2015 PROJECT EASTER BUNNY CAPITAL DISTRICT – Floydwarriors.com “Helping Families Cope with Cancer, One Household at a Time” is very pleased to announce its 6th annual run of Project Easter Bunny. Floy-dwarriors.com founder Lisa Morahan began this effort af-ter experiencing Easter Sunday in 2009 too ill to make one basket up for her son while in the middle of chemotherapy treatment. In 2010 enough toys and candy were collected to make up 100 baskets, 135 in 2011, 190 in 2012, 225 in 2013 and 290 in 2014. Our goal is to collect enough new small toys and candy for 350 baskets this year and add yet another on-cology center to our list of glad recipients. Several area can-cer organizations and hospitals caring for cancer patients will receive this year’s bounty so children of those in treat-ment will have a nice big basket to open on Easter morning. Locations to receive baskets hope to include The CR Wood Center at Glens Falls Hospital, Samaritan Hospital in Troy, The Mollie Wilmot Radiation Oncology Center at Saratoga Hos-pital, The Community Hospice of Saratoga, The Hope Club in Latham, New York Oncology Hematology of Albany and Rexford, CRAAB, To Life! and families helped by floydwarriors.com. We’re inviting everyone to join us in pledging to pray one Mystery of the Rosary each day during this time,” said Josie Uhlinger. “Our goal is to reach 33,000 Rosaries prayed to Our Lady imploring her son’s di-vine mercy to save this world that is now in crisis.” Noting the Rosary may be prayed “at any time at your convenience, in-dividually or with your family or friends,” Mrs. Uhlinger said the key is “to pray the Rosary devoutly from the heart, as Our Lady instructed the children at Fatima to do in 1917.” A display showing weekly progress of completed Rosaries will be posted on the bulletin at the back of the Church together with a pamphlet titled Pray the Rosary Daily -- which details how to say the Rosary. The community is also invited to join in Our Lady Queen of Peace prayer meetings on March 3, 17 and 31. For more information, Josie Uhlinger at 885-9620 or Cheryl Smith at 587-9856.

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

COMMUNITY ALLIESBALLSTON SPA - Community Allies is a collaboration be-tween citizens and local organizations working together to end bullying, harassment, violence, and internet dangers in the Ballston area. Our goal is to be a resource to the com-munity. By obtaining information from the public and as-sessing needs, we have formulated responses to those needs through mobilizing residents and community organizations and have developed successful awareness and prevention strategies to end abuse. To become involved in Community Allies activities: Call DVRC at (518) 583-0280 [email protected] www.dvrcsaratoga.org/ca_info.hmtl. Proj-ect Funder: New York State Department of Health.

Pete Bardunias, President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County

Chamber of Southern Saratoga County and Walmart Find Opportunity

To Promote Local Small BusinessRecently, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County and Walmart announced a plan to place a local com-munity information kiosk inside of the proposed new store planned for the intersection of Routes 50 and 67 in Ballston Spa. This announcement has no bearing on whether the store is actually built – that decision will be made by the Town of Ballston in accordance with its zoning ordinances. If the store does come to our community, this new kiosk will represent a unique op-portunity to share information with both residents and visitors as they come to shop, and it is my sincere belief that the kiosk will benefit the family owned, independent business owners of downtown Ballston Spa as well as nearby farms and other area attractions. One of the Chamber’s hallmark programs is the Saratoga County Community De-velopment Program, which has been successful at integrating and aligning large and small businesses, plus other community organizations, government officials, students and concerned citizens to work together on projects to benefit local communities. Successful examples include the Historic Lock 19 stabilization and bridge construction project, the cleanup at the Mechanicville Train Station, and (for two consecutive years) renovations inside of Brookside Museum and an oral history video project by local students. Because of the other challenges that a

large store such as Walmart poses to the Ballston commu-nity, this project has some unique complexities, but at the same time the significant interest in its outcome poses an opportunity to work together to ensure that Ballston Spa continues to have its distinctive, charming character that is so attractive to residents and visitors alike. We will look for additional opportunities to further enhance the quality of life for all who call Ballston their home. To share ideas for possible future community development projects please email me at [email protected] .

