Ballito

Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal’s northern coastline, lies Simbithi, a 430 hectare Eco-Estate. Simbithi Eco-Estate is a natural, coastal paradise

with dense, indigenous riverine vegetation, lush valley wetlands, undulating hills and distant, breathtaking vistas.

Simbithi is situated 30 minutes north of South Africa’s third largest city, Durban, on the Kwazulu-Natal coast. It’s a tranquil hideaway nestled between the coastal towns of Ballito and Salt Rock. The new King Shaka International Airport is only 10 minutes away. This has made the North Coast much more accessible for commuters, foreign tourists and investors.

The Amphitheatre is comprised of 15 free-standing

development within the highly sought after Simbithi Eco Estate. It is beautifully positioned on an elevated site and borders on a green belt.

PRINTINGdna Print (Pty) ltd.

I’ve always been a little worried about the statement

that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. The mere

the fact that old people try to disprove it (you need

to settle on your own definition of ‘old’ here) doesn’t

make it any less true for the majority of us as we get

a little older each year and more set in our ways.

Why am I worried about it? Well, let’s just say that in

a group of people I would more than likely be picked

out as part of the older crowd, and less so as one of

the younger group.

This got me thinking that it takes more than a couple

days to create a new habit. A month sounded like

the perfect amount of time to me. It’s also nicely

packaged, with set start and end dates, which makes

it perfect to use when trying to change a habit — well

at least it seems so to me.

Taking my concern and this newly-found, nicely

packaged ‘container’ to work with, I decided to make

the month of May (which is also my birthday month)

the month of positive thinking. I’m not talking about

the inspirational quote, Robin Sharma, walking-on-

fire type of positive thinking, but rather the mind-set

that catches you regularly drifting towards the

negative and changes it. In a society where focusing

on issues and concerns has become the norm and is

almost all-consuming in conversations, as well in the

way that we engage with people, I decided that I’d try

change the way that I saw it.

My kids will tell you that I have a tendency to be

grumpy. I don’t think that that’s really true, but

apparently all grumpy people say that. I feel that

grumpy happens when you are more focused on the

negative than the positive — almost like the Hulk,

who is always angry, I guess. Anyway, the point is

that for many of us it isn’t a conscious act anymore

— it really has just become how we see the world. I

wanted to change that in myself.

So has it worked? Well the month is almost up and I

can tell you that I’ve been serious about the task of

focusing on the positive and addressing the negative

quickly when it needs to be addressed. It seems to

have made my world a little nicer to be in. There are

still tough days, but they’re easier to handle when I

make sure that the negativity doesn’t consume me. I

have learnt to manage it, sorta like the Hulk, I guess.

It’s worked so well for me that I have decided that

there are another 11 months for me to use, so I’m

picking a behaviour or trait that I’d like to improve for

each of the months and I’m going to give that a bash.

I’ll let you know how it all turns out, but I’m positive

that it’ll turn out great!

Seems that you don’t always have to teach an old dog

new tricks — you just have to remind him how good

he is at the ones he knows!

Till we meet again

God Bless

Battery packs are becoming the talk of the town and it’s no surprise that with the seemingly shocking batteries on smartphones these days, it’s going to be more commonplace for battery packs to become the next “must-have” accessory.

The Lenmar Mutant battery pack, packs a powerful 20,800 mAh, which in non-geeky language means you can charge your smartphone up to 10 times and your iPad/Tablet to 2 full charges. That’s quite a bit of power!

The Lenmar Mutant retails for R1,699 and is available for order online at http://www.geekshop.co.za

SonY Xperia Z2It seems to be a iPhone vs Samsung smartphone war at the moment in South Africa, but too often people overlook the real winners in the Smartphone game.

We recently had the opportunity to attend the launch of the Sony Xperia Z2 which was launched in South Africa last month. The Z2 is the long-awaited upgrade to the Sony Xperia Z1, which had all the bells and whistles including being Waterproof & Dust resistant.

The Z2 doesn’t disappoint either, and has been updated to include a 20.7PM camera that is capable of taking 4K videos. The Z2 is also the first smartphone to offer noise cancelling speaker technology, as well as also being fully water & dust proof with a water rating of up to 1.5m.

If you in the market for a new smartphone and aren’t convinced with the Samsung Galaxy S5 or iPhone 5s, take a look at the Xperia Z2, you won’t be disappointed.

Ballito My town

cherYL peterS Ballito’s fresh-faced, energetic and always bubbly Cheryl Peters, the marketing and communications manager at Enterprise Ilembe, exudes a passion for both her work and her town and, of course, her beloved family. She is an inspiration to many women in business and, all in all, a superb woman to have in your circle! This is Cheryl’s town and this is what she likes to do in it.

eat brunchI don’t often get a chance to indulge in brunch but, when I do, it’s either at Sage Café or Zara’s. I love the ambiance and food, especially at Sage.

Doing something funFor me, fun is doing something that I enjoy, like going for a beauty treatment (massage, hair, nails, etc) or shoe shopping. Now that’s fun and, believe you me, I could try on every shoe in the store. I love every minute of it, but my family don’t — it drives them crazy!

Fave place to eat seafoodWithout a doubt Al Pescatore, where Trevor Wolf knows that the seafood pasta is my ‘usual’ whenever I eat there.

Fave activity on the weekendProbably won’t come as much of a surprise to most, but it would definitely have to be surfing and fishing — just being outdoors!

shopI shop where it’s convenient, so if I am in the vicinity of either the Lifestyle Centre, The Junction or Tiffany’s, that’s where I’ll shop, especially for groceries. For my other shopping, like clothing and shoes (of course), I shop at the Lifestyle Centre or Gateway. I am an impulse buyer so, when I see something that I like, it doesn’t matter what store it is, I will buy it — if I can afford it. My favourite stores locally are White Summer, Lula and Rage and I love the little shops at Burndale in Umhlali.

Go on a romantic dateMy husband and I love ‘date nights’ at Beira Alta or Aqua at Sibiya. The food has to be good or else the date would be ruined! Family outing: We have two teenaged sons, so these days family outings are very challenging as everyone has different interests and the boys consider playing Playstation3 the whole day exciting enough without having to venture out, but when we do agree on an activity for the whole family, it’s usually watching a movie at Gateway or going to the beach (which I hate, by the way). Alternatively, our family outings consist of me watching them (dad and boys) play soccer at Footy.

Grab cocktails with the girlsWe have tried a few venues, but we absolutely love Al Pescatore. Nothing beats just chillaxing on the deck, with its amazing views and, of course, those strawberry daiquiris (virgin for me, please). Oh, and the awesome company…

Fave activity on the weekendProbably won’t come as much of a surprise to most, but it would definitely have to be surfing and fishing — just

Watch the sunsetWatch the sunset? Hmm... I am always on the move, so watching the sunset is a rarity in my life. However, in saying that, I often watch the sunset from the driver’s seat of my car on my way home from work, or from my balcony at home.

Work outI work out at the Lockeroom Health & Fitness with Kaboom Explosive Fitness. Dylan Moran keeps me motivated and makes sure that I attend my sessions, even though I call them ‘torture sessions’. I am not really a work-out/gym fanatic, so I need a personal trainer to keep me in check!

There once was an oysterWhose story I tell,Who found that some sand Had got into his shell. It was only a grain,But it gave him great pain. For oysters have feelingsAlthough they’re so plain.

Now, did he berateThe harsh working of fateThat had brought himTo such a deplorable state?Did he curse at the government,Cry for election,And claim that the sea shouldHave given him protection?

No – he sad to himselfAs he lay on a shell,Since I cannot remove it,I shall try to improve it.Now the years have rolled around,As the years always do,And he came to his ultimateDestiny – stew.

And the small grain of sandThat had bothered him soWas a beautiful pearlAll richly aglow. Now the tale has a moral; For isn’t it grandWhat an oyster can do With a morsel of sand?

What couldn’t we doIf we’d only beginWith some of the thingsThat get under our skin.

I grew up in a sport-obsessed home. Like, as in a healthy obsession. I think… I mean, if it wasn’t rugby, it was cricket. If it wasn’t cricket, it was Formula 1. When you turned on our TV, it was for sport and if you wanted something else, you were quickly overruled. This was my normal growing up and I loved every minute of it.

I also grew up with a dad who loved to watch me play sport. I can’t remember a game that I played when he wasn’t on the side-line shouting words of encouragement. That goes for my mom, too. Where he went, she went — they are awesome like that — and I’m guessing that my story is similar to that of many ‘truly’ South African families. I mean, sport is a part of who we are. Good or bad, it’s in our blood and that ain’t going to change anytime soon. When our team is winning, we’re on a mountain top and when they’re losing — well, let’s not go there.

And so, with sport being such a huge part of our lives, I felt that we could learn something from it today. In every great

team there is a great captain and in every great captain there is an uncanny ability to bring out the best in his or her team. Whenever we think back on the greatest sporting teams, there is always a reference to the ‘leader of the pack’. Always. The truth is that every great team is led by a great leader. As I’ve said, that’s what great leaders do — they bring out the best in their team and, in doing so, everyone gets to share in the joy of winning.

The sad thing is that so many great teams never reach their full potential, often because they fail to listen to the voice of their captain. They choose to follow their own direction rather than the direction of the one who sees the bigger picture. Let me say it like this — a great captain is a powerful gift to any team who wants to perform to its full potential.

Now, talking of great captains, there’s a moment in the Bible where Jesus, the greatest captain to ever live, presents us with an opportunity to be part of a winning

team. In Matthew 7: 24, Jesus says it like this, ‘If anyone hears my words and puts them into practice, they will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock (I know, you’re singing the song already) and when the rains came the house stood firm.’

