus for this campaign has reinforcedone of the basic tenets of the Ban RighCentre – the importance of interactionswith and respect for people,” she says.

The ban Righ Centre, operated through the ban RighFoundation, carries on the tradition of encouragingwomen’s achievements, which began in the 1870s bythe women who came to Queen’s. The ban Righ Centreis unique throughout north American universities,and is the focus of campus life for mature womenstudents.

in Gaelic, ban Righ is a composite of two words. banis the nominative for woman. Righ means sovereignor monarch. it also means ‘of right’ or ‘enthronement’.put the two words together to get ‘the sovereignwoman’ or ‘the elite woman’.

Cultural studies director embarks on new challengeBY MARK KERR

Lynda Jessup leavesher post as directorof cultural studies forone year knowing shehas helped buildsomething special.

“the graduateprogram is excitingbecause it was insti-

tuted all at once and came into being fromnothing. the program didn’t grow out ofan undergraduate program in cultural studies,”says Dr. Jessup, who moves to New Yorkin September to become a Fulbright Scholar.

the response has been encouraging ayear after Queen’s launched the program.

“I think the students and faculty areenjoying it. It has been a really positiveexperience for everybody,” she says.

the program steering committeebrought together 65 faculty members acrosscampus to create an interdisciplinary spacewhere they could work together creatively.

“the program created a rich intellectualbase that wasn’t there before,” says Dr.Jessup. “As the students developed theirresearch projects, they became a reasonfor those faculty members to come together.”

Dr. Jessup values her work with graduatestudents. She won the excellence in graduatestudent supervision award last year. Herphilosophy is that a professor supervises astudent not a thesis, preparing them tocommunicate their research and to teach.

“As a supervisor you are a graduatestudent’s cheering section,” she says.

In turn graduate students push Dr.Jessup intellectually and force her to thinkcreatively about her own research on mu-seum representation. Her next project inthat field is the role art exhibitions playedin Canadian foreign and domestic policyin the middle decades of the 20th century.

Dr. Jessup will do much of that researchover the next year at the Rockefeller ArchiveCenter in New York State as a FulbrightScholar. the Canada-U.S. Fulbright Program,one of the most prestigious in the world,enhances understanding between the twocountries.

Dr. Jessup and her partner Jeffrey Brison,a Queen’s history professor, are busy prepar-ing to move into a place near the archivecentre in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. Dr. Brisonbegins a Rockefeller fellowship at thearchive centre in December. Q

PROFILEQueen’s project a highlight of World Expothe work of a Queen’s psychology professor is on display at one of the biggest events inthe world. Niko troje’s “Walker installation” is part of the Life & Sunshine pavilion atExpo 2010 in Shanghai, China. the life-sized “walker” is a series of dots that resemble aperson. the positioning of the dots and their movement make the person appear maleor female, light or heavy, happy or sad. Users can change these attributes interactivelyand then send the walker out into a virtual world. More than 70 million people areexpected to attend the expo before it wraps up on oct. 31.

Queen’s participates ininternational collaborationto improve indigenoushealthQueen’s is taking part in a new internationalinitiative aimed at improving chronicdisease care for Indigenous patients. MichaelGreen of the Department of FamilyMedicine is one of the researchers whowill investigate similarities among thehealth issues of Indigenous peoples inCanada, New Zealand and Australia. theprogram was developed and funded bythe Canadian Institute of Health Research(CIHR), the Health Research Council ofNew Zealand, and the National Healthand Medical Research Council of Australia.CIHR is providing $1.25 million to supportthe Canadian contributions to this project.the teams will meet regularly over thenext five years to share their expertise andcompare findings. Q

discovery may slow thegrowth of malignantmelanomaA discovery by Queen’s researchers showsthat the growth of melanoma, one of thedeadliest forms of skin cancer, can beslowed by a little-known gene calledMicroRNA 193b. Victor tron, head ofPathology and Molecular Medicine,  dis-covered that the gene found in people’sDNA is deficient in melanoma tumors.Unknown until 10 years ago, the gene hasnot been widely studied. Further studieswill be needed to find out what causesmiR-193b levels to go up and down.Melanoma is one of the least commonforms of skin cancer, yet causes 75 percent of skin cancer deaths. the study wasrecently published in the American Journalof Pathology.

THREE nE W sTUdEnT LEAdERsTAkE THE HELmnick Day brings a strong sense of socialpurpose, a degree in politics, and an en-thusiastic spirit to the office of the Rector.Elected earlier this year to serve as the32nd rector, Mr. Day will focus on socialissues including the environment, social jus-tice, and equality during his two-year term.

“these important social issues are oftenpushed aside, especially during a time ofeconomic and political uncertainty,” he says.

the position of rector is unique amongCanadian universities, with a mandate to“represent all Queen’s University under-graduate and graduate students in matterspertaining to education.”