DON’T FORGET HEADLIGHTS WHEN PERFORMING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

(MS) — Veteran and even novice drivers understand the importance of visibility when they get behind the wheel of their vehicles. When visibility is not an issue, drivers can more easily see their fellow motorists and better anticipate potentially dangerous situations. But when visibility is compromised, drivers and their passengers are vulnerable to a host of dangers, including inclement weather and aggressive motorists.

Many things can affect drivers’ visibility on the road, but those who take a proactive approach to improving their visibility can put themselves in a better position to handle any negative situations that may arise. One of the ways to do just that is to pay more attention to your headlights. Often overlooked when performing routine vehicle maintenance, headlights must be maintained to ensure optimal visibility for drivers.

The following are a few ways drivers can improve the performance of their headlights to make their vehicles safer for themselves and their passengers.

• Pay attention to the headlights’ output. Perhaps the most noticeable indicator of an aging headlight is its light output. As bulbs start to dim, drivers may find themselves struggling to see during twilight and at night. That difficulty is not necessarily because drivers’ own vision is failing, but may be a result of aging bulbs whose light output is gradually reduced by the effects of humidity, electrical resistance and filament fatigue. Drivers who notice their head-lights are not producing as much light as they once did should know that reduced output is a telltale sign of aging bulbs that need to be replaced.

• Say “so long” to the status quo. Recognizing dimming bulbs is just the first step toward im-proving the performance of your headlights. The next step is for drivers to recognize that all headlight bulbs are not created equal. Instead of replacing existing bulbs with the same type of bulbs provided by their vehicle’s manufacturer, drivers can vastly improve their visibility by

upgrading to a bulb designed to provide more light than the standard halogen bulbs found in many of today’s vehicles. Leading automotive lighting manufacturer Philips produces a range of Upgrade Headlight Bulbs that offer up to 100 percent more light on the road than standard halogen bulbs. That’s a significant benefit to drivers, as motorists’ visual acuity is reduced by 70 percent at night, when statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate 49 percent of all fatal accidents occur. The NHTSA also notes that the fatality rate per mile driven at night is roughly three times as high as it is during daylight hours.

• Find the right fit. The right headlight bulb can dramatically improve visibility when driving at night, but what’s good for the goose is not always good for the gander. That’s because motor-

ists drive for various reasons and on various roads, so the right bulb for seniors who don’t of-ten take to the highways will not necessarily be the best fit for commuters who routinely drive long distances. Philips makes a headlight bulb for every type of driver, and each Upgrade Headlight Bulb creates a better beam pattern that is dramatically longer than that provided by standard halogen lights, ensuring drivers can safely see no matter how accustomed they are to driving at night.

• Let there be light. Regardless of how effective a bulb has the potential to be, drivers who don’t routinely clean their headlights will continue to have their visibility compromised. Cer-tain preventative measures can help drivers address headlight issues before they appear, en-suring their visibility is not compromised. When checking your oil in the driveway or even when you’re filling up at the gas station, take a few moments to inspect your headlights and address any issues that arise as soon as possible. The Philips Headlight Restoration Kit includes a post-treatment that provides long-lasting UV protection for headlight lenses. The kit also in-cludes a cleaner/polish and restorer/protector so drivers can restore their headlight lenses to “like new” quality while increasing visibility and reducing glare in as little as 30 minutes. Such quick and simple maintenance can ensure your headlights are performing optimally.