So this idea of captaincy is also true for our life’s greater purpose. It’s true because God has sent Jesus to be the greatest captain of all time. Not merely for a momentary victory, but for a lifetime of winning. A lifetime of living in the greater purpose that is set before us. A lifetime of standing firm in the face of opposition (or rain as, we read above).

Imagine if today we would choose to listen to His voice over all others. Imagine if today we would choose to trust Him. Imagine if today we would choose to build a life upon His principles and promises, and experience His strength in love in our lives.

Be inspired.

‘A dad is someone who wants to keep you from making mistakes but, despite this, lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt. We take a look at where the day on which we celebrate the best men in our lives began and gather some interesting facts around the word ‘Father’!

It may come as a surprise to many to learn that it was actually a girl who came up with the idea of a day to celebrate our fathers. After listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909, Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Washington wanted a special day to honour her father, a widowed Civil War veteran who had been left to raise his six children on a farm and who had done so very well. The first Father’s Day celebration, on June 17, 1910, was proclaimed that month by the mayor of Spokane because it was the month of Smart’s birth.

Later, in 1966, the first presidential proclamation in the USA honouring fathers was issued when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Father’s Day has been celebrated annually since 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed the law that made it permanent and we have been celebrating it ever since.

Big hugs to all the dads out

there. Happy

Father’s Day!

Where it all beganFather’s Day FactsIt is believed that the word ‘Dad’ dates back to as early as the sixteenth century.

The rose is the official flower for Father’s Day. Wearing a red rose signifies a living father, while a white one represents a deceased father.

according to market research, most dads would prefer to spend quality time with their families on Father’s Day than to receive a gift or a card.

Hallmark recognizes Father’s Day as the fourth most popular holiday for sending out cards and 110

million cards are sent for Father’s Day each year. Fifty percent of these cards are given to dads by

sons and daughters, 20 percent are given by wives and 30 percent are given by relatives and friends

to anyone who is a father.

Hallmark produces over 800 card designs for Father’s Day.Father’s Day is celebrated in most places on the third Sunday in June, but not everywhere. In Spain and Portugal, for instance, fathers are honoured on St. Joseph’s Day, on March 19. In Australia, it’s the first Sunday in September. Finnish people celebrate the festival on the second Sunday in November and in Thailand, 5 December is observed as Father’s Day every year.

today some of the most popular internet searches connected to the day include father’s day recipes — it seems that food really is the way to a man’s heart.

Items high on the list for Father’s Day gifts include items that you might find in dad’s toolbox, such as hammers, wrenches and screwdrivers.

Dad storiesA.A. Milne created Winnie the Pooh for his son,

Christopher Robin. Pooh was based on Robin’s teddy

bear, Edward, a gift that Christopher had received for

his first birthday, and a bear at the London Zoo named

Winnie, who was Christopher’s favourite on their father/

son visits to the zoo. Pooh comes from the name of

Christopher’s pet swan.

the only father/daughter collaboration to hit the top spot on the Billboard Pop Music

chart was the 1967 hit single, something stupid, by Frank and Nancy sinatra.

The Stevie Wonder song, ‘Isn’t She Lovely’, is about his new-born daughter, Aisha. If you listen closely, you can hear Aisha crying during the song.

Dick hoyt has pushed and pulled his son, rick, who has cerebral palsy, through hundreds of marathons and triathlons. rick cannot speak, but using

a custom-designed computer, he is able to communicate. they ran their first five-mile race together when rick was in high school. When they were

done, rick sent his father this message: “Dad, when we were running, it felt like i wasn’t disabled anymore!”

Ken Mann, a local professional photographer, started an informal photography club more than 10 years ago, creating a gathering point for people who shared his interest in photography to get together and share their stories and images. After running the club for several years, Ken eventually handed over the reins to Bebhinn Spoors. Bebhinn, who is equally passionate about photography, took on the challenge of running the club and has done so for the past year. We chat to Bebhinn and Tim Driman about where the club is at today and why you should join.

With the help of a new member, Tim Driman, the club has recently managed to secure a venue at the Simbithi Country Club where members can hold their monthly meetings. The club has grown and flourished over the past few months and both amateur and professional photographers have been encouraged to join and showcase their love for photography. Anyone who is interested in photography is welcome and can attend monthly meetings at which they are given the opportunity to have their images critiqued and judged.

Chatting to Bebhinn and Tim, it’s clear that the club has become a vehicle that allows anyone, no matter what their age, who has a device that can take pictures and loves the art of photography, to share what they know. Photography, after all, isn’t about what you are shooting with or whether you have the most expensive camera, or just a smart phone — it’s about the creative and artistic eye of the shooter.

Members are also able to pair up with people with a vast skill-set and so learn what techniques or settings are best for specific types of photography. All in all, for the cost of a nominal subs fee, you could be on the fast track to becoming quite the pro photographer and creating lasting relationships and having fun whilst doing so.

We are truly privileged to live on such a spectacular coastline. The Ballito Photo Club is a place that allows the people of the community to learn more about the art of photography and, best of all, to get out of the house and away from the TV to capture some of this beauty.

So what has changed along with the club’s not-too-shabby new premises at the Simbithi Country Club? Apart from a major increase in numbers, members are now able to come early and have dinner or a few drinks at the Fig Tree Restaurant before attending meetings, which as you

tell us a bit about yourself and your music?I’m an aspiring SA muso and have been playing guitar for close on 12 years. I studied one year of contemporary music at the South African Music Institute and one year of classical at Rhodes University. I honestly couldn’t see myself doing anything else I love more, I truly believe that music is more powerful and infinite than all wisdom and philosophy as it can be heard or interpreted by any culture. Besides music I am no newbie to the kitchen or the ocean and have recently taken up shark wading some may know it as surfing.

For our readers who have never heard your music, explain your sound in 5 words:Ambient, progressive, rhythmic, percussive and unique.

how does a local (kZn) person go about breaking into the music market professionally? Firstly establish your product and which niche market you are going to target (pubs, restaurants, corporate events etc). Spend time to rehearse and develop your technique, style and overall performance. Once you are confident enough grab any opportunity that comes your way. It’s really important that you utilize social media as a tool to market your gigs. Once you have gained momentum you have to roll with the punches and keep persisting. I would also record an Ep and punt it at every gig, its great exposure and a little extra income to invest back into your business. is it harder for a band to breakthrough then being a solo artist?I think it’s harder for a band to make it

in the music industry. A band would have to invest more time to rehearse. A band would also require everyone to be focused and committed to the project as they are interdependent, whereas a solo artist is only dependent on themselves. Financially it would also be harder to profit off the gigs: travel costs and accommodation etc. how do you promote yourself to land big events, what big events have you played at?I promote myself through Facebook, YouTube and I have an advert in “The Woo? Business Directory”. However, I think the most effective way to promote yourself is by approaching venues and landing as many gigs as you can. I performed at Splashy Fen in 2012, which was probably my biggest gig to this date. I organised that by sending in a submission form along with a biography,

Ballito

photos and an Ep to C weed productions. So yeah just put yourself out there with an edge of professionalism and don’t undersell yourself and you should see the results and land a big gig or two. What is the vision for your music career ie: are you ambitious to become the next big S.a artist? My vision is to break into a ‘niche’ market and gain popularity that way. If I manage to become SA’s next big artist, that would be a bonus. I’m content with making a living through my passion and sharing it with people. are any of your songs on radio? if so how does that process happen? My song “Shadows” has been play listed on Zone Radio which is an online radio station based in cape town. “The Hunt” was used as a track on Journey to the roof: a Motorsport documentary, which was on Super-Sport. Both tracks are available on my Ep “The beginning” which is available for purchase at my shows. When exactly do you know in this industry that you’ve made it?I am a full time musician so in some respects I have made it. Do I feel like I have made it...No, I plan to continue improving my craft until I’m old. I hope to leave a legacy behind. Do you write your own songs, what is your inspiration when writing?I do write my own songs. In some songs I draw inspiration from my life experiences and try and convey a certain revelation or emotion through the music. In other songs I just link ‘riffs’ or ideas together and form a song. I also improvise songs at my live performances. Biggest influence to your musical career so far?My biggest influence has been Andy Mckee. He is a master of the guitar and has a very unconventional way of playing. His song “Drifting” revolutionized my style of playing as it introduced me to open tuning and slap harmonics. What do you think about when you’re performing? It sounds strange, but I don’t think about much when I’m performing. If my mind is

clear I have a better performance. I think once a song is ingrained into your long term memory it’s sequenced and coordinated by muscle memory – similar to when you are driving a car or walking, it just becomes second nature.

I learnt “drifting” by Andy doing it and that inspired me to start writing my own original slap harmonic songs. The style is similar to that of John Gomm, Michael Hedges and John Butler. By using open tunings you can do an individual bass line with your left hand and a melody with your right. I also embellish percussive beats into the song by slapping the body of the guitar.

Who locally has promoted you the most? There are so many people to thank for me being where I am today. Firstly, I would like to thank Donovan Crewe from The Studio for recording and designing the artwork of my Ep ‘The beginning”. Secondly, I would like to thank Ard Matthews for inviting me to open for him at Cool Running’s, my performance was streamed live online. Thirdly, I would like to thank Pedro from C Weed productions for allowing me to perform at Splashy Fen. Lastly, a big thank you to all my family, friends and fans that have been at all my shows!

