St Pappins Church is undergoing an a r c h a e o l o g i c a l investigation, to ensure that no human remains are buried in the sacred grounds before any restoration work or building can commence at the site on Ballymun Road.

Recently, the Ballymun Concrete News reported that the church had been vandalised and it is now hoped that with work commencing shortly, the building will at last be saved from destruction. Woodgreen builders,

recently received planning permission to build a private nursing home adjacent to the historic building and renovate the church. However, before any work can commence, an archaeological digging has to take place to ensure that no remains are interred on the site.

According to Joe Kenny of Woodgreen builders, in their initial digging, nothing of significance has been found. He indicated that at the request of Dublin Corporation’s city

archaeologicalist, an archaeological appraisal of the monument located at the rear of St Pappins is required.

Night after night the audiences were treated to spectacular entertainment as the performers went through their professional like paces. Dancing, singing, comedy sketches, acting, playing instruments, poetry among other great acts, thrilled the audiences to standing ovations.

The axis centre stage may never see the likes of this brilliant performance again, as most of the cast had little or no experience in acting or performing before a live audience. This once again, is Ballymun at its best. Celebrate is about all the activists, agencies, organisations and groups in Ballymun voluntarily coming together to celebrate on stage,

a new beginning for Ballymun with the promised regeneration of the area. All these volunteers worked very hard rehearsing to make sure the performances on the night were perfect. Of course not to forget those people who worked hard backstage to ensure the show’s success.

The performers provided their own costumes with the exception of the multicoloured waistcoats, which added a spectacular colour on stage. Video images of the old and new incoming Ballymun, were depicted on screen as the performers gave their all on stage. The audience also joined in at the finale, as the final chorus of ‘Celebrate’, a

song written especially for the show, ended a very powerful stage production.

The success is all down to the cast who came through brilliantly on the night. Celebrate is an initiative created by Maria and Jenny Place in co-operation with axis.

Ballymun was celebrating big time at Axis recently, when over 100 artists made up from community groups and people living and working in the area, put on a powerful performance of ‘Celebrate’ ( a new beginning for Ballymun) for three nights to packed houses in the axis 200 seated theatre.

On a cold but clear moonlit night, the firework display lit up the Ballymun sky with a rainbow of electric colours to the amazement of the onlookers.

The day began in the Ballymun shopping centre with entertainment, face painting and local people and young children dressed in their Halloween outfits. Later that evening hundreds of people gathered at the shopping centre and marched on

Coultry to the sounds of the Samba band. This was followed by a Halloween hop at the axis centre.

Ballymun Gardai, said they were very pleased with the way the whole event was carefully planned with safety in mind.

Inspector Gabriel McIntyre (Ballymun

Garda Station) said: “I am delighted that so much care was taken to ensure proper safety measures were put in place. I want to thank all involved in the planning and co-ordinating of the firework display,” he said.

The event was planned and co-ordinated by the Axis centre and the Ballymun Festival Steering Group.

The newspapers success was recently publicised in both the Sunday Business Post and the Northside People.

The axis café-bar, buzzed as an energised 200 people including media guests, Kieran Fagan, (Irish Times), Sean Boyne, (Sunday World) Aidan Kelly and colleagues, (Northside People) and Ciara Feehly, (RTE) celebrated the

success of the Ballymun Concrete News. Terrific entertainment was voluntarily provided by many local bands and singers who enjoy the Ballymun Concrete News.

Brainchild of Ballymun Journalist Seamus Kelly, the Ballymun Concrete News, pledges a positive stance in it’s editorial, enhancing the profile of the Ballymun and Poppintree area.

Seamus Kelly Editor and owner of the Ballymun Concrete News, three years ago began with a one page news-sheet and now runs the colourful tabloid newspaper with a huge circulation. What keeps Seamus going, is people stopping him in the street and telling him how they enjoy the newspaper.

A number of guest speakers paid tribute to Seamus Kelly’s success.

Sean O’Cionnaith, Ballymun Workers party Representative and Chairperson of Shangan Estate Forum, congratulated Seamus Kelly for “reporting facts in a responsible manner.”

