ANNUAL REPORT OF THE BOARD OF MANAGEMENT Presented to members and visitors at Hotel Kew on Monday 28 July 2014. The Board of Management of the Balwyn Cricket Club Incorporated presents for adoption the 94th Annual Report & Associated Statements of accounts for season 2013-14. In season 2013-14, Balwyn Cricket Club fielded four senior teams in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association (VSDCA), five junior teams in the Eastern Cricket Association (ECA) and a representative side in the RM Hatch Under 15 competition. This season our first two XIs played in the North/South group while the 3rds and 4ths competed in the North/West group. Led by Nick Hailey, the 1st XI had a very strong season finishing in 6th place on the ladder and playing finals. Whilst they fought hard in a home Qualifying Final at Balwyn Park against Plenty Valley, the Club’s flagship team was unable to progress further in the finals series. The 2nd XI also had a strong season, finishing in 5th place on the ladder and playing Kew in a Qualifying Final. Similar to the 1st XI, Geoff Kiker’s talented outfit was unable to progress further but should be extremely proud of their season. Rounding out an amazing performance by the Club in finals appearances, the 3rdXI also progressed to a Qualifying Final but fell to Preston. Sadly, three losses in the last three rounds stopped the 4th XI from joining the other sides in finals. This year Balwyn employed a non-playing coach for the first time. Steve Horner grew in confidence throughout the season and the structure he was able to bring to training and the approach to games was instrumental in the top three sides making finals – the first time this has happened in at least the last 20 years. By being able to focus on leading the 1st XI, first-year captain Nick Hailey had a fine season himself and paid back with interest the Club’s decision to appoint him this year. The Match Day Committee comprising Steve Horner and the respective grade captains ensured we were competitive and well prepared throughout the senior sides. The consistency of the Club’s performances helped it to jump six spots in the VSDCA Club Championship, finished equal 11th (out of 28) which represented a significant improvement from the previous season. In season 2013-14 the Club parted ways with Ken McNiece who had acted as our Club umpire for over three seasons. Ken is seeking to further his umpiring career by returning to the VSDCA panel. The Club thanks Ken for his years of wonderful service and wishes him the best for the future. The club this year fielded five junior sides. The organisation of this vital component of the club continues to be undertaken by Brendan Moore. In his very dry and understated manner he gives this very important part of the club much needed structure and is immensely popular for the manner in which he meets the challenges of managing a transient group of players and parents. To those parents that were involved in coaching or other match day contributions we welcome your contributions, thank you for your assistance and interest, and hope that ultimately it will translate in to watching your kids and their friends become senior players at Balwyn Cricket Club. To that end, the junior report later in this document lists the names of some of those players who also stepped up to senior cricket this year and we look forward to their contributions again in 14/15. The aspect of managing the coaching of junior players is always a vexing one, particularly as it often requires a degree of flexibility to assist with early afternoons training sessions and the like. To that end we were fortunate enough to enjoy the assistance of Charlie Walker, Tom Harley, Andrew Moore, Tom Mead, Mitch Carey and Trent Thompson. It was very encouraging to see the work they put in and the feedback we received reflected very well on their contributions. As always the assistance of other senior players would be further welcomed to support the future of the club. Another very important aspect of our junior structure is the In2Cricket (formerly Milo) program. Elizabeth Orr is again a source of great inspiration for the manner in which she continues to serve the club in the capacity as the In2Cricket co-ordinator. The only slightly disappointing aspect of the program was the loss of some of the participants when it is time to graduate to junior cricket to rival junior clubs who do not offer such programs. The RM Hatch Under 15 representative squad was again managed by John Farmer and Elizabeth Orr who have been a perennial presence in the running of this side for a number of years. In addition they were assisted by Steve Duckworth (a current Premier cricketer) who coached the team for the first time. As a club we have adopted the approach of selecting local players with a view to having them become potential senior players in years to come. The results this season were very positive with victories from the first four games. Unfortunately, the squad struggled in the fierce Melbourne heat in the last two rounds and were unlucky to have their bye scheduled right at the end of their carnival. As always it is to be hoped the exposure given to those selected over the fortnight in early January should be of benefit in years to come.