Best advice you’ve ever been given?“Make mistakes with confidence and no one will notice”. Five years from now, you will be….In five years from now I hope to be more acclaimed and popular in the music industry, up until that point: I’m going to continue working hard, writing new material, gigging and enjoying life. Where can budding fans hear your music, pubs, clubs, Youtube etc?I have a YouTube channel which you can subscribe to (search Philthyism). I also have a Sound-cloud account with some tracks uploaded (search Philmof). Check out my Facebook page to keep up to date with all my gigs...just search Phil Moffett. I Also have a side project with Neil Claydon we perform as a duo. I’m on guitar and backing vocals and Neil is on lead vocals and percussion. We are called “Rebel Hill” you can have a listen to our tracks on Sound-cloud and you can check us out on our Facebook page.

the sun was steady in the sky and there wasn’t a breath of wind — it was an understatement to say that it was a perfect day. I looked

up at the sky and then down at the grassy earth beneath my feet and thought, ‘Why on earth would I ever want to leave the comfort of terra firma — am I mad!’ It was then that I remembered part of a quote by Rene Daumal that I had read just a few days before — ‘When one no longer sees, one can at least still know’.

So, with these wise words in mind, I sucked up the courage and climbed into the weird flying contraption that they call a microlight and readied myself to see the place that I call home from a perspective that only a few have been able to delight in... The propeller rotated, the microlight moved forward and, in the space of a short breath, we were airborne and watching the cars on the N2 become like toys in a child’s game.

But that’s for later… To do this story justice, I first have to talk about the man behind it, a man with an infinite infatuation with adrenaline-filled airborne activities. David Daniel is the owner of Come Fly, a Civil Aviation Authority-approved microlight training school, where you can participate in flights as potential students, with, of course, an instructor as your pilot in accordance with the strict laws governing microlighting. He found his love for the wonders of the sky at the tender age of five. His dream of running his own flight park finally became a reality when Gateway was built on what at that time was the only local mircolight field. ‘All good stories begin with a dream and, as I stood in waist-high grass, facing south, I “saw” where the hangars would be built, “saw” the kitchen and dining areas, the cottages where we would live, the runway and aircraft taking off and landing... the idea for La Mercy Flight Park was born,’ says David.

Unfortunately, when the promulgation of the controlled airspace boundaries was established, he had to close the book on La Mercy, but not on his dreams. Soon after, he found another place for free-flyers outside of controlled airspace and Comefly Microlights, the new home for free-flying on the North Coast, was established. ‘I give glory to God for all the abundant love that splashes — no, pours — into my life. Nothing, absolutely nothing, stands in my way. I have achieved everything that I have dreamt of achieving,’ he says. Passion aside, David’s immense knowledge and years of experience have given him a no-accident track-record (this was a relief of immense proportions for me, as you can imagine) and one of the best microlight schools in KZN.

As David says, a microlight flight has gotta be one of the most incredible experiences that you can have without risking life and

limb. During our ascent over the sugar cane fields, climbing to over 500 feet, my first thoughts were, ‘Oh S#*t my life and limb’ and, with both hands clamped onto Ron’s (David’s right-hand man) shoulders, I decided that it would be a pretty good idea to start praying! Then, like a happy ending from Sleepless in Seattle, we headed south, leaving the contours of the sugar cane fields, till that breath-taking moment when the Indian Ocean appears in all its vastness. If your heart doesn’t skip a beat when you are faced with that beauty, you have no heart! We travelled along the coastline from Tinley Manor up to Thompson’s Bay, taking in every single moment of the three-dimensional experience of airspace. In the time that you are up there, you truly come to appreciate the natural beauty that we are fortunate enough to live in. The vision of the pristine beaches, being able to watch Fish Eagles in their natural habitat, and then sweeping over the backline waves

searching for dolphins, turtles, sting-rays and any other sea life that might be lurking below the water – this is something that you cannot put a price on. We are so often consumed by the tomorrows and yesterdays that being in the now for once was something that I relished.

I relaxed and unclasped my nails from Ron’s shoulders and began to feel as free as I imagine only a bird could feel! After a flawless decent and landing back at the airfield, I felt sad that it was all over and when I glanced at the sky again, I looked at it with different eyes — open eyes with the remembrance of what I had just been privileged enough to witness!

Whether this experience sees the start of a new hobby or remains a once-in-a-lifetime experience, you will be left on Cloud Nine. I can’t recommend this excursion highly enough!

Ballito

Yes, It is that time of the year again to head back to the shores of Ballito and immerse yourself in the culture of this down-to earth fine wining

and dining experience. Last year saw the launch of Ballito’s first-ever Coastal Living Bru Food and Wine Show, which proved so popular that it has already become a must-attend event on the June/July calendar. Born out of the Mr Price Pro Ballito International Surf and Lifestyle Festival, the event was a huge success which provided Pro-goers with great entertainment throughout the day and night.

The go-to place for the best of coastal living will once again be at the La Montagne Resort right on the beach, where Coastal Living Bru is set to once again captivate the senses of foodies from all walks of life. This year it is all about testing and celebrating the elements, bringing the elements together in an explosion of culinary delights

and showing off the very best of good, home-grown authentic food and wine.

In the SMEG kitchens, the Fleur Du Cap So You Think You Can Cook Ballito-Style competition will be testing the culinary skills of eight teams in each of which one professional chef is paired with one amateur chef. The teams will cook against the clock in a Mystery Box competition where the box will contain one of the five elements — think Fire, Water, Wood, Metal, Earth — plus food from the Lifestyle Spar Pantry, in a bid to win the favour of the celebrity judges for the title of Mr Price Pro Ballito Chef, as well as the grand prize. The first and second nights of the competition will be elimination rounds leading up to the final on the third night.

Budding young chefs have not been forgotten and they will come together to compete for the Fine Young Cooks award.

All the aspiring young chefs will compete in an elimination round on 21 June, with the top 12 then pairing up with students from the International Hotel School to compete in the main competition at the Coastal Living Bru Event, where there will be lots of exciting prizes up for grabs.

Every home has a cake boss and they will have an opportunity to don an apron and bake up a storm to produce a creation to impress the judges and win a spot in the Ballito Cake Boss competition. Three finalists will then have to create and decorate a cake depicting at least one of the elements of the earth — get ready to be WOWED!

Another highlight of Coastal Living Bru will be a three-day fashion extravaganza which will kick off on day one with a fun fashion show featuring models of all ages brought to you by the Simply Younique Modelling and

Finishing School for Boys and Girls, which is owned by Karen Landman, Mrs Durban 2013. Models will be showcasing garments from various clothing outlets, like Kalliko, Samsama and Vanilla Lula, to name but a few.

The Miss Ballito 2014 competition is a pageant with a difference, supporting, as it does, numerous charities, with the belief that ‘beauty within, gives to those without’. A showcase by the Miss Ballito 2014 entrants will take place on day two and will culminate in the announcement of the 2014 finalists, who will go through to the finals to be held on 17 October 2014.

The best-of-the-best will appear on the ramp on the final night, with some interesting and innovative designs from young designers. A young designer competition will be hosted, with amazing prizes to be won.

All three nights of the fashion shows will be choreographed by Kevin Ellis, the award-winning designer, choreographer, stylist, model scout, winner of Durban July Gold Cup, Golden Horse Casino, and the 2014 J and B Met — he’s the man who scouted out the world-famous Victoria’s Secret model, Candice Swanepoel. Kevin’s designs are a mixture of over-the-top, avant garde and flirtatious fashion reminiscent of a bygone era.

Guests at the show will be able to wander amongst bustling stalls and exhibits celebrating artisan food and brews, showcasing the unique organic home-grown offerings of the North Coast. Local restaurants will entice food-lovers with taster menus showcasing their culinary delights. You should also remember to take some time out to enjoy a wine tasting from a variety of Cape Legends wine estates.

A wine auction will be held on Wednesday, 2 July where wine connoisseurs can bid for premium bottles and vintages. Proceeds of the wine auction will be donated to the Red Cap Foundation, the charity selected to be supported by the festival this year.

This donation will help subsidise the invaluable work being done amongst young people in South Africa by the Red Cap Foundation. The foundation’s aim is to engage, enable and inspire children of all ages by contributing to social change and an opportunity for a positive future for all in South Africa through social development, education and skills development.

The perfect place to be this winter is at the Coastal Living Bru Food and Wine Show if you want some good, old-fashioned fun and entertainment and the chance to tuck into a tasty bite and sip on a brew.

Beira AltaLocated in the Boulevard Centre in lower Ballito, Mozambik is a very popular restaurant that is best-known for its amazing Portuguese-style seafood. Voted into the number one spot by you, we set off to try Mozambik’s seafood for ourselves and were not disappointed. What awaited us on our arrival was a feast worthy of King Triton himself! We gorged ourselves on Crab Curry (bibs and all), with our waitering staff showing us how best to eat the crab. The next dish that we tried was a local favourite, Grilled Calamari and Prawns in a Mild Peri-peri Sauce, and we soon saw — and tasted — why it’s such a favourite! To top it all off came our personal favourite, the Crayfish Thermidor. This was a beautifully-cooked crayfish served with creamy mash, cheese and mushrooms and stuffed with prawns. Simply to die for! We will definitely be back for round two once we’ve recovered from round one!