Sean Boyne Political Editor of the Sunday World, joked that all a journalist needed was to be “rat like cunning, have an applaudable manner and have a little literary ability. “This does not apply to Seamus who is one of natures gentlemen,” he said.

Ciaran Murray managing director of Ballymun Regeneration Ltd, said:. “It takes trials and tribulations to progress an enterprise to such enormous success, a significant contribution to the New Ballymun. “It proves that good news stories are as equally successful as the negative stuff, and Seamus highlights the energy and vibrancy within the community, which will entice potential developers to see the people in a positive light and support its growth.”

Hugh Greaves, a representative of the Ballymun Regional Youth Centre and Local Drug Task Force, said that with forty youth projects on-going, “the Concrete News is a constructive resource for Ballymun.”

Councillor Noel Ahern, T.D, Chairperson of the Dublin North West Area Committee commented that Seamus Kelly is always prepared to research thoroughly his subject and deliver his work diligently.

Inspector Joe McKeown (on behalf of the Ballymun Gardai) stated, “I’ve often spoken to Seamus over the phone offering him stories but he turns them down because they are not positive.”

Victoria McElligott resident and founder of the Ballymun Animals Caring Association, commented, “The pen is mightier than the sword and it’s wonderful to see a grass roots person achieving and reporting the positive news that is an integral part of Ballymun.”

One of the many talented performers on the night, Gavin Hughes from Silloge Gardens said. “I now get the concrete News instead of the Herald. I might get my picture taken and get discovered.”

Seamus expressed his thanks to the Ballymun Concrete News supporters. “I would like to thank Dublin Corporation and all who loyally supported the Ballymun Concrete News over the past three years. Thank you to the Ballymun Enterprise Services, the Ballymun Partnership, and Department of Social Welfare, for the funding for information pack.

I wish also to thank Youthreach for an outstanding backdrop, and the many talented entertainers on the night.” He also thanked the staff at axis “for looking after the guests so well at the launch,” he said.

Be aware, think TABS (Think act and be Safe) With the current ongoing road construction in the Ballymun area there will continue to be disruptions and inconvenience to traffic and pedestrians.While major roads realignments are being carried out, it is important for local residents, to take extra care when crossing the roads and only use designated crossings.

As this project is being carried out in a major town with almost 20,000 residents (of which 6,000 are children) and existing dwellings in places, this makes it difficult to carry this work out safely without the co-operation of local people.

While there are a number of areas, which are of concern to ourselves and local residents, we are doing all we possibly can to provide the best possible safety measures in the interests of residents and our workers.

It is equally important, for parents to instruct their children of the dangers of playing anywhere near construction areas.We are very concerned that numbers of children have been seen climbing over protective fencing and playing in dangerous areas.To this end, we employed Security Personnel to keep children away from construction areas, but their powers are limited.

We urge all residents, in Ballymun to assist us by working with us and perhaps suggesting ways, that together in the interests of safety, we can minimise the dangers at construction sites.

We would also ask local schools, to keep reminding children to be extra careful when going to and coming from school. In particular to use only the designated footpaths and crossings.

“Young minds need to be engaged and stimulated positively, and centres like the Ballymun Central Youth Facility provide that opportunity,” said the Minister.

Ballymun Regional Youth Resource (BRYR) programme manager Donnacadh Hurley, stated that the aim of the CYC is to open phase one for at least 12 hours a day seven days a week. “That’s a target of over 84 hours a week. The building and its resources, are for any young Ballymun person.”

“The building has been operational since June this year and in June/July it got a baptism of fire, through the Summer Buzz programme run by, Ballymun Regional and Resource Centre,” he said.

Phase two is expected to completed by next winter and aims to have over

1,000 new members in the new building. Some of the exciting plans in phase two will be: a youth café/ a 25 station Internet Café, youth gym, club rooms, art and training rooms and much more exciting features.

“Seven special welcomes will replace the seven towers” are the opening lines of a CD launched by Manzone at the Axis Theatre Ballymun last month.

As Andy O’Donnell - lead vocalist with Manzone-, took to the floor, the audience revelled in the ballad that now has become a theme song for the Ballymun Regeneration Ltd, project.

