So That We May Never Forget...Locust Point musuem honors servicemenby Zach Davidson

nbeknownst to many South Baltimoreans is a museum honoring our armed forces located on the second floor of the Marine Corporation League building at 1426 E .

Fort Avenue . Will Priest, director of the museum, has amassed a collection of more than 3,000 military artifacts, consisting mainly of personal artifacts from servicemen . After serving briefly in the Air Force, Priest is now a digni-fied senior citizen who substitute teaches special education for Care Resource . Sometimes he even brings in pieces from his collection for students, "to make the history come alive ."

Mostly by his own efforts, Priest has meticulously dis-played and laid out the collection by era and military engagement . Some of the items within the collection are reproductions, but many are genuine . Wherever possible, Priest attaches a name to match the serviceman whom the object belonged to . Visitors may find the preserved rations and toilet paper dating back to WWI fascinating, but they can also try on jackets, parachutes, or tinker with antique field phones . The collection even marks the achievements that minorities have made in the service, displaying photos and posters of African Americans and women in uniform .

Priest started collecting at the age of 13, filling his home and storage facilities not only by scouring garage sales, but also friends’ garages and flea markets . Priest humorously recalls one event when he purchased a rocket launcher (cur-

rently on display at the museum) at a flea market, "The crowd, the sea of people, just parted as I walked around with this thing ."

When asked why he collects and preserves artifacts to put on display, Priest simply says, "This history is a story of the person, it’s about remembering the ordinary person behind the object . People think of history, of famous dates . I think of the guy getting his butt shot off ." The museum focuses particular attention to the Marines, but is a comprehensive look on the personal lives of all who serve, and served .

For Priest, all of the hours and money invested into his hobby is worth it when someone sees an object and recalls a memory . Priest says he often has visitors that will look at his collection of toy GI Joes and say "Oh, I remember play-ing with those ." Or when someone who once served can recall the weight of a parachute .

You can spend at least an hour marveling at the history, and glimpses into the personal lives of those who preserved our freedom . The museum has something for all ages, and is equipped with handicap access .

The museum opened in the fall of 2008, but because of a lack of funds Priest has not been able to advertise, or to expand hours . He accepts donations, but the museum and its collection are preserved largely out of his own pocket .

The museum is located at 1426 E . Fort Avenue, on the second floor of the Marine Corp Detachment Building, and the hours are 12-4 on Saturdays . Please bring a donation for the endowment of the museum, or for the Semper Fi Fund, a charity that assists injured Marines .

reetings All,As you know, fall is my favorite season . And this fall

is particularly nice with the wonderful progress we’ve made in the community over the last couple of years, par-

ticularly in regard to the beautification of Latrobe Park . If you made it to the annual picnic, you saw how beautiful the park looks and it only promises to get better . The Parks & Beautification Committee continues to garner sizeable grants from the City and other organizations and there will be another planting coming up in the next couple of weeks . So, please, get out and enjoy the park while the weather is still nice .

This fall is also exciting because of the lofty predictions for the Ravens . As I write this, the Ravens have already won their opening game and are preparing to travel to San Diego for their second game . There have been predictions that the Ravens will make it far into the playoffs and maybe even to the Super Bowl . Let’s root for the Ravens and enjoy another great season of foot-ball .

As many of you know, last year’s annual festival was essen-tially flooded out by a torrential rain storm that simply would not quit! I am writing this message before this year’s festival has occurred, so I am crossing my fingers that we have a nice day . But, as those who came last year know, we’ll have a good time either way! Many thanks to Sarah McMahon and all of the mem-bers of the Social Committee who spent so much time and energy putting the festival together .

Finally, I would again like to encourage everyone to partici-pate in our Citizens On Patrol "COP" walks . They happen the third Wednesday of every month . Unfortunately, attendance has been low at recent walks -- so much so that a recent walk was canceled . The walks are a very nice time to get to know your police officers, your neighborhood and your neighbors . So, please, get out and walk!

Clean neighbors - Please pick up after your dog, both on the street when you are walking him and in your own backyard . Pet waste that is allowed to accumulate in your yard is unsanitary and unsightly to you and your neighbors . Please also keep the property in front of and around your house clean and free from trash . Use a broom and dustpan to pick up trash and throw it away . Squirting the trash with a hose just clogs up storm drains and pushes that trash in front of another neighbor’s house . Remember that being a considerate and clean neighbor is good for the entire neigh-borhood .

Tennis balls needed - Francis Scott Key School #76 is in need of new or used tennis balls . The balls are put on the legs of chairs to protect the floors and to keep the chil-dren from injury when the chairs are put on top of the desks at the end of the day and taken down the next morning . If you have any tennis balls that you can donate please drop them by the school office . Abandoned vehicles - The City is aggressively cracking down on abandoned vehicles left on public or pri-vate property . Vehicles left in alleys, empty lots and on our streets by irresponsible car-owners will be addressed through this program . These vehicles are unsightly and hazardous . Removing these hazards and eyesores will make Baltimore’s communities safer and cleaner . Please report any abandoned vehicles to 311 .

Make-a-Wish Fundraiser - Harbor Que BBQ & Catering and Under Armour will be sponsoring a fundrais-ing BBQ luncheon Thursday, October 8 on the Tide Point promenade to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation . Lunch will be 11 a .m . - 2:30 p .m . Tickets ($10) will be available at Harbor Que or at the Knights of Columbus Hall . Menu includes Carolina pulled pork sandwich, smokey baked beans, creamy Carolina cole slaw and chips .