Following this year’s carnival, John Farmer decided to stand down from his position as Team Manager. This is a great loss for the Club as hundreds of young cricketers will attest who have played under him. It was no surprise to see John surrounded by so many successful senior cricketers who have played Hatch at the Presentation Night. The Club thanks John for his enormous contribution to this aspect of club-life. The Club’s financial outcome for 2013-14 was covered off in some depth by our Honorary Treasurer Damian Boland in his very insightful report. We are indebted not only to his financial acumen, but also his hard work in ensuring all challenges related to our financial well-being are covered off, especially in light of the reduction in income from Cricket Victoria which was experienced this year. Financial challenges continue to remain and we as a board are committed in ensuring that we are well placed to meet them. That Damian devotes so much time to not only the financial aspects but also the more mundane and little noticed things, is a tribute to the respect he has for his cricket club and those that comprise it. With Damian at the helm we are confident that the interests of the club and its financial well-being are being addressed in a very professional and forthright manner. In the first few months of the ninth year of his tenure as President, James Sheehan informed the Board of Management of his intention to take up a promotion in the USA that would require him to resign his position. The Club thanks James for his many years of fine service as both President and on the VSDCA Executive. He should be proud that he leaves the club in a stronger position than when he took over. Clinton Kennon stepped in to the role and has brought a fresh, progressive approach that will continue to drive the Club forward both from a playing and strategic perspective. This includes securing the services of former Premier cricketer Liam Murphy for the 2014/15 season which is an exciting development. Our relationship with the VSDCA this season was administered in an effective and positive manner. In particular we offer our thanks to the Secretary Ken Hilton and his assistant Peter Flack. Ken in particular is very quick to address any correspondence or queries we may have and administers the competition in a professional and friendly fashion. We are indebted to the VSDCA’s major sponsor Kookaburra for their support by way of stumps, match balls and promotional material. We were also grateful for the continuation of the Legends and Heroes Twenty20 Cup competition which was again a great success. On matters closer to home we again thank the City of Boroondara for their support in facilitating our ability to play cricket throughout both our senior and junior grades. We appreciate the sound administrative support in particular from Steven Jackson and David Nankervis. The maintenance and standards of the turf wickets by which our facility is often judged was overall well regarded. Additional requests around a flexible fixture or training requirement regarding the facilities were nearly always promptly dealt with and we thank CoB for that. We were also pleased at the acknowledgement the VSDCA gave our club with respect to the state of our facilities and the way in which we interact with our local council. This is certainly a high priority for Cricket Victoria as it seeks to reinforce cricket as the pre-eminent summer sport across the state. At Balwyn Cricket Club we recognise that we have community obligations beyond our sport and to that end we have adopted the ‘Good Sports’ program. This is a national program that promotes a cultural change in sporting clubs away from the negative effects of alcohol use and towards a community and family focus with an emphasis on respecting the safe licensed venue we have. We hope that this initiative coupled with the practical application of the fundamentals within the program, will encourage all parents to continue to view the Balwyn Cricket Club as the club of choice for their children and their friends. The contribution of Jake Gordon, Michael Tuohey and the wider social & fundraising committee in managing our sponsors and co-ordinating club functions is also greatly appreciated. This year also saw the introduction of a Past Player Liaison sub-committee comprising of Jameson Mahoney and Patrick Tuohey. The great success of the inaugural President’s Luncheon was due in large part to the organisational skills and tenacity of Jameson and Pat and it was fabulous to see so many old faces down at Balwyn Park. The Club thanks James Sutherland (Cricket Australia CEO) for taking the time to support Balwyn CC as Guest of Honour on the eve of an Ashes series. Thanks also to Dick Norris (VSDCA Treasurer) who presented Life Member Barrie Provan with a replacement 1977/78 premiership flag. The Hotel Kew proved to be a fine venue for our monthly committee meetings and we thank Peter & Janet Archbold and the team and all of our club members who support the Hotel Kew away from the Club. We thank all our Sponsors and in particular the contributions of the Bendigo Bank, Sofias Restaurant in Balwyn, Cold Rock Ice Creamery, Uniradiology, Glenferrie Gourmet Meats and the Boroondara Lions Club. From an administrative perspective, Chris Wilks continued to provide outstanding support to the Club as our MyCricket Coordinator. The online MyCricket system provides an excellent platform for entry of scorecards and tracking of clubs’ membership and playing statistics. However, it is a time-consuming task to accurately

enter match statistics onto the web at the conclusion of matches. If this task is left to many volunteers, the risk of incomplete or inaccurate information is greatly enhanced and we are grateful to Chris for managing this process. As noted above, this season saw us improve efforts to maintain contact with former players and it was particularly pleasing that one of our long serving former players and life member in Bud Walder was on hand to present the medal named in his honour to Mitchell Carey at the presentation night. We also thank our many past players who contributed to the club through taking up Golden Tiger coterie memberships. It is to be hoped that in years to come that this initiative will be the bridge that keeps our past players actively engaged in the well-being of our club. We look forward to the 2014-15 season with much optimism. PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2013/2014 was a great season for the Balwyn Cricket Club. We managed to get our top 3 sides in the finals for the first time in our history. We all bowed out in the first week but in all games were a chance at some stage to take the chocolates and can build on this for next season. It was a tremendous effort by the players and you can all hold your heads high as you did the Balwyn CC proud. This year we had Steve Horner as a non-playing Coach for the first time in our history. Results showed for themselves the impact Steve had on the playing group and the club. I congratulate Steve on doing a wonderful job and expectations are a little higher for season 2014/15. The bar has been set by not only Steve but the entire playing group. We were lucky enough to recruit Charlie Walker from England for the season. He had a great year making 525 runs and taking 18 wickets. He was the JL Seelenmeyer Trophy winner and made two centuries (113* v Elsternwick & 113 v Moorabbin). He had a great impact off the field and was integral on bringing a great vibe back to Balwyn for the season. We hope to have Charlie back at Balwyn CC for Season 2014/15. Well done to the skippers of the four elevens. Nick Hailey, Geoff Kiker, Adrian Ting/Chris Wilks and Michael Letcher. You all led your sides so well and l was very proud of all the effort you guys made and sacrifices to have your sides playing competitive cricket week in, week out. The club was awarded the Spirit of Cricket Award jointly with Bayswater CC. We congratulate Bayswater on their result. We were over the moon with the news. We played the game hard this year but in the right way. The award is sponsored by Cricket Victoria and we thank them for their ongoing support to Sub-District Cricket. Our club would not survive without the generosity of our Sponsors. I would personally like to thank Hotel Kew, Sofia’s, Pancake Parlour, Glenferrie Gourmet Meats, Bendigo Bank, Lions Club, Uniradiology and Cold Rock Ice Creamery. Years of continued support has helped the workings of the club operate. Thanks must also go to City of Boroondara for producing outstanding facilities for us to play cricket on week in, week out. Congratulations to David Nankervis and his team of Curators, Sports Liaison Officers and support staff for making Balwyn Park and Gordon Barnard Reserve great places to play cricket. Thanks to the VSDCA Executive for their ongoing support. Without the help and guidance of Chairman Phil O’Meara, President Jack Sheehan, Secretary Ken Hilton, Treasurer Dick Norris and Assistant Secretary Peter Flack we would struggle to play cricket on a weekly basis. This year l took over from James Sheehan. I would like to thank and congratulate James on his dedication and commitment to the Balwyn CC as President for the past 9 seasons. James did a wonderful job in guiding this club to a healthy position. He has been a great platform for me this year with our many chats and wish him well in his job as Vice President, FRMS, Great Western Bank USA. I would like to thank my Committee for doing the unsung jobs this year. A lot of these jobs go unnoticed and a cricket club would not run without the support of these people. Thanks to Nichola Courtney for her hard work and l wish her well in her own business. Extra thanks to the Executive of the club. Damian Boland as Treasurer has been huge this year. As always, he ran a tight ship with the books and his forecasting skills help us where we are today. Secretary Nick Courtney was always there behind the scenes putting out fires and making sure the club was up to date on all matters Cricket. These people made sure my first year as President was as smooth as it could be and I thank them very much. Brendan Moore did another great job with the Junior Program. Unfortunately we were unable to field an Under 16’s side this year but filled Under 10’s, Under 12’s and Under 14’s well. Thanks to all the Coaches and Team Managers for their support to the Junior Program at Balwyn CC. Well done to Elizabeth and Grant on conducting a successful Milo program. Look forward to seeing some of these kids play in our junior sides for years to come. Our Hatch program was run a little different to previous years. We employed the services of District Cricketer Steve Duckworth (Fitzroy-Doncaster CC) to coach the Hatch side this year. He was backed well by John Farmer and Elizabeth Orr who again did a mountain of work behind the scenes. All reports were the Program was a success this year and look forward to Steve Duckworth continuing in his role as Hatch Coach for next season. The club is pleased to announce the signing of Liam Murphy. Liam will join us as Assistant Coach to Steve Horner and First XI Captain. Liam has come from the Prahran Cricket Club where he played over 240 games, made 5,550 runs with 6 hundreds. It is very pleasing to have signed Liam and we hope that he will make an immediate impact at our club. I look forward to everyone getting to know Liam and having him around Balwyn CC for a long time. Welcome aboard Liam.