This restaurant is a firm favourite in Ballito amongst those wanting authentic Portuguese seafood served in a classy, yet relaxed atmosphere. Beira Alta is located in the Lifestyle Centre and you can sense the underlying passion in the food that you eat, the outstanding service that you receive and the innovative menu at this family-run business. A must-try when you have a serious seafood craving to satisfy is the Seafood Platter, which serves two very comfortably. This dish has just about everything that you could possibly wish for, including lobster, calamari, line fish, three different types of prawns and mussels, all grilled to perfection and served with Beira’s Alta’s famous in-house chips. My favourite is definitely the Lemon, Garlic and Mild Peri-peri Grilled Prawns — always outstanding. As a side-note, they have hands down the best Strawberry Daiquiris in Ballito!

tel 032 946 2388

Situated right on the beach in front of Clarke’s Bay, Al Pescatore offers spectacular views of the ocean, as well as a relaxed yet lively atmosphere. With a diehard loyal customer base, this restaurant is at the top of many locals’ list when it comes to outstanding and innovative seafood dishes. Trevor (the owner) is always on the look-out for interesting new ideas and combinations. A must-try is their Paella. Originally a peasant dish from Spain, the Al Pescatore version consists of a combination of seafood, chorizo sausages and chicken with rice, olives and peppers... The view is aways a contributing factor to a great experience. The food and especially our first Seafood Paella, was a real taste treat and was the perfect size for 2 to share. The seafood was cooked to perfection, with a great glass of wine, good company and Trevor’s attentiveness, the meal tasted even better. Understandably voted top four Seafood restaurant by the locals.

Crawdaddy’s, located at 16 Compensation Beach Road, offers the perfect dining experience for anyone looking for a casual night out. It has a great feel-good vibe and screams, ‘Eat the seafood — it’s better than good!’ A definite must for a party of six is the Corra’s Grande Platter, a platter heaped high with grilled seafood and rice. You can look forward to four crayfish, eight king prawns, 24 queen prawns, Dorado, calamari, squid heads and a creamy mussel pot, as well as a plate each of rice and creamed spinach, plus a plethora of different of sauces. This is definitely not a meal for the faint-hearted — it takes serious food dedication to tackle this one. With top-quality seafood and fresh ingredients, it’s no wonder that Crawdaddys’s was voted into the top four! It’s a must-try for anyone looking for a great, chilled, pub-like vibe and moreish seafood eaten right by the ocean.

For the love of the rideOne of the most liberating sports currently sweeping the world at a quite astounding pace is mountain biking. In a society where we are pressured by so many factors — work, bills and life in general — freedom is hard to come by and it is this freedom that attracts people of all ages and stages of life to this thrilling sport. It doesn’t matter where you come from, how you dress, how much money you have, how old you are or where you are in the world because mountain biking offers ‘neutral ground’ for people to gather, tell stories, chill out or simply just enjoy the ride.W

Local farmer and businessman, Nic Jordan, was quick to recognise this growing trend when he started riding himself some years ago. ‘I realised that the farm that I had grown up on had amazing views and terrain that was a mountain biker’s paradise,’ he says. Soon, what had started as a fun activity for him became an exciting group activity and, as the numbers of riders grew, so did the need for the ‘go-ahead’ to ride on surrounding farms. This led Nic to establish Holla Trails and provide a legal place for people in the area to escape to and experience the thrill of a mountain bike ride. Now, with over 300 kilometres of trails to ride through, his business has grown exponentially to become possibly the biggest demarcated trail centre in the country.

It offers immaculate and well-set out bike trails for everyone from beginners to expert riders (bikes may be hired), as well as running trails and a rather cosy coffee shop that also stocks some pretty refreshing craft beers — apparently there is nothing quite like an honest beer after a long ride. Chatting to Nic, it’s easy to see that for him the creation of Holla Trails isn’t seen as a ticket to a yacht in Durban Harbour, but rather as a way to open up our beautiful countryside and provide a space that gets the community and families together in the outdoors, doing something that involves a bit of healthy exercise — something that is sorely lacking in our society. ‘It’s really all about spreading it around where needed, whilst still sustaining the business so that

people will always be able to ride freely in well-maintained routed areas,’ says Nic.

Through the years, Holla Trails has made it its mission to give back to the community and, apart from the ongoing maintenance of the farm routes, they have adopted a local primary school, which has undergone numerous renovations, as a way of lending a helping hand to the community that surrounds their trails. Last year they also raised R7000 for Umhlali Primary School and this year they hosted the popular Gears for Ears mountain bike race, helping to raise R25 000 for cochlear implants

Trails and puts a great deal of his time and experience in the mountain biking world to work in the business. He has been riding for going on 14 years and is a former competitive mountain biker, so his expertise and experience are invaluable when it comes to locating and laying out trails which, as Nic says, is not simply a matter of cutting into the bush. ‘There is an art and science to it that can make for a really pleasurable and exciting ride and, at the end of the day, when bikers have had an enjoyable but challenging ride, they are guaranteed to come back for more,’ says Nic.

Mountain biking is a really great hobby and, if you aren’t doing it competitively, it really

doesn’t have to be all that expensive. It doesn’t take up as much of the day as golf, the logistics are easier than with paddling, it’s a lot easier on the body and joints than running and you can do it well into your 70s. It’s also a very social sport and offers a way to have fun with your kids as a family in a different way and, of course, best of all, you are exercising pretty much your whole body and having a ball while doing so!

‘Riding and exercise give you the same feel-good chemicals and endorphins as an anti-depressant — I would love to see how much happiness our trails create over a weekend,’ says Nic. So why not give Holla Trails a try and see how much you create!

our visit to Gianni's Ristorante in Ballito — which has the most amazing beach and sea views and on a clear day views all the

way to Durban and the harbour entrance — was a truly excellent experience. We got the chance to chat to the owner, John Coburn, who is totally passionate about his restaurant. He knows the menu like the back of his hand and gets excited about the long list of must-try's. I was also very impressed with how fresh everything was — only the best of the best!

For starters we had the Cozze Pot (mussels served with a white wine, olive oil, parsely and garlic sauce), which was prepared to perfection, and a decent portion size, and then we also had the best oysters that I have ever tasted, they were fresh, huge! For mains John insisted that we try the Seafood Platter and the Oven-baked Chicken and I am very glad that he did, as we were extremely impressed with both dishes. My platter was generous (a take-away was required). The crayfish was the perfect size for

saying, ‘Yes! I have found the perfect spot for the best crayfish on the North Coast, plus the most amazing view!’ The entire platter was grilled to perfection and the prawns, fish and calamari were all very tasty —with 3 tasting sauces that just finished the platter perfectly, a definite must-do-again. Justin had the Half-Chicken Peri-Peri, perfectly basted and it was baked in the pizza oven and served with baked potato and vegetables. The 45-minutewait was well worth it, allowing us a leisurely chat as we watched the waves and reminisced about the perfect place we live in — Ballito, of course — before the perfectly-cooked chicken arrived. Justin was enormously impressed — it was tasty and moist, with a fabulous flavour with just the right kick (but not so hot that you couldn’t enjoy it to the last bite). At the end of our meal, I tried the Mousse Al Cioccolata (chocolate mousse) with a very good cappuccino — the perfect way to end a fabulous meal.

We also love the fact that John is actively pursuing the breakfast market. The one thing that we have always done wherever

TT we go, is to breakfast on the beach and Ballito has been hugely lacking in that area — but not any longer! The breakfast options are small enough not be confusing, but varied enough to have options. The French toast served with bacon and banana, topped with rocket and golden syrup, is a must-try, as is the Mama’s Breakfast (R25). The restaurant offers breakfast from 7.30a.m, a nice variety of lunch specials, pizza and a kids’ menu, plus an à la carte dinner menu. Families are most welcome, but there is no special kids’ area.

It was interesting to note that nothing here is made in the same way as everywhere else. John has added his personal touch to everything and his vast travel and eating experience has been carried into his menu — and it shows. We had a superb experience at Gianni’s, where the food was great and the view even better. At weekends you need to book or you won’t get a seat (especially not one with a view)!

I recently had the opportunity of spending an afternoon with the two co-owners of the hairmarx hair Salon and their team. Hairmarx, which will be celebrating its fifth anniversary in June, is one of the ‘oldest’ residents at The Quarters and the salon has gone from strength to strength, continuing to flourish in this shopping centre. Monique and Adele, the owners, have come a long way since they worked together for a boss to co-owning this salon. Hairmarx is the brain-child of Adele and she was joined three years down the line by Monique as a partner

Hairmarx is a vibrant salon that is very warm and inviting. When I walked in,I felt really comfortable and so at ease that I kicked off my shoes and settled in for a much-needed pamper. Visiting a hair salon is always a huge treat for me, as that’s when I can really relax. For some people, it’s a day at a spa, but for me it’s a hair salon. The ladies are very welcoming and, for them, the most important thing is the health of your hair. They would rather take a longer route to get to the end result so as to be sure that you get the look that you are after and that your hair is healthy.

Healthy, Happy Hair

I was introduced to the amazing Joico 4-step salon-exclusive treatment. As winter is setting in and skin and hair get so very dry in winter, this is excellent as a pre-winter treatment that repairs all types of hair in the most optimal way, making it more receptive to styling and chemical treatments. The result was the healthiest and most beautiful hair that you can imagine! They also applied a ‘glaze’ to my hair to make it even shinier. Joico has just introduced a remarkable new product, Cliniscalp, an advanced botanical solution for thinning hair that has been clinically proven to leave hair fuller, healthier and thicker-looking.

As my visit drew to an end, my new look was revealed... beautiful blonde highlights with light brown streaks and striking darker streaks below. I was so happy with my shiny, healthy hair and much-needed haircut.

If you are looking for a hair salon where you can feel at home and enjoy great service, pay a visit to Hairmarx Hair Salon.