As rector he will hold positions withboth the Board of trustees and Senate.Mr. Day will begin a master’s program incultural studies in September.

AMS president Safiah Chowdhury, wantsto create an inclusive, positive atmospherefor all students.

In 2007, as a first-year student, MsChowdhury found opportunity where other

visible minorities might have been dis-couraged. While Queen’s was facing ethnictension on campus, she volunteered withthe Queen’s University Muslim StudentAssociation. Bolstered by the role sheplayed in affecting positive change, shejoined the AMS Social Issues Commission.It didn’t take long for her leadership abilitiesto be noticed by her peers.

“People kept encouraging me to run,”says the fourth-year politics student, “andI finally threw my name in with BenHartley, Vice-President (operations), andChris Rudnicki, Vice-President (UniversityAffairs).” All three campaigned to victory.

Her goals as president include initiatingprinciples of equity and continuing topromote better sustainability practices oncampus.

Jawad Qureshy had a feeling his back-ground in finance would be an asset whenhe decided to become more involved withthe Society of Graduate and ProfessionalStudents (SGPS), and run for president.

“With my experience in small business,I thought I could improve the organization,”says the second-year master’s student ofeconomic history.

A key role of the SGPS is to broadenthe social and recreational aspects for stu-dents. He also hopes to organize professional

development activities for members.the SGPS represents upwards of 4,000

students at Queen’s, and approximately 10per cent of those are Queen’s employees.“We are very pleased to represent all em-ployees who are pursuing graduate studies,”says Mr. Qureshy. Q

Mark Publicover might have heeded hiswife’s advice and retired this year, but it’sclear he is not ready for a quieter life just yet.on July 1, he became president of Queen’sUniversity Staff Association (QUSA). Inmany ways, he is old hat at this role, havingdone it before from 1992 – 1998, and alsoserving as president for CUPE Local 254from 2000 – 2005, when he held a union-ized position.

“this is a time of significant uncer-tainty,” says Mr. Publicover, referring to thestaff union certification vote that tookplace on campus in the spring, and ongo-ing deliberations between the universityand the United Steelworkers Union that

will continue into the fall.“I’m walking into the QUSA presidency

not as someone who is turning QUSA intoa union, but as someone who wants to im-prove communications between the QUSAexecutive and its members, and among itsmembers,” he stresses.

Mr. Publicover is committed to ad-vancing the interests of staff and represent-ing QUSA members in a consultative waywith administration. Retirement for himwill have to wait – at least for one more year.

the Queen’s Community and UniversityGarden is flourishing in more ways than one.

the pilot project beside the StoneHouse at 300 Sir John A. Macdonald Blvd.proved popular right away. All 16 plotswere quickly rented this spring. And nowthe gardeners’ labour is starting to bearfruit (and vegetables) as the unmistakablescent of basil and tomato plants fills the air.

Sustainability manager Aaron Ball saidthe results have been fantastic. He hasheard only positive comments from theparticipants.

While the gardeners look forward toeating fresh produce, they reap other ben-efits from the community garden.

“I have really enjoyed the tranquility ofworking on our garden,” says DeannaMason, a Writing Centre staff member,who tends the plot with her husband Brandon Alakas.

With its roots firmly planted, the gar-den has a bright future ahead. Mr. Ballhopes next year to expand the existingplots and add more beds to accommodatepeople on the waiting list. Q

“People are going to spend a lot moretime pointing and clicking and less timeentering data,” says Rick Palmer, QUASRstudent project manager.

Mr. Scott acknowledges there will be aperiod of adjustment.

“It’s human nature to be nervous aboutchange, but given time, I think everyonewill agree the new way of doing things isbetter,” he says.

Ms Arniel says the testing eased hermind about the new system.

“It’s a relief working in the system andrealizing that everything’s going to be fine,”she says.

Jennifer Saunders, an admission officerin the School of Medicine, expressed similarsentiments.

Employees responsible for student admis-sions and administering financial aid re-cently explored the new software they willuse starting in october.

Until recently student administrationemployees had heard about the newPeopleSoft system, which is part of thethree-year Queen’s University AdministrativeSystem Replacement (QUASR) project, butthey hadn’t seen it. over the last few weeks,though, they’ve gotten some hands-on ex-perience using the software, which willensure a smooth transition when the systemgoes live.

“I hope that getting employees usingthe system will build their confidence andexcitement as they see some of the newthings they will be able to do and the inte-gration that’s going to exist,” says GaryScott, who oversaw the testing.

Employees received a brief overviewof the system before trying it out on theirown. Mr. Scott and QUASR staff memberswere in the room to answer any questionsthat came up.

Suzanne Arniel, undergraduate admis-sion manager (processing and operations),welcomed the chance to work with thesystem.