DID YOU KNOW?A vehicle identification number, or VIN, is more than just a unique code that distinguishes a car from other vehicles. The VIN can actually tell drivers things about the car as well. By examining the VIN, a driver can learn where his or her car was assembled, the model year of the vehicle, the manufacturer of the vehicle and even the model of the vehicle. How to read a VIN is not something drivers learn in educational courses, so those who want to learn how to decode their VIN can contact the manufacturer of their vehicles. Understanding how to read a VIN can help car buyers determine if the car they are buying is stolen or if the seller is attempt-ing to mislead them in another way. In addition, when drivers have the correct VIN number for a vehicle, they can use that to gain access to a vehicle history report on the car or truck. Such reports will indicate the vehicle’s ownership and accident history, further protecting buyers from purchasing a lemon or stolen vehicle.

SIMPLE DEFENSIVE DRIVING TECHNIQUES ANYONE CAN EMPLOY

Driving defensively is a great way for motorists to reduce their risks of accident, maintain their vehicles over the long haul and save money on their auto insurance. But driving can be habit-forming, and over time many drivers develop habits that can compromise their safety on the road.

No driver wants to make roads less safe, and many may just need to reacquaint themselves with the following defensive driving techniques they learned way back when they first started driving as teenagers.

• Avoid distractions. Older drivers didn’t have too many things to distract them from the road, but nowadays it’s easy to be distracted whether you’re driving alone on an empty road or sitting in rush hour traffic with dozens of your fel-low commuters. That’s because today’s vehicles may be equipped with televisions, smartphone hookups and high-quality sound systems that can take drivers’ attention away from the road. Drivers may even be bringing additional dis-tractions with them into their vehicles. When getting behind the wheel, keep your stereo speakers low and turn off all of your devices so you aren’t tempted to check emails or text messages while driving.

• Don’t be in such a hurry. Perhaps the most effective defen-sive driving technique is to slow down when on the road. That’s easier said than done, especially for commuters who are running late and trying to get to the office on time. But making a conscious effort to slow down, even if you are a few minutes late for work or running late for an appointment, can mean the difference between getting into an accident or staying safe on the road. If you know you are running late, don’t try to compensate by driving fast. Instead, call ahead to let whoever might be waiting for you know that you will be a few minutes late.

• Don’t lane hop. Frequent switching between lanes can make other drivers nervous, increasing the risk of an acci-dent. In addition, sudden or frequent lane changes can make it difficult for drivers to maintain their focus on the road and see more than a few cars ahead of them. Drivers who have been on the road for a long time may feel confident in their abilities to quickly switch between lanes, but fellow motor-ists may find such shifting distracting and begin to drive er-ratically as a result. Stay in one lane as long as possible, and only pass cars on the left.

• Don’t respond to aggressive drivers. If a fellow driver is driv-ing aggressively, slow down and let them pass or pull over and let them get far away from you before you return to the roadway. Studies have indicated that road rage incidents es-calate when drivers make eye contact with one another. Even if you are not at fault, it’s up to you to avoid a potentially dan-gerous situation and protect yourself and your passengers.

Defensive driving techniques reduce the risk of accidents and help to keep cars running strong over the long haul. Driv-ers can benefit from periodically revisiting such techniques and practicing them on roadways.

WHY A CLEAN AIR FILTER IS IMPORTANT

IN YOUR VEHICLEMotorists routinely check their tires for proper infla-tion, top off engine fluid lev-els and maintain oil change schedules. But some drivers do not understand the im-portance of keeping engine air filters clean.

Engine air filters are a rela-tively inexpensive vehicle part, but they perform a very important job. For every gal-lon of gas a car burns, it uses the equivalent of 12,000 gal-lons of air, and that air must be filtered to help keep an engine clean.

Air filters catch all of the dust, grime, insects, sap, leaves, and any other debris that may get sucked up past the air intake of the vehicle’s grill and into the engine it-self. Without the air filter, those contaminants may compromise the engine, causing corrosion and abra-sion. If the air filter in the en-gine becomes too dirty and is not changed regularly, the engine is starved of air.