Sitting at Fego Cafe in Tiffany’s Mall for our restaurant review, I was surprised to see just how many people conduct meetings, catch up on work and just generally meet with friends for a quick catch-up there. Even though on that day the power was flaky, the restaurant was brim-full of businessmen having informal business meetings over lunch, ladies having coffee and cake with their girlfriends and people popping in for a quick sit-down or take-away before heading back to work.

After eating there, though, it’s easy to understand why it’s so popular. Unlike most franchises, Fego uses fresh, quality ingredients cooked with expertise and a bit more finesse than many franchised cafes. The menu is broad and the dishes well thought-out so as to offer simple gourmet meals. Service is good and the waitrons really know their menu and go above and beyond to help make your experience a positive one. They also keep on top of simple things, like clearing plates as they are moved to the side or wiping where ice has

Easy food that tastes greatmelted. The manageress is a very cheerful woman who makes it her mission to make sure that you are happy and satisfied and it was great to see how many diners walking in are greeted by name. Little things like these can turn a good experience into a great one and create regular customers.

Food-wise, we thought we’d opt for what the house said was a must-try. I had the Spicy Chicken Rosti, served with rocket and a balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing and cherry tomatoes. At R39, it’s a really reasonably-priced meal for its size, with two crispy rostis (flat cakes of grated potatoes) underneath a fair-sized portion of delicious, mildly-spiced chicken cooked just right, with the pairing of balsamic vinegar and rocket making this meal a great choice for a late breakfast — so simple, but so effective!

New to the menu is the Flat Iron Steak Baguette — a straightforward steak salad sandwich filled with rump strips, done to your liking, on a bed of lettuce and tomatoes, topped with grilled red peppers,

red onions, rocket and dill pickle butter. As it’s not drenched in sauce, it is on the healthy side and makes for a nice, easy meal to grab for a quick lunch that’s sure to fill you up.

Before we left, the team bent our arms urging us to try Fego’s famous Bar One Cake. Please don’t think that you’ll be getting a small piece of chocolate cake with some melted Bar One chocolate squeezed on top of it! This is the real McCoy — the big daddy of all Bar One cakes. The cake has a soft and fluffy consistency with a chocolate icing middle and is topped with caramel and chocolate shavings, with a thick caramel layer around the circumference, served with a dollop of cream. It is a hefty-sized portion, so I’d definitely share it with a friend, or even two, but if you feel like death by chocolate, this may be a walk in the park for you.

Next time you’re thinking about lunch or a great place to have a meeting, think Fego’s.

Easy food that tastes greatA few weeks ago, I tried out the perfect 10 nail and body studio owned by the very enthusiastic Kalai Moodley. I decided on a Nimue facial treatment because I have heard only great things about it and also because unique to the Ballito market and it is one of the few DERMOCOSMOCEUTICAL ranges that skincare centers are allowed to keep. Let me say that I am EXTREMELY IMPRESSED — I have had a good number of facials in my time, but I haven’t always ended up with results like those from Perfect 10. Within 24 hours I could see that my skin had been exceptionally cleansed and was looking really bright and today my skin feels baby-soft. And, because my skin looks so great and radiant, I don’t even feel the need to cover up with foundation!

During the appointment, Semai, my therapist, proved to be very knowledgeable and asked me about my skincare routine and concerns. It turns out that, although I’ve got a young, good-looking skin, it is rather dry so, after a consultation and analysis, a Super Hydrating facial was decided on.

The salon is in a rather small, plain little space, but don’t let that fool you — the staff’s knowledge and workmanship is top-notch, so much so that they have

Putting the ‘p’ won “SALON OF THE YEAR” in 2013 out of all the Perfect 10 studio’s in SA, as well as “FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR” in 2014, which includes all franchised businesses and finally 3 of their nail technicians have been short listed in the “TOP 5 NAIL TECH” category in SA.

Samui did a great job of explaining everything as she was doing it and also gave me a ton of great skin-care advice. She started off with a double-cleanse and steam to really open my pores so that the products could penetrate to hydrate deep within the skin. This was followed by a conditioner (toner) and enzyme exfoliation, which is a natural, less harsh alternative to chemical peels and gently exfoliates the skin whilst supporting the natural process of cell renewal for a refreshed, clear, glowing effect. It is great and exfoliates without irritating your skin and also invigorates dull complexions. Whilst the exfoliant was on, Samui used a BT (Bio Therapeutic) Micro machine on my face which, if you’ve never had it, is an ultrasonic exfoliation that works by creating high-speed oscillations, leaving skin smooth, fresh, and perfectly prepared for product application to penetrate deep into the skin.

As you can imagine, at this point, I was in seventh heaven and I thought that it couldn’t possibly get any better, but it did! After my exfoliation, she gave me a face and neck massage, using techniques to help relieve any sinus issues that might have been building up — the knots in my shoulders didn’t mind either! Then it got even better when I received a head massage while my mask was left to set. I loved the smell of all of the products — very fresh and luxurious!

Apart from their great Nimue facials, the salon also does Dermalogica facials and offers various other treatment options as well. Perfect 10 is, of course, also very well known for their nail treatments.

I was so relaxed during my time there that I almost dozed off! Overall, I would really recommend Perfect 10 for anybody who wants a top-quality facial and/or has problem skin issues that they would like to address — my skin has never felt or looked better.

But don’t take my word for it. Book an appointment and experience all that Perfect 10 has to offer for yourself!

in a perfect pamper day

Owners Sherna Gomes & Riette ColmanPlastics and More

Seeds

When did you start? At the beginning of August 2013. What do you do? We have a retail shop that stocks a huge range of plastic and homeware products, making us your ideal home destination store.

Why did you start this business? We had been coming to Ballito on holiday for a number of years and every time that we needed plastic products or containers we had to drive some distance to purchase these items, so we decided that it’d be a good idea to open Plastics and More.

What do you think your customers want? Product variety and a fair price for quality products.

Biggest lesson learnt? If you really set your mind to something, you can do it, but a LOT of hard work is necessary (sometimes more than expected).

What do you deem to be success? For the business to pay its own way and for us to get a return on the investment.

What do you think the cornerstone of your business is going to be? Being flexible and constantly changing / increasing the stock-holding as per the customers’ requirements. There are literally thousands of plastic products available and

we are obviously not able to stock every one of them, but we do source new products if there is a demand for them.

What is your number one rule in business? Honesty and to resolve customer queries (whatever they may be) to the best of our ability, as well as to treat customers as we would like to be treated in a retail store. We clearly are not able to please everyone, but we will certainly try and accommodate them.

What are your views on integrity in business? It is of the utmost importance. You can’t run

a business without it, especially in a small town.

What words comes to mind when you hear the word ‘Ballito’? This is different for different people and to us it was growth, quality of life and holiday.

What does the future hold for you and your business? We hope to become a household name for our type of products in the local community. We are committed to continuing to support local suppliers in our quest for new and innovative products that are not readily available.

When did you start? In 2003.

What do you do? We are an online wall art printing and sales company. We take your favourite images and turn them into works of art on canvasses, acrylic glass, in frames and other mediums. We have a retail store in Ballito, but have a national footprint through our web store. Order online, upload your pictures and we’ll ship your work of art to your door ready to hang in seven to nine days.

Why did you start this business? Paul senior has been a professional photographer his whole life, travelling throughout Southern Africa. Paul senior and Paul junior started the business as a way for Paul senior to remain involved in photography but without the need for so much travel. What do you know your customers want? They want quality, reliability and consistency in their image re-production.

Biggest lesson learnt? Focus on quality and not just on giving the best price. In the online environment, people place a lot of trust in the transaction and hence you have to try and over-deliver so that the customer-experience exceeds expectation.

When did you know that you were successful? We believe that we have become a leader in

the South African market and that we are well-known, especially to the photographic community, for our product range and quality. An Internet-based business is constantly evolving and other printing businesses are following us, which is a good sign.

What is the cornerstone of your business? A blend of Internet business know-how and decades of experience in professional photography.

What’s your number one rule in business? Don’t let the client down.

What are your views on integrity in business? All of our stakeholders and staff work very hard at constantly improving our product offering, user experience and service. This collective effort shows traditional integrity in the new digital landscape.

What words comes to mind when you hear the word ‘Ballito’? Quality of life first...

What does the future hold? Lots of fun and hard work, happy staff and families and accurate business decisions.

DREAM BUSINESS TEAM

to understand the meaning and importance of a dream team, use this handy acronym: T E A M – Together Everyone Achieves More.

As every successful entrepreneur knows human capital is the greatest asset of any business. A dream team makes it possible to accomplish the business’s overall objectives, be more productive and ultimately more profitable. But more importantly a great team in place frees the business owner up to concentrate on further growth.

One of the biggest complaints of business owners is that they cannot find qualified, competent help. Entrepreneurs asked to critique their own businesses point out how much more they could do if only they had more capable and enthusiastic employees who were also invested in the growth of the business.

The first step in finding your dream team is to realise that the staff you get are the staff you deserve. This means

that the staff you employ is a reflection of either your ability or your inability. The people you attract into your life are a mirror of where you are in your own life. If you are a skilled business owner and a great leader you will attract great people to work for you. Then when you get to this level, it’s rarely necessary to look for people: they usually look for you. All too often it’s the business owner who is the weakest link in the chain of command.

Here are four factors that contribute to the success and synergy of a well-rounded team:

1. unleashing the power of Vision Before you place a recruitment advert, clearly define a vision statement for your business so your team can all play by the same rules. Without one, a business is like a society with no culture.

2. Smart Goals Achievement depends on the underlying infrastructure of clearly defined and realistic goals. Goals offer direction to keep the team focused on

the mission and vision of the business. Goals should adhere to the acronym for S M A R T: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-oriented and set within a reasonable Time frame.