Congratulations to Rod and Denise Martinich on been awarded Best Club-people this year. The work they did around the club was amazing, from helping with afternoon teas, cooking dinners on Thursday nights (The Burgers are Better at Balwyn!!) and general help at functions was superb. Thanks again to Rod and Denise from the entre Balwyn CC Community. I would like to thank my wife Bronya and kids Jay and Zoe for their ongoing support for me to be President and play cricket at Balwyn CC. Without their support l would not be able to fulfil my duties as President or player. Congratulations again to all involved at Balwyn CC for Season 2013/14. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year as President of the Club and look forward to many more. Enjoy the off-season, stay safe and I look forward to seeing you all at pre-season. PAST PLAYER LIAISON REPORT

The 2013/14 season saw the Past Players’ Committee make a concerted effort to re-engage with former players of all eras.

The inaugural President's Luncheon was held in November 2013. The guest speaker was CEO of Cricket Australia, James Sutherland, and he graciously gave of his time to share his thoughts on the future of Australian Cricket. The event was attended by 90 past players and guests and was a huge success both financially for the club, and as a way for past players to reconnect with the club and reminisce with former team-mates.

The concept of a President's Lunch was several years in the making and thanks must go to James Sheehan (former President), Damian Boland (MC on the day) and many others who sourced raffle items, guest speakers and the like to make the event such a huge success.

This will be a standing event on the Balwyn Cricket Club calendar and we hope that all those who attended share with other past players how much they enjoyed the day and let's hope to build on the number of attendees in the future.

Two other gathering were held late in the season, the Kew game and the last home-and-away game against Kingston Saints. Whilst the turn-out at these events was nowhere near that at the President's Luncheon it was great to see the same old blokes and support the 1's in the push for finals. The players very much appreciate a bit of extra support, so as past players please make an effort to come down and support the Club whether there is an official function on or not.

Details of all events will be shared well before the start of the season, so clear your calendar and get back to Balwyn.

I look forward to seeing more of you next season and hearing about “how good you were in your day”.

THE CLUB CHAMPIONS From 1949-50 the best-performed player in the 1st XI was awarded the club champion trophy (Lindsay Traeger Trophy). In 1978 the club champion was re named the JL Seelenmeyer Trophy in honour of Jack who had died the previous year. The BA Provan Trophy was created in 1985 with players in all teams being eligible for the award. The winner of the JL SeelenmeyerTrophy was thereafter referred to as the 1st XI champion but was not eligible to win both awards. Both awards are decided on a points formula for runs, assisted wickets, unassisted wickets, catches, stumpings, run outs direct and run outs assisted. The BA Provan Trophy includes points awarded for home and away fixtures only. THE BUD WALDER MEDAL A brilliant leg spin bowler and very capable middle order batsman, Bud has been a five time club champion, coached the club and represented the VSDCA side on many occasions. He was awarded life membership in 1979 and is still a staunch supporter and a very popular member of the Balwyn Cricket Club. The Bud Walder Medal is awarded on a 3-2-1 basis across all grades. An excellent all round year saw Mitchell Carey (16 votes) take out the Bud Walder medal for 2013-14 in a tight finish to Michael Tuohey, David Bell and Michael Letcher (14 votes). Obviously the tight finish captured the interest of the ‘punting syndicates’ at a very well supported and attended evening. RESULT 2013/14