Clean air filters allow just the right ratio of air to fuel to en-able the engine to function properly. Engines need ade-quate air for the combustion process to take place. With-out the proper combustion levels, vehicles cannot per-form properly or efficiently and the engine may burn more gas or get fewer miles to the gallon. A dirty filter

also can rob an engine of power. Drivers may notice sluggish acceleration.

Air filters also can get so dirty that the engine stalls completely. But such a problem only de-velops after considerable neglect.

Air filters may not need to be replaced at each and every oil change service call. Many techni-cians advise replacing the filter every 8,000 miles. However, drivers who live in particularly dry and dusty regions may need to replace filters more frequently.

Mechanics can often detect when an air filter needs to be replaced. If he or she notices the air filter is particularly dirty, then it’s probably time to replace it. Replacing the filter is a relatively inexpensive repair for the amount of performance and peace of mind a new filter provides.

Elementary 8 Puppies

MaggieThis little girl is listed as a collie mix.

She is 9-10 weeks old, has two sets of shots and has been vet checked and wormed.

She loves ids and gets along well with other dogs. She was found with two other puppies in the

woods, abandoned, down south.

There are still two of these puppies left and they would love

a forever home. They are very friendly, about 12-14 weeks old and up to date on shots. Their

other siblings have found home and now they are still waiting. They will be super handsome dogs when grown.

These babies were found on the grounds of an elementary school down south. They are 8-9 weeks old and have been

wormed, vet checked and had first shots. They are good old fashioned

American mix breeds. But they have wonderful little dispositions.

SIMPLE WAYS TO SAVE AT THE PUMPThe cost of fuel dipped in 2014, but drivers are still looking for ways to spend less at the pump. For many drivers, that means driving less. Driving less will save money, and doing so also reduces fuel consumption and contributes to fewer emissions entering the air, both of which can benefi t the en-vironment.

But many drivers are unable to drive less, as commitments to work and family require them to get behind the wheel more

often than they might prefer. Such drivers may be looking for ways to reduce their fuel costs, and fortunately there are several ways to do just that.

• Reconsider your choice of fuel. Many of today’s auto manu-facturers now design their vehicles so they can run smoothly on regular unleaded gas, which is typically listed as “87 oc-tane” at fi lling stations. That’s important to know, as regular gas is often considerably less expensive than alternatives that are higher octanes. Many drivers may even choose regu-

lar unleaded, but opt for premium gas every third or fourth trip, feeling that the higher octane fuel every so often will in-crease performance of older engines. But many engines are designed to run smoothly and effi cient on low-octane fuel, meaning it’s unnecessary to choose premium gas, even if you only do so once in a blue moon. Read your vehicle’s owner’s manual to determine the best fuel for your car.

• Buy when the time is right. Prices at fi lling stations fl uctuate on a daily basis, so unless your car is running on empty, avoid fi lling up when the prices seem especially high. Some pa-tience may pay off with several dollars in savings, and those savings can add up to a signifi cant amount of money over time.

• Become a less aggressive driver. Drivers with hectic sched-ules tend to be more aggressive when behind the wheel. But driving aggressively is unsafe and potentially costly. When driven at speeds that exceed 55 miles per hour, vehicles lose fuel economy. According to the California Energy Commis-sion’s Consumer Energy Center, driving 55 miles per hour in-stead of 75 miles per hour can reduce fuel costs by as much as 75 percent.

• Remove unnecessary weight. A car trunk might seem like a great place to keep your golf clubs, and it may be tempt-ing to leave that roof rack on top of your car after a recent camping trip, but such unnecessary cargo in or on your car makes it harder for the car to get from point A to point B. That forces the car to consume more fuel. Unless your immediate plans include hitting the links or hunkering down at a nearby campsite, remove unnecessary weight from the car so your next trip to the gas station is less expensive.

The cost of fuel can make trips to the fi lling station into costly excursions. But drivers willing to reconsider conventional wisdom and change their driving habits can save substantial amounts of money over time.