The Seven Flowers of Ballymun was produced by the Ballymun Men’s Centre in collaboration with girls from The Virgin Mary and other local Schools, followed by live entertainment from Esquire who rocked the boards while Louise Fleming and Kelley McGillivray danced their spiced version of “It’s Raining Men.”

He alleged also that with the introduction of decimal currency in the early seventies, some profiteering was made due to the changeover. “As we don’t want a repeat of the huge profits made by some business when decimal currency was introduced in 1972, a price freeze will

The Euro is due to be introduced on the first of January 2002, and the transition will be fully complete by April.

“In the interests of fair play a price freeze should be introduced so that people will be able to determine that nothing is being added on to the prices during the transition,” said Mr O’ Cionnaith.

Editorial Celebrate Ballymun was a great show and it shows the people of Ballymun are looking forward to their new homes and town. The sooner the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) gives the go ahead for full construction to go ahead, the quicker we will really celebrate. No more delays please, while health and safety is a top priority, it is equally important that the regeneration of Ballymun gets into full swing again. This is a new beginning for Ballymun and let’s get it right this time.

I want to thank everyone who turned up for the official launch of the Ballymun Concrete News. It was a great night, a complete success and brilliant turnout. Thank you one and all for all your support.

Get writing those positive cheerful letters to the editor, surely you have something positive and cheerful to say about Ballymun. Who knows your letter may be the next winner of £100 in the competition. It’s time we started shouting about the positive events here in Ballymun. This town has a great community spirit and it’s a great place to live and work in.

It’s great we now have a new centre for our youth in Ballymun and I believe, this is just the beginning of better things to come for Ballymun.

I met with An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern T.D at a function recently and when I asked him what he thought of the regeneration of Ballymun he replied: “Ballymun has a great future.” Maybe we need to believe this ourselves, this town has got a great future.

etters to the EditorLDear Editor, I would like to share with you my experience recently of a truly extravagant event, Halloween night in Ballymun. A very positive festival to hit Ballymun over the last few years, this years proving to be even more spectacular.

Halloween night again, amidst the gloom of the city sky.

There was nothing gloomy about Ballymun that night, I’ll tell you the reason why.

A parade of beautiful colours from the shopping centre to Coultry Road.

The Samba band belting out their rhythm to the young and to the old.

The Garda car patrolling keeping us safe on the night.

‘As the crowd carried their hand made sculptures, and their little lantern light.

We arrived on to Coultry Road, Oh what a sight before our eyes.

A collection of beautiful colours lit up our night skies.

Yellow, green, blue, red purple, orange and gold. From the fireworks like a flower, each one did unfold.

Dressed as many characters around the bonfire the kids all stood.

Witches, Dracula, Devils, to even the old favourite Robin Hood.

Everyone stood in amazement, eyes opened wide. The music played in the background, some emotional eyes been dried.

As “I’ll tell me ma” rang out, and people started to descend. I felt such a sense of loss that such an excellent event had to end.

The Gardai have no sympathy with drivers who knowingly break the law by drinking and driving, speeding and driving dangerously. You will eventually end up in hospital, the morgue or facing serious charges and fines and perhaps even prison.

In his recent statement Pat Carey also reinforced the Governments strong commitment to the regeneration of Ballymun.

He states that the £1.3million funding, will allow Dublin Corporation “To proceed with specific elements of these schemes in conjunction with the regeneration of the Main Street of Ballymun so that future disruption to this area can be avoided. The proposed works will cost £1,286, 356 including VAT,” said Alderman Carey.

Pat indicated that the overall North Fringe Sewer, is intended to service housing and industrial

development along its route. “The North Fringe Watermain, is required to provide additional water supplies for planned housing, industrial and commercial development along the North Fringe of the city,” he said.

On the Governments commitment to the regeneration he stated: “The commitment of the Government to the redevelopment of Ballymun remains as strong as ever. I am determined to ensure that this project is developed in full and on time so that Ballymun can take its rightful place as a shining example of a vibrant community, thriving at ease with itself,” said Pat Carey. £1.3Million Fianna Fails Pat Carey T.D, has welcomed the £1.3million funding recently approved by Government Minister Noel Dempsey T.D. to fund sections of the North Fringe Sewer and Watermain schemes as part of the Ballymun Regeneration Ltd Main Street contract, under the Water Services Investment Programme.