COACH’S REPORT

After our final game this season I had several people telling me I should be proud of my efforts, I tend to disagree about my efforts but rather the Club should be proud of its efforts. We were not looked upon as being contenders this season but through the players wanting to improve the way that they have we finished the season with 3 teams in finals, a magnificent effort no matter what level it is at, and the 4th XI missing only just. As a group we finished 12th in the VSDCA Club Championship but not only that, we were also joint winners of the Spirit of Cricket Award with Bayswater, which highlights that we are a club that plays the game the right way - hard but fair - and also highlights the fact we are playing together as a group, enjoying success but also enjoying the game. I am a believer in doing the boring parts of the game more than the flashy bits, accordingly we introduced some standards or minimums for each player to do at training. For the most part, I believe the results speak for themselves. We set a new club record for the amount of centuries in a season (ten tons) and we also made more fifties. We took more 5 wicket hauls and also more 4-for’s than the previous season. We also took nearly 30 more catches; these efforts make a difference. These were definitely highlights for me along with the three teams in the finals and being involved with my first Tiger Day (four wins in the one round). I make no apologies for being a bit of a grump at times as I have seen the ability in you all and I will do everything I can to bring that out of you. But for the most part, we had a great feeling at training during the season, exemplified by the amount of players attending training in the rain and the 40-plus degree days, even with appalling Hawaiian shirts. All through this there was an amazing work ethic, these efforts transferred to our performance on Saturdays. You showed that when you put that bit more in you get a bit more back. My coach’s award is not only about performance on Saturday, but also about training and work ethic. Three or four players fell into this category but I think Luke Prior was a standout this season. He came back to the club during preseason after playing Hatch with us a couple of years ago. He was at nearly every session during preseason, he missed only a couple of training sessions for the season (and those due to illness). After starting with a bit of a lean period, he continued to bowl well at training and Saturdays and it changed and he started getting the rewards for his effort. He took wickets and was given a chance in the 2nd XI and grabbed it with both hands. I think he works harder than a lot of guys, giving a bit of lip in the nets, listens to advice and shows an enormous amount of pride in his performance and that of his teammates. My hope is he is here for a long time to be part of the future of this club. He took 19 wickets 20.84, 72 runs @ 10.29 and took 3 catches. Congratulations Luke, great reward for effort, hope you continue with the same effort and intensity next season. I would like to take this opportunity to thank a few people. James Sheehan for taking a risk by showing faith in me and giving me this great honour of being the Club’s first non-playing coach. Clinton Kennon and his committee for being so helpful and allowing us to try and expand our ideas for the playing group and also the juniors. I would also like to thank the captains, Nick, Geoff, Chris, Adrian & Michael. I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the selection group and appreciate the amount of time you guys put in every week. I would also like to thank John Farmer. Polly, you were a great help to me during the season setting up nets, score updates etc…, clubs don’t always recognise efforts like yours but thank you very much for all you have done especially with the many years of service with our Hatch squad. Most of all I would like to thank my wife, Karen, for allowing me to follow my passion for the game and coaching and to have time away from my family. Next season brings a real sense of excitement, we have recruited a new assistant coach and 1st XI captain in Liam Murphy, and we will hopefully retain most of our current playing group but also look to build on our group and our successes. Next season brings with it a new challenge, it is about not proving ourselves but continuing to improve ourselves and that will only happen if the self-belief and enjoyment remains within the group. So….. How good is it at Balwyn? Steve Horner Balwyn CC Coach

MATCH COMMITTEE - PLAYING REPORTS 1st XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT Season 2013/14 was a success for the 1st XI. We stated that our aim was to make finals and we achieved that goal. Congratulations to the entire Balwyn Cricket Club for achieving this – as a Club we are judged by the 1st XI and it takes everyone pulling in the same direction to produce a strong, top side. External predictions on how we would fare in season 2013/14 were a lot less flattering – every person I spoke to outside of the Club believed we would finish in the bottom four. They pointed to some facts that looked bleak. Coming off a disappointing 12th place the previous summer, the 1st XI also had to deal with the loss of four significant players in Captain Coach Hanley, 100+ game player Patrick Tuohey, as well as solid performers Young and Woods. A new Captain and a non-playing Coach were both unproven. The Match Committee had a different perspective. The previous season we lost all of our close matches, it was a winning mentality that was required rather than a lack of ability. A 2nd XI premiership also proved we had depth and could cover the changes in personnel. We also worked hard to attract an overseas professional in Walker and welcomed back former player Carey. The season didn’t get off to a great start. We were thrashed in our first game against Caulfield and lost the second. The season was in a precarious position midway through round 3, with Preston making 185 in their allocated 45 overs. A breath-taking, Club record opening stand of 183 by Thomson and Miles not only won us the game, it also kept our season alive and provided belief and momentum. I cannot over-state the importance of that innings, with Thomson making his debut 1st XI hundred and Miles 77 not out. We were then to go on an amazing run, winning seven of the next nine games. The only two sides to beat us during that run were arguably the best in the competition, Malvern and Plenty Valley. We must keep that winning mentality and remember the confidence we had during that period. Unfortunately, we lost our last two games of the season and just managed to hold onto sixth position. This meant playing the undefeated Plenty Valley in the first final. Plenty Valley showed why they were such a strong side with a commanding total of 335. We were outclassed and didn’t have the answers with the ball. I was heartened by our ‘never give up’ mentality as we compiled an extremely impressive 271 in reply, the highest score against them for the year. We have now tasted finals and have seen the level required to push further next season. Batting We had a great season with the bat, with the top seven batsman all making runs. Our focus as a batting group was to get in and make big scores. The prior season we didn’t have a centurion, this year we had an astounding four. We also managed to compile six 100+ run partnerships. In every game that we made an individual 100 or had a 100+ run stand, we won. This is no coincidence and we must push to be even more ruthless next season. Walker proved his class with 525 runs @ 40.38, including two centuries. This puts him in the elite bracket of batsmen in our competition. Thomson and Miles developed a great opening partnership and regularly set the side up with solid starts, which is so important for the rest of the team. Carey proved his all-rounder status with quality runs and gave us extra depth in the batting ranks. Bowling Our bowling was solid throughout the year. The bowling focuses for the year were consistency and being able to adapt to different game situations. We had two five wicket hauls and managed to break partnerships more regularly this season. Our bowling at its best is fantastic; we need to simply perform to that level consistently. Michael Tuohey continues to improve every season. He led the bowling attack and took 27 wickets @ 17.70 including his maiden 1XI 5 wicket haul. Carey had a great season with 23 wickets and Walker 18. Fielding Tsesmelis and Looker shared the wicket-keeping duties and both did a great job. Our ground fielding was terrific and we were probably the benchmark in the competition. However, our catching needs improvement and we need to keep working on this basic skill through repetition at training. We had 16 players through the 1st XI for the season, plus a couple of sub-fielders. Congratulations to Walker, Talevski and Tregear who all made their 1st XI debut. The 1st XI is in a terrific position heading into the new season. For season 2013/14, the Club made a huge statement in signing a non-playing coach and Horner has exceeded all expectations. Horner has improved