“I found that I quickly got comfortablewith the screens and how they are set up,”she says.

the testing will allow the project teamto resolve issues with the new system thatcould interfere with employees doing theirjobs. once it’s been confirmed that thesystem supports the business, training willbegin for a broader group of campus users.

the new web-based administration sys-tem will eliminate the constraints of theold mainframe system and, in turn, simplifyprocesses and make them more consistentacross the university. Data will be moreaccurate because information will onlyhave to be entered into the system once.

“the testing is a good chance to seewhat the system does,” she says.

Instead of its own system, the Schoolof Medicine will now use PeopleSoft toprocess its applications.

“It’s a big change but really positive,”Ms Saunders says.

once the transition for student admissionsand financial aid is complete, testing andtraining will begin for student records. atpart of the system is due to go live nextMarch in time for students to register usingthe new system for courses offered duringthe spring and summer.

the countdown is also on for the new human resource PeopleSoft system launchingin December.

CLivE sTRACHAn, residencecustodian at Morris Hall, will welcome 200or so students to their new home this Sep-tember. It’s the time Mr. Strachan likes bestin the academic year.

“I enjoy seeing the new faces. Duringorientation we establish a relationship –the first-years and I. they soon discoverthat I’m there for them for the next eightmonths,” he says.

Mr. Strachan has been a Queen’s em-ployee for 10 years and truly loves his job.this is reflected in the way he relates tohis colleagues and to the young people hesees every day. A McGill University graduatehimself, he may at times be putting hispsychology degree to use when he sensesthat certain students are feeling over-whelmed with their new living arrangement

and post-secondary lifestyle. “I might notice if they’re alone a lot. I

pick up on the small things. So I talk tothem and ask them how school is going,what projects they’re working on,” he says.

Casey Steele, Sc ’10, was a civil engi-neering student living in Watts Hall whenhe met Mr. Strachan, and speaks for hun-dreds of students who have benefited fromthe custodian’s lively presence in residencebuildings.

“He is very respectful and always in-terested in the floor and in the community.He’s welcoming and a super happy guy.Students come to trust him,” says Mr. Steele.

As a dedicated employee, a considerateperson, and a respected colleague, CliveStrachan sets a high standard of employeeexcellence. Q

WEndy LLoyd’s name hasbeen synonymous with assistance and in-spiration for hundreds of employees whosought to develop their careers and pursuehigher education. this September, whileemployees sign up for career workshopsand the 160 employees who are also part-time students register for their courses, MsLloyd will begin the next phase of her life– retirement.

With 42 years of service to Queen’s,Ms Lloyd followed a circuitous path toher last role as learning and developmentspecialist in human resources. She beganas a key punch operator in 1968, movingto records clerk, and finally creating anentire training unit, which she has led formore than 20 years. Due to her dedicatedefforts to this unit, Queen’s is now offeringa full slate of training opportunities as wellas four certificate programs for staff.

“It’s very rewarding to think that whatI did played a part in people getting pro-motions and taking on new responsibilities,”she says.

Ms Lloyd is also a testament to the tu-ition assistance program – the one thatshe has administered for so many years –having completed her BA in psychologywhile working full-time.

She plans to gradually transition to retired life. to begin with, she vows to“enjoy every minute of autumn this year.”She will also continue to volunteer in thecommunity and teach yoga.

THE QUEEn’s HUmAn HisToRy pRoJECT

The 1960s evokes images of rock concerts, hippies and hand-painted Volkswagen vans. But that famous decade represents

far more than rock and roll, flower power, and psychedelic art. Italso gave rise to urgent social issues including civil rights, envi-ronmentalism, Vietnam and the Cold War, and feminism, just toname a few.

textbook definitions aside, how did the 1960s affect you? Itwas this question that provided the starting point for the Queen’sHuman History Project.

Coordinated by Queen’s Archives and the Retirees Associationof Queen’s, the project’s goal is to compile a comprehensive oralhistory of the memories and stories of faculty and staff who beganworking at Queen’s in the 1960s.

“I hope this project will complement the official recorded historyof Queen’s that currently ends in 1961,” says Deirdre Bryden,archivist, University Records. Co-organizers of the project are Alison Morgan and Lynn Kirkwood of the Queen’s Retirees Association, and Brian osborne, Professor Emeritus, Departmentof Geography.

Begun in 2007, the Queen’s Human History Project provides anoutstanding opportunity for students to learn about the university’s

history, and to gain valuable work experience in a research andadministrative environment.

over the past four years, student interviewers Laura Swan,Gemma Barker, Hope Hutchins, Laurel Dault, Amelia Wilkinson,Caroline Garrod and Holly tousignant have spent summermonths researching and conducting in-depth, digitally recordedinterviews with retired faculty and staff, from former principalsand their wives, to groundskeepers, administrative staff, profes-sors and security personnel.

the compiled interviews provide a fascinating glimpse intothe lives of a diverse and extraordinarily accomplished group of individuals, and how Queen’s culture and policy were affectedby important social and political events in Canada and the world.