3. rules of the Game and action plans Define boundaries and areas of quantifiable responsibility so that your team know their unique and specialised roles to prevent unnecessary overlap. Provide an action plan. Give each new employee an appropriate title, a written contract, a detailed job description and line of reporting.

4. risk takingBusiness teams are like trees – they are either growing or dying. Without being open to some degree of healthy risk, it’s impossible for a team to flourish and push the limits of creativity and performance.

Putting all this altogether plus supporting your team with tools, training, technology and systems will free you up to operate your business from a distance and concentrate on your next profitable venture.

Sun, beautiful roads and a straight six burble. Kari Evans-Webb goes all Hollywood with the new BMW 435i Convertible

In our own re-make of the 1991 film Thelma & Louise, fellow journalist Aurelia Mbokazi (Louise), and I (Thelma) both independent and headstrong woman, set about on a road trip around the Ballito area. However, this time, there’s no handgun, no high-speed chase (well, there was a bit at the end) and thankfully no drama. Oh, and there was also no run-down motel room.

This particular road trip was all about discovering the BMW 4-Series Convertible. With a folding hardtop that features design improvements to reduce noise levels to create an amazingly hushed interior, that can still be raised or lowered in 20 seconds at up to 13km/h.

At the South African market launch the 4-Series Convertible range will consist of two petrol engines across five trim levels: SE, Sport, Luxury, Modern and M Sport. The car is very well equipped even when standard, despite the minimal increase in price over its 3-Series predecessor. Price

starts at R656 500 for the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged 428i, which sprints to 100km in just 6.4 seconds. The range-topping 435i starts at R809 000 and blasts from 0-100 in just 5.5 seconds.

The optional eight-speed automatic was, as ever, fabulous! It adjusts easily to a wide range of driving styles and conditions, which really helps to make it perfect for any driver. Inside, it’s all pretty much the same as the 4-Series Coupé, just as it is under the skin. To my feminine tastes, this is clearly the most elegant beast in the range, with that broad, slightly snarling snout and stretched taillights mimicking its 6-Series big brother.

What’s it like to drive? Convertibles tend to err towards a pampered, comfy, driving experience. The low and cosseting seating position is snug and yet offers excellent vision out of the car, everything also falls easily to hand. Criss-crossing the Midlands during an autumnal day was made even easier thanks to the (optional) head-up display. KZN’s long sweeping corners are perfect for condensing the four-hour return trip to King Shaka into just two hours to narrowly catch my plane back to Cape Town.

The extra weight of the Convertible does have an effect on the handling, but it’s still very well balanced and agile – and absolutely perfect for cruising. As the credits start to roll on my own ‘Thelma and Louise’, it becomes clear to me that Susan Sarandon might have had a little less drama in her life if she had had the 4-Series as her steed. BMW deserves a real thumbs-up for a cracking convertible

Since seedy motels would certainly not cut it for me in the elevated status afforded to us by the 435i Convertible, we checked into uMhlanga Rocks Beverly Hills Hotel overnight.

It’s been 50 years since the hotel opened for business, and it’s become a landmark destination for discerning travelers. It’s been no stranger to royalty, celebrities and captains of industry. With uninterrupted views of the ocean, the hotel is perfect for romantic escapes or business travel and offers an idyllic place for guests to unwind. I enjoyed some really gracious service and fantastic rest.

To Ceagan, Roxy and Datin,

The story of each of your births is something that mom and I have shared

with all of you many times. You guys know that telling stories and

remembering great moments in our family’s timeline — special moments

— are what we do and who we are as a clan. Each time that we share the

very unique and very special moments of when each of you were born, it

helps to deepen the memories for mom and me — memories that we hope

that we will never lose. More importantly, it also allows each of you to

hear how things unfolded when each of your siblings were born. Every

story is special and every story is to be cherished. In all the telling of the stories,

though, I don’t think that I’ve ever shared with you how I felt when each of you were born, so this letter is

dedicated to all of you so that you may know more than just the story — you may know a little of my heart.

Not having had a real dad growing up left me a little flustered when I thought of starting and growing our family. Starting a family

was everything to me, but I didn’t have a clue of how to be a dad, let alone a good one. I prayed that God would help give each of you

only the best of me and my traits and reject the worst. I think that you’ve realized that was a noble idea, but that it didn’t happen

exactly as I had planned. I think that God had decided to teach me a little more about myself by giving each of you an interesting mix

of all my traits and behaviours. I love each of them, even the bad ones.

I worried about how, as a young man myself, I would step up and be the father that I had never had, and be good at it. I had no

blueprint. I had only bad examples and I worried that I wouldn’t be able to be better than the examples that I had, but mom helped.

She had amazing faith in me and she encouraged me when each of you arrived. It got easier as the family grew — Ceagan ‘broke me

in’ for Roxann and then the two of you got me ready for Datin. My thoughts were consumed with wondering how I could love you all

unconditionally but yet be responsible for you and how I could encourage you and fill each of you with belief and self-worth in a way

that wasn’t condescending, in a way that you would feel was unique, genuine, sincere and truly loving.

I thought too much — that’s for sure!

It’s been 16 years since I became a dad for the first time and, when I look at each of you, I know that every one of my prayers has

been answered. So, what does a dad say to the children that he adores? What gem of advice do I share that is profound or life-

changing when all of you have so drastically changed my life? I’m not sure that there is any one nugget of advice, plus I hope that I’ll

get to spend many more years sharing wisdom with you, so I won’t try get it right in this letter, but I can tell you that if you only

love your children the way that I love you, I know that they will be fine, that they will be deeply loved and that you will never have to

wonder as much as I did about how good you’ll be as a parent. Great kids make great parents. It’s called generational theory, but you

already knew that!

All my love, Dad

Dear Chaye

It was a Friday afternoon and your mom and I were

super-excited because we were going to see one of the

last scans of you in the womb… your birth was

only about five to six weeks away and we were very

elated. But, unbeknown to us, mom was losing

all her amniotic fluid and we were told at the

scan that you would be arriving a lot sooner than

expected. I was very scared and I wasn’t sure

what to expect

On the morning of your birth I was so nervous that I completely forgot to bring a

battery for the camera. I had the massive DSLR camera around my neck — without a battery —

and we ended up going through the entire surgery with an unusable camera while the nurses and

doctors took photos with their cell phones! Your mom lay there looking at me anxiously and very

frightened. The doctor encouraged me to watch the C-section, but it was really hard watching your

mother being manhandled that way and I nearly passed out. But all this was swept aside the

moment that I saw you.

You had the most amazingly beautiful dark-blue eyes, blinking rapidly while the doctor tried to

remove you from mom. Everyone says that there was no way that you could have seen me, but I still

firmly believe that I saw you and you saw me. We had our first moment and it is one that I will

never forget — it was such a precious moment.

I remember people, including your mother, asking me what I thought, but I was speechless. All that

I could mutter was, ‘She is perfect!’ This also proved to be a terrible turning-point for me. I had to

make a choice — to leave my incapacitated wife too so that I could go and look after my daughter,

or neglect my daughter to stay with my wife — and it was one of the hardest decisions that I

had ever had to make. But Mom made it easier when she told me to go and be with our little girl. I

ran. I left and I spent every moment next to you while they carted your tiny body to the NICU and

the hardest part about it all was knowing that you were just too small and premature to be held,

cuddled and nurtured the way that we longed to do. I tried to make sure that I was as close to

you as I could be, touching you or holding a finger, and making sure that you could hear my voice. I

wanted you to know how much you were already loved.

We learnt very quickly just how tough you are — in five short days (which seemed like an eternity

at the time) you were ready to come home. You were smaller than any baby that I had ever seen or

held — so small that we couldn’t even burp you in the normal way. But we had to take you home

and we had to keep you safe from the outside world. I acted like a protective Jack Russell, keeping

everyone at bay, just snatching their gifts of food and then chasing them away to give you and

Mom space to grow and be strong.

Before we knew it, you had grown up into an amazing, bubbly little being, with so much spunk,

vitality and strength. You were amazing as that little premature baby and you continue to amaze

me every day. I am so in love with my daughter!

Love Dad!

To Ethan

Memories of My First Encounter with you

Hair. The first thing that I remember is your hair. Then my nervousness about catching you. How would I hold you, catch you and make sure that you were OK? Fortunately, we had Candice to cover for my inexperience and there you were, my beautiful boy. The feeling in that moment was so overwhelming! I cried when you came out and I clumsily held you and then momentarily passed you to your mom, all slimy, bloody and crying — usually a negative, but now very much the opposite — bringing us instant joy!

I then had the privilege of cutting your cord (which was harder than I had expected) and then we took you to be weighed. From the moment of your first injection, you holding my finger tight, me comforting you, saying, ‘It will be OK, my champ’ I knew that I wanted to always be there for you when you needed me till the day that I die.

The overwhelming feeling of pride in your APGAR score and your first feed. You were so much better than I had hoped and prayed that you would be.

I went through the names that your mom and I had discussed — Ethan, Paxton, Max — and wondered which one suited you best. I settled on one and took you back to Mom. Amazingly, when I asked her which one she thought it should be, it turned out to be the same name that I had thought of. It was almost as if this name had been destined for you and that we had just had to see your beautiful face for it to be placed on our hearts.

Taking you to the paed, I felt immense pride. ‘This is my boy.’ You were so beautiful that I didn’t even mind people wondering if you were a girl.

I captured the moments on my phone so that I could relive these life-changing moments and share them with the world.