training, planning and the culture of the Club through his hard work and knowledge. His development of internal talent is exciting and will pay dividends in the long term. Recruiting Liam Murphy as 1st XI Captain is our big statement for season 2014/15. Murphy will not only bring runs, he will also bring quality leadership and knowledge from a higher level that will improve everyone. We had a great season in 2013/14, achieving our aim to play finals and performing well above everyone else’s expectations. Premierships are never won out of the blue; they are won through great planning and continual improvement over a number of years. We now have a solid playing base to improve from, a second year non-playing coach and an exciting new 1XI Captain. Next season we must improve and that means winning at least one final to consider it a success. Thanks to a number of people for making the captaincy such a great experience: Polly, you are the glue of the whole club and your support unbelievable. Thanks for all your dedication and your insight on the game from outside the playing group is invaluable. All the supporters who help out during the year on match day, particularly GT who finished the season in career best form. Steve Horner and the Match Committee, thanks for your countless hours. The Committee for providing the opportunity to captain such a great club. And finally, the 1st XI playing group. Thanks for all of your support this year and making the role so enjoyable. I look forward to what we will achieve in 2014/15. Nick Hailey First XI Captain

2nd XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Firstly I would like to acknowledge the Committee. The success of the club is due to their tireless work and efforts. After losing James Sheehan, our President for the past nine years, it was always going to be a large hole to fill. However, I feel with the appointment of Clinton Kennon, aka “Bull”, we have some exciting years ahead and with his passion for the game and the Club we will achieve great success. Backing up from last season as Premier, this year was always going to be a challenge. With four changes from the grand final side for our Round 1 clash against Caulfield, I was very eager to see how we would go. It was a game that saw us win with five balls to spare and I couldn’t have asked for much more. Heading into Christmas with four wins and three loses we still had some work to do to get into the final six. Unfortunately after Christmas, we started with two losses that were winnable games and that put us right back into the pack. It was going to be an almighty challenge to make the final six, especially coming up against one of last year's finalists and premier clubs in Malvern. It was a must win, and with the bowlers doing a fantastic job restricting Malvern to 192 runs we were very positive from the outset knocking off 20 runs quickly. Unfortunately we finished the day with 2 for 36. The next week saw us get off to a steady start but we continually started to lose wickets and at one point were 6 for 115 and looking a little shaky. As captain, this game was one of the highlights of my season. In an innings to remember, it came down to our two young up and comers - Jackson Morris, in his first season and only his third 2nd XI game, made 97 runs with his partner Fraser Lane 33 runs, putting on a partnership of 89 runs for the 7th wicket. This was not only a sign of Balwyn Cricket Club’s strength but was a time when young players took the opportunity to stand up. This win turned our season around and we went on to win the next three games and finish fifth on the ladder. Unfortunately we fell to the eventual premiers, but I feel with our young talent playing such important roles throughout the year, many of these guys will go on to play 1st XI Cricket and that is what the ultimate goal is at BCC. I would like to thank my group of players this year. Although we didn’t achieve ultimate success we had some great team and individual performances and became a close unit, especially after our bus trip to Bon Beach which was definitely a highlight for the season. A special thank-you goes to Paul O’Hern who throughout the season was our scorer, helped out with afternoon teas when we had no-one else there and provided invaluable advice before tea, at the break and after the game. This was much appreciated. Cheers!

Thank-you Steve, our first stand-alone coach since I have played. I think this was a fantastic move by the Committee. With one year under your belt, we have exciting times ahead. I look forward to working with you next season. Thank-you so much. See every-one at pre-season! Geoff Kiker Second XI Captain

3rd XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT

After missing finals last year, the 3rd XI made some good progress this season by winning 7 of its 13 games and sneaking into the top 6 to play finals in March. Earlier in the year, the team was struggling with only 2 wins up until Christmas. As we entered the second half of the season, the team started to play some good cricket which resulted in 5 consecutive wins. Sitting 7th on the ladder with 1 game remaining, we needed to knock off 2nd placed Werribee to make finals. Despite a promising start, we only managed a score 160 which Werribee were able to chase down in the 39th over. Thinking that the season was over, the club was contacted on Sunday night by the Subbies with the news that a mistake had been made with the ladder (they failed to take off 3 penalty points from Williamstown from an earlier game in the season) and as such Williamstown were out and Balwyn moved up 1 spot into sixth and into finals. Playing arch rivals Preston at the Preston City Oval, the team was pretty confident of a good showing and after knocking them over for 159 on day one, we felt that the target was certainly within reach. Despite some promising starts, we let ourselves down with the bat and were dismissed 37 runs short in the 54th over. We had some great ‘individual’ and ‘team’ performances throughout the season which included:

3 century makers (Deelan Ramjee 185 in round 10 against Roxburgh Park/Broadmeadows and Jackson

Morris 107 in round 2 versus Brunswick and 113 in round 7 versus Yarraville)

5 players who took more than 10 wickets for the season (Luke Prior 14 wickets @ 20.7, Jacob Jacob

13 wickets @ 13.6, Chris Wilks 13 wickets @ 18.4, Rael Belterman 13 wickets @ 25.5 and Adam Janes

10 wickets @ 18)

A record run chase at Altona With Altona making 5/308 (cc) in their allotted 45 overs, we managed to

chase down their score in 43 overs (7/311) thanks to Deelan Ramjee (69 runs off 39 balls) and run-a-ball

50’s from Damien Boland and Peter Martinich. It was a cracking win and will be something that all the

players remember for many years to come. #notenoughruns

Blooding some exciting new talent with some great potential. One of the most exciting things as

captain of the 3’s is to be part of the progression and development of our new up and coming talent.

