I hope that, as mayor of Espinho, you can follow Viana doCastelo, Braga, Cascais and Sintra in their widely welcomedannouncements that they will no longer authorise local bull-fights. Perhaps also, Espinho could go one step further anddeclare itself Portugal's second anti-bullfighting city.

The bullfighting conference, featuring young bullfighters, wasdue to take place at the Jean-d’Arcet d’Aire-sur-Adour HighSchool in Landes.

But after the Alliance’s ClaireStarozinski pointed out to theschool’s authorities that “it’s notthe role of national education topromote bullfighting in educa-tional establishments”, it wasdecided to that the conference

could only be held outsideschool hours and that studentswishing to attend would have toobtain parental permission.

The result was that only 9 outof 185 students showed an inter-est in attending. AllianceAnticorrida has expresseddelight with this outcome, sayingthey feel a renewed determina-tion to guard young people fromwhat is essentially the encour-agement of cruelty.

They also report that the princi-pal has invited the group tocome to the school to speakabout the cruelty of bullfighting!

THE IRISH Council AgainstBlood Sports has praisedAndrea Bocelli's managementcompany after they confirmedthat bullfighting footage hasbeen dropped from a visualdisplay at the singer's con-certs.

Replying to an appeal fromICABS, Almud Music agreed thatbullfighting is an "exhibition ofcruelty" and that the scene wasremoved after complaints weremade at a Dublin performance inMarch.

The footage of an injured bull ina bullring prompted one concert-goer to complain to venue man-agement. On RTE's Livelineshow, she described how herand her husband were upset atthe scene and left during thesong Granada (which containsthe line "Granada, a land cov-ered in blood from the bullfightingafternoons").

In a letter to Almud Music,ICABS stated: "The beauty ofAndrea Bocelli's voice should notbe aligned with the gruesome-ness of bullfighting.”

Replying, a spokesperson forthe company expressed sorrowat the reaction the video pro-voked and condemned bullfight-ing: "Bullfight, also in our opinion, represents a useless exhibitionof cruelty, which we hopefullyassociate, once and for all, topast ages...as we truly hope thatcrimes (such) as whale killing, fox hunting and other abusesmade by a neglectful modernsubculture will be just a sadmemory."

She also stated that as soon as

they had been made aware of it,they "immediately provided tocensor the most cruel images onthe second evening concert".

"We gently thank your associa-

tion to have focused on the mat-ter, and we will definitely take itinto consideration for next con-certs," she added.

We are absolutely delightedwith this response and thankAlmud Music for their reply. Wealso applaud Patricia, the inspi-rational caller who highlightedthis issue on the Liveline showand who was derided by somecallers for leaving the concertearly.

By voicing her concerns to themanagement of the O2 venueand on national radio, Patriciademonstrates that an individualcan make a difference.

DESPITE AN appeal from theIrish Council Against BloodSports in 2008, a photo of a bull-ring continues to be included inthe brochure for Irish company,Primera Escorted Tours.

The 2009 edition of the publica-tion displays an aerial photo of theRonda bullring and remarks that itis "the world's oldest bullring whichdates back to 1785".

A reference to a bullring is alsomade in a section about Malaga:"Our sightseeing tour takes us tothe highest point of the city,Gibralfaro, the perfect spot to takein the superb vista including thebullring..."

After bringing the violence andcruelty of bullfighting to the atten-tion of Primera last year, we weretold that the company "does notpromote bullfights in Spain nor do

we sell tickets to such events".Defending the inclusion of theRonda bullring as part of a sight-seeing tour of the area, aspokesperson said that it is "part ofthe local history and architectureof that area."

ICABS is happy that Primeradoes not promote visits to the bull-fight or bullring but are disappoint-ed that out of all the attractions intheir Spanish "Magical Medley"tour, an image of a bullring - avenue of deplorable cruelty - con-tinues to be used in the brochureand that a bullring is described asbeing part of a "superb vista".

Please ask Primera to excludebullfighting imagery and refer-ences from future brochures.Email your message to [email protected] or telephone 01-6311077.

CALL FOR END TO BULLABUSE IN LOS ANGELESANIMAL ACTIVISTS arecalling for charges topressed against a companythat supplied bulls to a so-called "bloodless" bullfightevent, the LA Times hasreported (May 26, 2009). The bullfight, part of a

Portuguese festival inArtesia, Los Angeles, wasinterrupted by a humaneofficer working with AnimalCruelty Investigations. The newspaper outlined

that the officer “discoveredthe bull fighters were usinglong wooden sticks withsharpened nails on the endto stab, torment and infuri-ate the bulls. He noticed

the bulls were beingstabbed when he saw bloodand puncture wounds onthe bull when the animalwas being returned to thetrailer from the ring. Thebull had been repeatedlystabbed with up to eightsticks." In California's “bloodless”

bullfights, the animals arenot killed in the ring butafter coming out of thearena, they are sent to aslaughterhouse to be killed.Animal Cruelty Invest-

igations spokesperson,Jane Garrison, stated:"Stabbing a bull with sharp-ened nails is certainly a vio-