In the moment of our first encounter it felt as if the world was standing still. God poured his blessing on us and our lives just got better. Looking back, we knew that we hadn’t realised just how much better you would make things.

Your name is Ethan Grant Wills. Ethan means ‘strong’ and Grant means ‘great’. This is who you are. Let your strength come from the One who gives it and know that you are great, not because of what you have done or will do, but because you are our son.

I love you, my boykie!

To my beautiful Daughter, Lia

The other day I found an old pair of your shoes at the bottom of a cupboard and it struck me how quickly you’ve grown from being my baby to a beautiful little girl now on the cusp of becoming a young lady. I know that you don’t like it when people make a fuss over your beauty and, although you are definitely not a girly-girl, I see you like a porcelain doll (tomboy doll, if you must) with the character and compassion to match you exquisite beauty.

I must tell you, Lia, how special you are and how you have kept your mom and me strong through this very tough time. I know that without you it would have been so much more difficult and I know how hard it must have been for you too, yet you stay strong and are like a shining light for us.You make me so proud of the way that you always handle yourself in difficult situations at school and with your schoolmates. I love the way that you enjoy sport and that we don’t even have to encourage you to do it. One of my favourite things is to come to your matches to see you play. Such a healthy happy kid.Speaking of happy, you have a wicked sense of humor and we have such good fun together. Another of my favourite pastimes is going shopping with you, although you usually make me forget stuff because you continuously distract me (but in a good way) and still, even after all these years, try to sneak stuff into the basket. I love the way you take over the scale at the fruit and veg section while the shop attendant looks on and this must make him/her realize how replaceable they are.Whenever I pick you up from school, my spirits are immediately lifted and I can never be in a bad mood.Your interest in nature has grown so much in the last two years and it gives me the utmost pleasure to teach you the different species of trees, birds, insects... and, of course, your favourites — snakes!Watching you grow up into a beautiful, intelligent, well-mannered, caring, loving girl is the best thing a father could wish for and you will never know how much pure joy it gives me to be your dad.I tell you all the time, but just in case you have forgotten...you are the best thing in the world!I love you, Dad

To my beautiful son, Tristen

From the very first day that you came into this world, you changed

my life. It was the most ecstatic, overwhelming feeling that I’ve ever

experienced and words cannot describe the emotions adequately —

through streaming tears and sobs, as I cut your umbilical cord I was

smitten. It was if I was born to be your father.

When you came to us, I was changing careers so, with my new

freelance job, I had the time and the privilege of watching,

learning and teaching you as a house dad during the early

years. It was truly amazing to watch you grow up into a very

observant and intelligent young toddler. You were always such a happy baby —

quiet, but very busy — and you constantly kept me on my toes. The way that you interacted with the

pets and all living creatures was so special; it seemed that you already ‘understood’ nature from the time that you

could crawl, so it’s not surprising that you could name many animals, birds, snakes insects and trees (some with Latin names) by

the time you were 11 years old.

When I came home after a tour, you would come running to meet me and carry my bag so that you could rummage through it,

knowing that I’d have a present from the bush that I’d found for you... a strange stone, crystal, eagle’s feather, sun-dried bone,

carved toy/animal, insects, snakes, scorpions, etc. You would treasure them, study them and let them free in the garden. I was

thrilled beyond words after I bought you that book and CD on frogs and frog calls that within a few months you could hear a frog

and tell me what it was!

Eventually I had to take you school and you loved it. It’s as if you were born for learning and you did so well academically (unlike

me). School was fun for you and your spirits were always high in the mornings before school. A wonderful memory of mine is when

I had to drop you at school early because you were in Grade Five and had ‘duties’ to look after the Grade Ones till their teachers

arrived. As you walked up to the class, you were mobbed by the Grade Ones climbing on you and hanging on your arms as you

lifted then off their feet — it was adorable and they loved you. It was unusual, too, how you could sit with elderly people and listen

to and joke with them for hours. You could relate to any age — a sign of an ‘old soul’ that I only recognize now.

Our days at Thula Thula are etched into my soul and, although I didn’t know it then, they turned out to be some of our best times

ever. You were in you element on the tracker seat as my tracker on game drives —.except when we met the elephants and you

scrambled over the bonnet to get inside the vehicle, laughing with nervous excitement. Mabula gave us some very scary moments

and seeing a leopard at night was unbelievable. I will never forget that moment. It was the cherry-on-the-top of our game drives,

even after the hyena sightings we had together one very dark night. These are golden memories that I will treasure forever and we

will talk of them again one day.

My boy, I could go on and on about our times together and how proud I am of you. I think that somehow you knew that your time

here was limited and that’s why you lived life to its fullest. We had some strange conversations about where we go when we die

and whether animals have souls, etc. At the time, I wondered why a boy of your age would think about stuff like that, but it makes

more sense now. I remember how you would read passages from The Secret to me way after your bedtime on a school night, until

I made you turn the light off. When you stayed with me, you would not sleep until I had said, ‘Good night’ and ‘I love you’. I used

to purposely irritate you by not adding ‘I love you’ after ‘Good night’ until you would keep shouting, ‘I love you dad! Dad, I love

you!’… Yes, it makes sense now.

Your mom and I will never recover from the way you were taken from us so early in your life, so needlessly and painfully. We think

about it every day and it is still unacceptable to us. I cannot describe the guilt that I feel for not making those doctors listen to us.

Some may think that I’m crazy for writing this letter to you now that you’re gone (and I may be), but I know that you hear me. I often

feel your presence near me — serendipity, coincidence... it’s the same to me. It’s as if I have a direct line to the other side — that’s

how strong our love for each other is. It’s like a private conduit that only we know about. I see you reflected back at me in nature

all the time and I take great comfort in it. I am truly honoured to have been your dad for 13 and a half years — they were the best

years of my life. One day we will be together again and giggle and laugh as we did so many times. You are the finest thing that

ever happened in my life — thank you, my boy... I will forever be your proud dad.

I love you, DaD

‘Don’t you wish that you had a son?’ This was a question often directed at my father, who has three daughters, of which I am the eldest. Every time, he answered quickly and with conviction, ‘Nope. I love being a dad to girls.’ And he really does. Even when the house was full of GHDs, giggling girls and with clothes strewn all over the place, my dad seldom moaned about the lack of testosterone in his home. To my dad, we were never little princesses waiting to be rescued. We were brave explorers with something important and significant to offer the world. I think that’s why all three of us are opinionated, adventurous women, full of ideas and passion. We did plays and drama, but we also put posters of our favourite cricket players up on our walls. He went to endless ballet concerts and piano recitals, but he also taught us the rules of rugby and how to surf. I remember a friend’s parents chuckling at me as an 11-year-old little girl shouting, ‘Oh come ON, Ref, that was SO off-sides!’ during a Sharks game — a tribute to my rugby-mad dad.

I learnt more from my dad than how to spot a biased referee, though. As I now parent two children of my own, I think back on what was normal in my childhood and realise that amongst the many things that he showed me, there are a few that stand out and

shape the way that I try to do things now.

Don’t take things too seriouslyEvery morning on the way to school, we would drive past the local boys’ high school. This was a major event for us 13-year-olds — straining to see which boys we knew, but dying of embarrassment if one of the white-blazered prefects spotted us gawking. My dear father would frequently slow the car to a snail’s pace, press down on the hooter and not let go until we were past the school. Always the clown, he knew just what buttons to push to get us laughing at what other people might think of us. When we were smaller, and still sometimes as we got older, on the drive to school he would keep driving around and around the traffic circles in our neighbourhood until we were all propelled over to one side of the car, laughing and begging him to stop. To a kid, school and friends and the opposite sex can be overwhelming. My dad would somehow casually put it into context for us and remind us that taking these things too seriously can steal all the joy and light out of everyday life.

connect before you directMy dad recalls coming into our rooms when we were sulky, sullen teenagers. He would come and sit on the bed while we rolled our eyes and fielded his questions about school

and friends and weekend plans. We tried to ignore him, but he would stay patiently, even sitting in relaxed silence until eventually we would start to chat. He had the wisdom and patience to just hang out until we overcame our adolescent indifference and we would end up laughing and telling stories. When it came time for him to say ‘no’, or set limits, or negotiate some conflict with us, there was a bridge already built. Instead of generally keeping his distance and then occasionally intervening to tell us what to do, we had a relational currency that he used when it mattered. I only realise what a difference it made now that I try the same thing with my boys.

Say it with actions, not just wordsMy dad lived out what mattered and usually he showed us, instead of just telling us. When each of us turned 13, he took us on our first date. He opened the car door for me, took me to dinner, and told me, ‘This is how a boy should treat you.’ He also asked my hapless Grade 11 dance date, ‘So, young man, what are you doing with your life?’ and then told him that he would punch him in the nose if anything happened to me. It was one of the most mortifying moments of my life, but secretly I loved to tell that story because I knew that he set the standards high because he thought that I was the best. He said it all the time, without saying it at all. A couple of years ago, I was setting the table for some special event at my folks’ house and I complained that my mom never had nice, fancy decor to make it all look pretty. My dad quickly reminded me that they had always chosen to take us kids on a holiday somewhere rather than to buy something new for the house and that we had been privileged enough to have had some amazing experiences as a family. It was a humbling reminder that people matter more than stuff and he seldom had to say it, because he actually lived it.

Of course, my dad wasn’t perfect and growing up you soon become aware of the struggles and faults of your childhood hero. But, to be honest, the lack of perfection just made him more real and more reachable. I hope to give my kids these same gifts some day.