Players such as Luke Prior with his leg spin, Will Houston with his left arm pace, Tom Harley with his right

arm mediums, Jackson Morris as a top order batsman and Tim Sheehan with his middle order batting all

improved significantly throughout the year.

Ongoing support and contributions from the ‘old blokes’. Having a good mix of youth and experience

in the team was one of the main reasons we were able to maintain a strong bond within the playing group

and why we were able to string together some good wins and make finals at the end of the year. A big

thank you goes out to Damien Boland, Matty O’Hern, Jacob Jacob, Guy Looker, Rael Belterman and

Adrian Ting who also captained the team at the start of the year.

A big thank you to Rod and Denise Martinich for all of their help throughout the season. Thanks also to Steve Horner as our new coach and the other captains and Committee for their ongoing support throughout the year. Our aim next year is to go one better and return the first 3rd XI VSDCA premiership to the club since the 3rd and 4th XI’s moved across from the Eastern Suburbs Cricket Association to the VSDCA in 1997/98. Bring on season 2014/15!!! Chris Wilks Third XI Captain

4th XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT

This season the 4th XI made needed progress from the last. This progress was reflected in our results (winning 6 games - 5 more than the previous, trying season), in our ladder position (moving away from the bottom of the ladder to the middle tier) and in the games afforded to our young, developing cricketers. This improvement was a result of better organization in our cricket administration enthusiastically led by Steve Horner and supported by the selectors and club leaders with great commitment - thank you guys for making my job easier and more enjoyable. We also were more professional as a team in our preparation and setting up for match day. The players stepped up to game-time demands and their ability to respond accordingly and learn put them in a better position to represent the club at a higher level and also perform in the 4th XI. We still have plenty of room for improvement; let’s keep aiming to be better. Overall we had an indifferent season, which was directly attributed to player availability, a dependency the 4th XI has had for many a season. It is an impediment that I believe does not have to exist when our club is a great club to be at and so many players are enjoying their experience. It is something I’d like to see arrested at the earliest opportunity. The great thing is our coach and staff are the best equipped and prepared people to tackle this since I’ve been at the club (2001). On an individual player level, it was terrific to see Dom Greene (16 yo) break out and score very well and bat with a tinge of class in doing so and bowl with discipline. Looking forward to when he exits private school cricket and plays a full season of senior cricket to allow him to properly flourish as a cricketer. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing other young players like Chris Tsesmalis (14) take his first senior wicket and combine for another wicket with his father Con taking the catch, to see Matthew James (14) exhibit mental strength and remain not out when batting on a very difficult wicket against a quick 2nd XI opening bowler and to share with Tom Harley (18) his first 5 wicket haul and the excitement of the occasion. In particular, it was great to be involved with the start of Declan Kerr-Lawley’s (12 yo) senior cricket experience and to see him make his debut, hit his first senior runs, and make his first dismissal as keeper (you’re welcome). He has an impressive attitude towards the game and a work rate that surpasses a number of senior cricketers, which are some of the outstanding attributes that contributed to him winning the 4th XI Captain’s Award and will take him a long way in his cricket - congratulations Declan. I'd like to thank the Committee and coaching staff for the opportunity to captain the 4th XI for a second season which allowed me to build on what had been established in my first season in the role and continue to develop as a leader. Also thanks to regular players Lachlan Mackay (performance & leadership), Roshen Martinstyen (runs, keeping & filling in), Alok ‘The Beast’ Bist (wickets & scoring), Tom Mead (game setup) and Will ‘Viper’ Ong (all-rounder & great bloke efforts) on their specified contributions. I greatly appreciate everyone’s efforts that have helped me fulfil my role this season, everyone who responded promptly with their news and availability, it really helps, and especially each and every one who represented the 4th XI this season. I hope you all enjoyed your experience in the team and learnt a lot in the process and aim to do even more of this next season. I’m looking forward to seeing you all on the field again in White, Navy and Gold striving for the 4th XI Premiership in 2014/15. #howgoodisitatBalwyn Michael Letcher Fourth XI Captain

10 years ago (2003-04)

Cam Matthews led the Club for a third year and it was noted that training attendances,

spirit and camaraderie were at an all-time high. Cam’s own performances were impacted

by his new daughter’s poor health and his commitments at Cricket Victoria following

the untimely death of David Hookes. Newcomer Martin Gleeson, as well as Joe Mahony,

Jon Kerr and Brett Oliver, all helped to assist Cam where required

Pat Tuohey headed the Social Committee, while Roy Bell led the Club’s fundraising

efforts. It was noted that Life Member Elizabeth Orr almost single-handedly ran the

junior section and Life Member John Farmer was extraordinarily generous with his time

and efforts around the Club as President, 1st XI Manager and scorer, Manager of the

Hatch squad and U/16 Team Manager!

Despite the 4th XI under Matthew Wilson recording a record of 8 wins and 3 losses, the

3rd XI was the only team in the Club to make finals. Led by first-year captain Nick