Boxed lunches - Available at the Knights of Columbus hall every Wednesday from 10:30 a .m . - 4 p .m . beginning Sept . 9 . Upcoming menus: 10/7- Sliced roast beef, mashed potatoes & gravy, vegetable . 10/14- Maryland fried chicken, potato salad, vegetable . Halloween Murder Mystery - Put the fun back in funeral . Do Or Die Mysteries presents "Death Expo," an audience-participation comic murder mystery on Halloween night at Riverside Stage . Join undertakers, coffin-makers,

gravediggers, fashion embalmers, shroud couturiers and tombstone poets as they plan the first-ever Death Expo to promote the business of death . Can you figure out who's at the bottom of this cemetery "plot?" Be there on Saturday, October 31 at 8 p .m . Tickets are $15, with devilishly deli-cious refreshments at dirt-cheap prices . Come in costume and win a prize . Call 410-837-0971 or visit www .MusicalArtistsTheatre .com to make your reservations now . Riverside Stage, a nonprofit neighborhood arts project of Musical Artists Theatre and Salem Lutheran Church, is located near Riverside Park at 1530 Battery Ave . Free park-ing with permit obtainable at door .

Dance - Knights of Columbus Memories Dance is Saturday, October 24, 7-11 p .m . Live band & dinner buffet provided by Stewart Catering & adult drink service included with ticket . Tickets are $22 .00 each . Contact Ernie Hoffa @ (410) 336-6375 or the Knights of Columbus Hall @ (410) 244-0690 .

The following is a letter LPCA President Tony Vittoria sent to Department of Transportation Director Alfred Foxx, Police Commissioner Fred Bealefeld and other officials regarding the neighborhood’s concern about the number of races routed through Locust Point and the disruptions it has been causing. The letter was originally sent in July and then again in September when the neighborhood learned that the route of the Baltimore Running Festival on October 10 would close Fort Avenue and the Key Highway Extension. As of mid-Septem-ber, the LPCA has received no reply from any of the officials to whom the letter was sent.

July 21, 2009

Re: Running races in Locust Point peninsula

Dear Commissioner Bealefeld and Director Foxx, I am the president of the Locust Point Civic Association and I am writing about a recurring problem in my neighborhood. The Locust Point community continues to suffer from the multitude of running races that are conducted through the peninsula. We are completely baffled as to where the problem lies but, inevitably, all access into and out of the neighborhood is cut off for extended peri-ods of time. It is our understanding that the plans for the various races allows for ingress/egress access, but somewhere in the implementation of that plan, something goes awry. I am enclosing for your review a copy of an e-mail string from two residents of the neighborhood (one of whom is the vice president of Civic Association), as well as an email and letter from Reverend Annette Chappell of the Church of the Redemption. These are merely examples of the complaints that we get follow-ing races running races in the neighborhood.

Ultimately, the races cannot use both Fort Avenue and any portion of Key Highway East -- even the very short portion between Woodall Street and the intersection between Key Highway and Key Highway East. Otherwise, all access into and out of the neighborhood is cut off.

Any help that you two gentlemen can provide in resolving this untenable situation would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely, Anthony F. Vittoria President Locust Point Civic Association

Pet Pointers: National Pet Wellness Monthby Jill Shook, DMVCityPets Veterinary Care and Wellness

October is National Pet Wellness Month . This is a pro-gram sponsored by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Fort Dodge Animal Health and VPI Pet Insurance . The program is designed to educate pet owners on the importance of twice yearly wellness exams, disease prevention and pet health insurance .

Why twice-a-year wellness exams? Pets age much faster than humans, especially larger breed dogs . Therefore, health problems can occur over a much short-er period of time . Wellness exams every six months, for the life of your pet, can help catch diseases earlier when they are easier to correct or manage . Wellness exams consist of a full physical exam as well as discussion of any physical or behavioral changes your pet may be experiencing . Further tests such as bloodwork or radio-graphs may be recommended based on history, exam findings, or the age of your pet .

Disease prevention is obviously another important part of your pet’s health . Pet wellness programs include vac-cinations, heartworm preventatives, flea and tick preven-tatives and controlling intestinal parasites . There are core vaccines that all dogs and cats should receive regardless of lifestyle . However, there are other vaccinations that

are recommended based on an individual animal’s risk of exposure . Your veterinarian can help design an appropri-ate vaccination protocol for your pet . Routine fecal screenings and deworming for intestinal parasites is also important . In addition to causing health problems for animals, some intestinal parasites can be transmitted to people . Monthly heartworm and flea and tick preventa-tives given year-round are also a vital part of a pet’s well-ness program .

Pet health insurance has become much more popular in the past few years . Despite the increasing interest though, only one to two percent of the nation’s pets are insured . There are many companies that offer pet health insurance as well as various policies and plans to choose from . Pet health insurance helps to ensure that you can provide the best medical care for your pet . There is nothing worse than having to make a decision between personal financ-es and the health and well being of your pet .

As everyone knows prevention is the best medicine . While we are all looking for ways to cut costs in the cur-rent economy; the money spent for preventative and well-ness care now will save you money in the future . So if your pet hasn’t seen their veterinarian in the past six months, it’s time for a wellness visit . For more informa-tion about pet wellness programs as well as pet insurance contact your veterinarian and visit www .npwm .com .