This article is about how important it is to save water. I recently ran a one-day water test to see how much water I use in a day to brush my teeth and wash my hands. All that I did was put the plug in the drain of my basin, and I kept it plugged for 24 hours. The amount of water that I used was tremendous - I was shocked! Was this really how much water I use in only 24 hours? And this had not even included me taking a shower! If that much water is essential just for me in one day, imagine how much water the world is using every 24 hours! Water is one of the most precious resources on this earth and we all need to look after it and use it as sparingly as possible. So, unless we all hate marine life and we don’t want to run out of our precious water in the near future, lets not shower for more than ten minutes at the most! But in a way I’m actually already saving water because I hate to shower! So when I do shower, I only take five minutes to get it all over and done with! Also, if you’re about to find out who won Survivor or Masterchef, the power could go out because YOU showered for too long! That’s right, you guessed it, water is also used for generating electricity to power your television, lights and your plugs! Water is also used to save lots of people’s lives in hospitals.

MY ONE-DAY WATER TESTSurgeons use water before their operations to scrub their hands, and it is also used to keep the hospitals clean and to make food for the patients. And not to mention how much a person should drink in one day to keep healthy. Did you know that about 70% of your body is made up of water.

My mom says that we need to drink 8 glasses of water a day to stay healthy! Wow - that’s a lot! So, what I’m trying to say is that we use a LOT OF WATER everyday and we need to try save it! Here are a few ways that I’ve discovered how to save water. 1. When soaping your hands keep the tap

off! Only use water to wet your soap and rinse your hands.

2. Rather shower than bath because bathing uses so much more water.

3. When you brush your teeth, do not leave the tap running while brushing.

4. Instead of throwing your left over drinking water down the drain, rather use it to water a plant.

If everyone used some of the above tips, we would save billions of liters everyday! So please spread the word and try save a little water today because we are really going to need it tomorrow. Thanks for reading!

BY JENNI RIVETT | jennirivett.blogspot.com

Just when I thought that I had mastered the ultimate health and fitness plan, I stumbled across another powerful little tip to add to my collection which I can confidently confirm will turn every aspect of your health around — and I discovered it for myself quite by chance.

Having suffered a slight injury last year, I decided to perform my interval training on a rebounder (mini- trampoline) to avoid any impact through my joints. Rebounding allows the muscles to go through the full range of motion at equal force, producing fewer injuries, and increases proprioception, which has been shown to minimize the recurrence of sports injuries to the joints. I started to feel amazing! My energy went through the roof, I felt leaner than ever and compliments were flowing. I decided to investigate and do some research into this powerful piece of equipment, which is being hailed as a ‘miracle exercise’ by authorities in the scientific, and health and fitness world (including NASA).

The number one health benefit of rebounding is lymph drainage. The lymphatic system is spread throughout the body in a complex network of organs, tissue, capillaries, veins and ducts — in short, it is a vital garbage removal system. To ensure good lymph circulation, we need to keep active and breathe deeply on a regular basis.

ON THE REBOUNDOne of the best ways to boost lymph circulation is rebound exercise. No other activity can offer lymph drainage with so much effect, ease, enjoyment and availability (it’s like having a team of lymphatic masseurs available to do lymph drainage massage whenever you want). Ladies, think anti-cellulite!

Here’s how:• As you bounce and accelerate upwards,

the lymph valves close, forcing the fluid upward and building the pressure.

• At the top of the bounce the valves open, allowing the fluid to move forward into the next chamber.

• At the bottom of the bounce, the valves close, allowing the pressure to build once again.

• In addition, every single cell receives a gentle ‘squeeze’, clearing waste build-up and allowing oxygen and essential nutrients to enter. This innocent little ‘squeeze’ is at the very core of anti-ageing.

And the exciting part… four minutes of gentle bouncing will circulate the lymph system at least once, while just two minutes can flush the extracellular environment of fluid, waste and other build-up. Short, frequent sessions throughout the day will ensure that lymph keeps flowing and that cells stay healthy. Normally, the lymph fluid circulates through the body completely only

twice every twenty-four hours. I personally do my interval training on the rebounder three times a week, as well as bouncing twice a day (for five minutes) just to feel good and get the lymph flowing optimally.

If you’re feeling unwell, overweight and demotivated by your lack of results as we rapidly approach the middle of 2014, why not add some bounce to your life. With such an enormous list of benefits (too many to mention here) allow me to highlight what I am sure you all want to hear.

• Weight loss: Absolutely yes! Rebounding burns more calories than running, without the stress on your joints. The best way to burn calories is to perform intervals, which increases the calorie-burning effect.

• Depression and stress: The bouncing effect relaxes both body and mind and increases the flow of the feel-good hormones, serotonin and norepinephrine.

• Insomnia: Gentle rebounding also lowers brainwave frequencies, inducing a light alpha state, which has a calming and relaxing effect on the mind and body. When performed before bedtime, it promotes deep, restful sleep.

Go and purchase your rebounder from www.reboundsa.co.za and let’s all jump for joy!

What would you consider paying for your dream home? An extraordinary thing has happened in the ultra high-end residential market in the US during the first few months of this year. Three transactions have been recorded above the US$100m level, shattering absolute price records, and positioning these three new concluded sales firmly within the top five of all time. Barry Rosenstein, founder of hedge fund Jana Partners LLC, purchased 60 Further Lane, a 7.3 ha beachfront property in East Hampton, NY for US$147m in May 2014. That is over R1,5bn! This broke the record for a single family residential home price record of US$120m set in April 2014 for a Connecticut waterfront estate. The West Coast also featured with the sale of a property called “Fluer de Lys” in Holmby Hills, California for US$102m in March 2014. These three transactions now represent the first, second and fourth slots of the highest transactions recorded to date in the US. The number three position in the top 5 is occupied by a US$117,5m sale of a Mountain Home Road property in Woodside, California and the fifth place is represented by a Silicon Valley Mansion in Los Altos Hills, California which was bought by a facebook investor, Yuri Milner, in March 2011 for US$100m as a secondary home. Imagine paying over R1bn for a holiday home!

To relate the single record sale in the US to our local setting, you would be able to purchase most of the 48 beachfront

Market focUsProPertY 47 freehold transfers. When Sol Kerzner

developed the landmark One&Only Hotel and Resort in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, he had the foresight to create spectacular residential real estate opportunities in the form of three ultra-exclusive penthouses occupying the top floor of the hotel. These three penthouses, according to the registered deeds office reports, traded at R108m on 15th December 2009 for Penthouse 3 measuring 1,155 sqm. Seeff Atlantic Seaboard facilitated this transaction and at the time was widely publicized as the largest residential property sale in South Africa. Penthouse 1, measuring 1,130 sqm was registered on 20th February 2012 at R63m. Penthouse 2, the small one measuring 868 sqm was registered on 14th January 2013 at R55,5m.

On the Cape Town freehold transactions, the top five I was able to uncover were two R60m transactions: 34 Nettleton Road, Clifton and 10 St Leon Avenue, Bantry Bay, followed by 4 Nettleton Road at R50m, 151 Kloof Road at R48,3m and 17 Nettleton Road at R45m. The firepower of high-end transactions in Nettleton Road is astounding with 8 of the 47 freehold transactions above R25m coming from this one road. The lowest price in Nettleton Road from my data set was R30m.

In analyzing the 73 top Johannnesburg transactions within the residential suburbs and attempting to filter the corporate transactions I was able to identify some serious high end trade in Sandhurst. A magnificent home accessed off Oxford Avenue on a 4,515 sqm site traded at R80m on 19 July 2013. This same home had been bought four and a half years earlier on 16 January 2009 for R65m. Around the corner 31 Coronation Road in Sandhurst had traded at R46m and 12 Coronation Road at R35,1m. A Westcliff home that traded at R56,6m was the third highest end-user transaction I was able to identify. While there is no doubt that Johannesburg’s top suburbs provide extraordinary homes on relatively large erven, Cape Town dominates the residential landscape in South Africa. For now our top KZN suburbs and estates are relatively under-valued by comparison.

properties in Zimbali along Milkwood Drive, Corkwood Drive and Cherrywood Lane with a budget of R1,5bn. Our local record residential property investment is in fact not within Zimbali but just on the western boundary. Zimbabwean national and Chairman of US listed Mbada Diamonds, Dr. Robert Mhlanga, bought two neighbouring 7,2 ha sites – one for approximately R90m (the sale never appeared on the deeds register as the transaction was done in terms of a sale and purchase of shares). The other transaction, for essentially vacant land as the only structure on the property was an old pottery gallery, was registered at a cool R100m on 23rd May 2012. The previous registered recorded transaction of this property had occurred on 26th July 1994 at a price of R100,000. A spectacular one thousand fold gain over this 18-year period. The infrastructural improvements that followed on these sites are conservatively estimated to be R200m. With an estimated R400m invested this represents the most expensive single family residential opportunity in KZN and possibly South Africa.

This fascination with the world’s top selling residential properties fueled my search for the top end transactions within South Africa. I focused my research on two regions – the Cape Town Atlantic Seaboard and specifically the suburbs of Clifton, Bantry Bay, Camps Bay, Bakoven and Llandudno and the leading Johannesburg suburbs of Westcliff, Sandhurst, Dunkeld, Atholl, Hurlingham, Houghton, Bryanston and Dainfern Golf Estate. I considered all registered transactions within these suburbs above R25m for the period 1 January 2009 to 7 May 2014. I reasoned that this 5-year period of high-end transfer data was sufficient to provide insight into where South Africa’s serious transactions are mostly occurring. The Cape Town data set included 66 transactions and the Johannesburg data included 73 registered sales. The Cape Town transfers were split between 19 sectional title sales and