Courtney, the 3rds had a great season making the Grand Final, but the 3rd XI’s poor

fortune in finals continued going down to Ivanhoe by only 3 runs over two days of

gripping cricket

VSDCA R.M. HATCH UNDER 15 COMPETITION

Given it was the first time I had coached before, I was not entirely sure what was going to happen. All that changed in the first session with the Hatch team when I met John and Elizabeth. It was clear that Balwyn had a great program in place and whilst it would be hard work getting the boys together, I knew that the support was there. Coming into the last weeks of training, we were still awaiting the availability of players given they were trying out for the under 14 and under 16 Inner East Emus teams. With three weeks to go, we still had 8 players who were still trying out for these teams. It was not until the second last week that we were advised that six out of the eight players would be representing the Inner East Emus. This made our squad selection even harder as these six players were in the top 15. Although these players were going to be missing I still had the belief that the squad we had would be competitive and would contest for a top 2 spot. So all the hard training had been completed, the squad finalised and we were all ready for round one of the carnival against Brunswick. Round 1 – It was an overcast day and the boys were pretty excited, yet a bit nervous (I know I was). Having a look at the pitch before the game with the captain (Nathan Boucher) it was imperative that we won the toss and bowled first. Lucky for us Nathan called correctly and we sent Brunswick in. 45 overs later, we had bowled Brunswick out for 69. All through the weeks of training, I stressed to the boys that our fielding will win us most games. On reflection, the boys caught everything that came their way. All wickets were shared but Paddy Frawley and Jon Catania showed great control with their spin. Then it was time for us to bat. I was quite nervous but I knew that we had the ability to knock off the runs and get the win. We passed their total quite easily and then surged forward making 5/218 off our allotted 45 overs. Nathan Boucher made 87 and he received great support from Jack Carroll (42), Toby Woller (35) and Dylan Lea (20). A fantastic team effort and a great way to start the Carnival. Round 2 – Next we were at home against Plenty Valley. The previous day, Plenty Valley had been bowled out for 38 and the boys were quite confident that they would get another victory. We won the toss again and we put the opposition into bat again. The boys once again showed great control with their bowling and their fielding was top notch for the second day in a row. Aiden Pearson was the best bowler taking 3 wickets and Jon Catania and Paddy Frawley bowled in a partnership of 10 overs which yielded about 15 runs with the loss of one wicket. At the end of the 45 overs, Plenty Valley were 9/154. We did not get off to the best of starts losing Jon and Fraser early but we were steadied by Nathan (85*) and Will (13) for a valuable 44 run partnership. At 3/68, the team was feeling comfortable but the loss of Toby left us at 4/68 and needing some help from the lower order. Jack (33) then came out and provided the match winning partnership of 71 runs to get us close to the finishing line. What impressed me the most was the poise and control that both boys showed out in the middle. Jack lost his wicket when the score was 139 and we proceeded to lose a couple more for not many. Being 7 for 142 and only having a few over left, the team was getting very nervous. Luka (we like to call him ice man) arrived at the crease with Nathan and got us over the line. Nathan’s innings was his best for the carnival and the best innings that I had seen over the whole carnival. Speaking to the boys after the game, you could see the joy in their eyes. I let them know that whilst we were not tested the day before, it was fantastic to see how we coped under the pressure of that game. Contributions were made from every player whether it was with the bat, ball or in the field, which made me very a very happy coach. Round 3 – The next day, we were away at Coburg. We were greeted to a fairly wet outfield and a greenish pitch. We won the toss and elected to field again!!! This was our best bowling and fielding performance of the carnival. The boys had Coburg 9/114 at the end of their 45 on a slow outfield. The fielding was outstanding, the field placements and bowling to our field was super. Jon Thiele was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 23 off 8 overs and there were even contributions from all of our bowlers. Small targets are never easy to chase down. We lost Jon Catania early but were steadied with a 30 runs partnership with Paddy and Jon Thiele. We lost regular wickets throughout the chase and at one stage, were 5/60 with 12 overs to go. At that point, Toby and Jack were in and they played carefully and did not take risks until they had a grasp of the pitch and bowling. Once they understood what the game situation was and how their own game was playing out, they took it upon themselves to take the game up to Coburg and blast them out of the water. Toby (32*) and Jack (39*) shared in a 70 run partnership to get us over the line and be 3 from 3.

Round 4 – The next day, we were back at home playing against Ivanhoe who had not won a game for the carnival. Nathan won the toss (again) and we bowled (again). We were able to bowl out Ivanhoe for 118 off their 45 overs with Paddy Frawley taking 4/25 off his 8 overs. Dan Abbott gave great support with his pace bowling with 2/3 off his 5 overs. Taking the field for our batting innings, we did not get off to the best start losing Fraser first ball and Paddy second ball. We then lost Will shortly after that and we were 3 for 4. We were then able to build a 34 run partnership between Jon Catania and Nathan. We then lost them both and the score was 5 for 56 and I thought we were in trouble. Jack (36) was in with first gamer Matt King. In unfortunate circumstances, Matt was not able to play the first 3 games due to an illness but did he make up for missing those 3 games with a match winning 33* to get us over the line and be 4 from 4. This was the best win of the Carnival and a fantastic team effort. Round 5 – The Melbourne summer had truly hit hard and the competition called for all games to start early and play 30 overs a side. We lost the toss and were sent into bat. Overall, it was not our best batting performance but the boys never gave in at any stage and we were able to post 121 for 6 off our 30 overs. At the end of our innings, the temperature got to 40 degrees and I knew the boys were tired given they had played 4 games in a row. This did not stop them from giving their all but Kew was able to pass our total with 7 overs to spare. Whilst it was disappointing to lose, it was fantastic to see that the boys fought all the way to the end. Round 6 – The Melbourne summer did not let up the next day as we were home to Preston. Preston won the toss and elected to bat first. The boys were extremely tired given they had now played 5 games straight whilst other teams had a rest on their bye. As a result of not having a rest day and playing in the heat the day before, we did not bowl or field well and we let Preston reach 159 for the loss of 7 wickets. Going into bat, we knew it would be a challenge but a challenge that we could overcome. We lost Fraser and Jon Catania early on but we were still above the run rate required. Nathan and Jack were playing really well but we lost regular wickets to be all out for 119. Jack was the best of the batsmen with 32. Going into the game, we had to win the last game to make the finals but we fell agonisingly short. Overall, I could not have asked anymore of the boys and they far exceeded my expectations. These sorts of programmes do not run by themselves. I would like to extend my thanks to Life Members John Farmer and Elizabeth Orr for their tireless work through the training and game days. It is help like this that keeps programmes like these running. Also a massive thankyou to the parents for their support at each game and providing the best lunches at a cricket game that I have been involved in. Your support at each game was greatly appreciated by the boys and I could not have asked for a better group of parents to be involved with. A special mention must be extended to Fraser Sutherland and the Sutherland family. During the first game, Fraser had hurt his finger whilst wicket keeping. It was not until the end of the carnival that we realised Fraser had suffered a fractured finger but he still kept playing. Thank you to the Sutherland family for hosting the end of season BBQ at their home. I’m sure everyone in attendance had a great time and fun was had by everyone. Lastly, I would like to thank the Balwyn Cricket Club, James Sheehan and Clinton Kennon for giving me the opportunity to coach the Hatch programme and it is something that I’m truly grateful for. Steve Duckworth Coach