WARNING SIGNS A TIRE IS ABOUT

TO GO FLATFew drivers will be fortu-nate enough to go their entire driving lives without encountering at least one fl at tire. Flat tires range from the inconvenient fl ats, which may interrupt a road trip or make drivers late for work or an appointment, to more dangerous blowouts, which can compromise the safety of drivers, their passengers and anyone else on the road when the tire gives out.

But as inconvenient or dan-gerous as fl ats or blowouts can be, they also can be pre-vented more often than not. Tires often produce warning signs that a fl at or blowout is about to emerge, so drivers who want to avoid such un-fortunate developments can inspect their tires for the fol-lowing signs.

• Varying wear: Tires should exhibit the same type of

wear. The wear on front tires and back tires may diff er, but one front tire should have the same amount of wear as the other and the same goes for the back tires. Un-even tread on tires indicates that the tire with more wear could be about to go out.

• Worn tread: Even driv-ers who know little about cars can typically recognize when tire tread has worn down to the point where the tire is a safety risk. But driv-ers who are unsure can em-ploy the quarter test. Insert a quarter into the tread of the tire, with George Washing-ton’s head upright. If you can see the hairline of the United States’ fi rst president, then

you need to replace the tire. Perform this test on each of your vehicle’s four tires.

• Low pressure: Drivers who do not routinely check their tire pressure are more likely to endure a fl at or blowout than those who regularly make sure their tires are at the manufacturer-recom-mended pressure, which can be found in a vehicle owner’s manual or by call-ing the tire manufacturer or visiting their website. An underinfl ated tire is under stress that can cause the tire to blowout. In addition, poorly infl ated tires force en-gines to work harder, which negatively aff ects a car’s fuel effi ciency.

• Vibration: A car that vi-brates excessively may do so because tires are damaged. Poor suspension is another cause of excessive vibra-tion. Whatever is behind a car that is vibrating, drivers should immediately take the car to their mechanic for an inspection.

• Physical damage to the tire: Sometimes tires exhibit physical damage like bulges or cuts, and such signs could mean a fl at tire or blowout is just around the corner. Tires that exhibit such physical damage need to be replaced immediately.

Flat tires and blowouts can prove both scary and incon-venient. Drivers who want to avoid such problems should routinely inspect their tires for indicators that a fl at or blowout is likely to occur.

Routinely checking tire pressure and infl ating underinfl ated tires is one way drivers can reduce their risk of fl at tires and blowouts.

What do you like to do with your free time? Relax, read, take a nap... We doubt you answered “Do my taxes!” The IRS esti-mates that between accumulating necessary paperwork, navigating current tax laws and fi lling out the required forms, the average taxpayer in the US will spend approximately 16 hours preparing their 2014 tax return. In some cases the time can well exceed this estimate. Accutax Income Tax Services is glad to help you understand the complex tax laws that make up our current tax system. In addition to helping you pay as little tax as possible, we can also make suggestions which will reduce your taxes going forward or help you save more for the future. Tom Kubiak, an IRS Enrolled Agent with more than 20 years tax preparation experience, is the owner of Accutax, and is always willing to help local taxpayers work to reduce the amount of tax they are paying. “Often”, says Tom, “simple deductions are overlooked which could result in signifi cant tax savings. Combine the tax savings with increasing your retirement contributions and you will make a measurable change on your personal fi nancial picture.”

Tom and his associates at Accutax are glad to look over your situation and make some suggestions to help you save. Although many think that using a tax preparer can be expensive, Tom is proud to charge less than the major fi rms and often his fee is not much more than would be paid to a software company for a self-prepared return. Additionally, Tom and his staff are available year round and are happy to offer advice or tax planning ‘on the house’. Tom says: “We never charge our clients for consultations. In fact, we encourage them to make an appointment and talk to us before they make any fi nancial decisions.”

Call 893-2683 and make an appointment now for a free review of your last three year’s tax returns. They will let you know if any changes to those returns would benefi t you. Or make an appointment to have your 2014 tax return prepared.