JUNIOR REPORTS

Balwyn has a long and proud tradition of giving the local youth an opportunity to play cricket and develop their cricket skills. In season 2013-14 we fielded five teams: two U14s, two U12s and one U10. Elizabeth Orr once again coordinated our Milo programme and, as usual, did a magnificent job. Balwyn thanks Elizabeth for all her tireless work. We also thank all the parents who helped out on Saturday mornings. The Under 10 team consisted of a mixture of second year and first-up cricketers. The team was once again coached/managed by Tony Barton and Sean Rogan who again did a magnificent job. The team won five matches for the year and really advanced their skills. Congratulations go to the trophy winners: Batting: Christian Rogan; Bowling: Tom Doyle; All Rounder: Dan Sunderland; Best First Year Player: Sam Bates and Coach’s Award: Jamie Miles. The young Under 12 team was coached/managed by Pater Buchanan and Kylie Morarty. The boys all had a productive year working on their skills and won three matches in the process. Congratulations go to the trophy winners: Batting: Harris Carlin; Bowling: Neshant Rao; All Rounder: Jack Lyndon; and Coach’s Award: Joseph Jackson. Congratulations to the premiers: Camberwell Magpies. The older Under 12 team played in a “B” competition and had their first taste of two-day cricket. This is a big step and the boys did really well, winning five games and losing only three. Thanks go to the team day coach/manager Alex Hart. Congratulations go to the trophy winners: Batting: Paul Lindsay, Bowling: Stuart Lumpreiks, All Rounder: Oliver D’Amico and Coach’s award: William Turner. Congratulations to the premiers: Kew. The young Under 14s had a difficult year, not managing to win a game. There was a very good team spirit, largely due to the wonderful enthusiasm of their coach Tom Mead. Thanks to Justin MacDonald for managing

the team. Congratulations go to the trophy winners: Batting: Ben Jepson; Bowling: Dan Bowers; All Rounder: Riley Monaghan and Coaches Award: Hunter Targett. Congratulations to the premiers: Boroondara. The older U14s also had a difficult year playing in the elite “A” competition. The team managed one win and really worked hard to become better cricketers. Two cricketers (Declan Kerr-Lawley and Matt James represented the 4th XI during the year. Thanks to “The Chief” Mitch Carey for coaching, and Rowan Barling for managing the team. Trophy winners were Batting: Matt James; Bowling: Ryan Lumpreiks; All Rounder: Xander Barling and Coach’s Award: Logan Beven. Premiers: North Balwyn. Congratulations to all. As usual, Balwyn fielded a team in the RM Hatch competition run by the VSDCA. The club appointed Steven Duckworth as coach and he was very ably assisted by John Farmer and Elizabeth Orr. Balwyn were only defeated twice and missed out on the finals because of a heat policy-induced fixture change. We thank everyone for their help with the juniors: Charlie Walker, Tom Harley, Andrew Moore, Tom Mead, Mitch Carey and Trent Thompson. We thank the ECA for their administrative efforts and the City of Boroondara for providing our grounds. Thanks to everyone for helping make this another successful year. We hope to see everyone back in October for the next season. Brendan Moore Junior Coordinator

IN2CRICKET / MILO CRICKET Skills through fun and games is the aim of the Balwyn Cricket Club In2Cricket/ MILO Program. This year we were blessed with mixed weather for our Saturday morning sessions, yet still ran 11 sessions giving an introduction to cricket for the many newcomers. With this in mind we had a successful season for the 4 to 9 year olds participating in the Have-A-Go and Have-A-Game cricket. Our team team of parents, led by Coach Co-ordinator, Grant Lingwood-Smith in his third year, helped in organising practices with a focus on improving the boys’ skills. Practice time was followed by cricket games that showcased the joys of team cricket, with Grant leading the Have-A-Game group this year. The Have-A-Go group started their cricketing journey with an emphasis on fun. Have-A-Go, for 4 to 7 year olds, features practice drills and mini games, this year with all parents assisting in making cricket enjoyable for our younger cricketers. There were 18 boys at this level and a few of them will be ready to move to the older group next season. The Have-A-Game group this season was led by Grant, assisted by Geoff Rowles and Andrew Shale, and featured a larger group of 17 keen boys, who enjoyed pairs cricket, after their skills practices. We look forward to some of the boys joining the Balwyn Under 10 team next cricket season. On the final Saturday morning the younger boys played cricket with their parents, while the Have-A-Game group played against a team of their parents. Following these games, with thanks to Brendan Moore, the Balwyn Junior Co-ordinator, we served up a much appreciated sausage sizzle. A highlight of the year for the larger than usual group of boys was providing tea break entertainment during two of the 1st XI matches at Balwyn's home ground, Balwyn Park. Welcoming the players back onto the field through a guard of honour with high fives is a tradition we would like to continue. A special thank you to Grant Lingwood-Smith, who co-ordinated an excellent MILO in2CRICKET program with Geoff Rowles and Andrew Shale. A special thank you to all the parents, who were particularly helpful this year, and thoroughly enjoyed spending Saturday mornings with their children. Elizabeth Orr In2Cricket / Milo Coordinator
