CLASS OF 2020 – ACADEMICS AWARD PROGRAM

HONORS & AWARDS DESCRIPTIONSNATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY • Be a sophomore, junior, or senior. • Have attended Ballard High School for at least one
full semester or have been a member of the National Honor Society at a previous school.
• Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50, beginning with 9th grade (semester grades only.)
• Have never been suspended/expelled from school for any reason.
• Provide evidence of service and leadership to school or community (15 hours required each semester once admitted to National Honor Society).
ABOVE & BEYOND SERVICE LEARNING All graduating seniors must complete 60 hours of service learning. Students receiving this medallion award have completed at least 240 hours of service learning while in high school.
SEAL OF BILITERACY The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school, district, or state in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.
LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDERS Ballard Elks Club Scholarships emphasize academic achievement and community involvement. The Ballard Elks Club reviews applications and, after selecting local winners, forwards the top applications to state and national competition.
Ballard Nineteen Scholarship was formed to remember the nineteen men from Ballard High School who died serving in Vietnam. To be eligible for this scholarship, this student had to have been a relative of one of the “Ballard Nineteen” or had a parent or grandparent that served in the armed forces. Daniel Chavez Scholarship was formed to honor Daniel Chavez who was a fallen marine in the Iraq war, who graduated from Ballard High School in 2003. To be eligible for this scholarship, this student had to be a
relative of Daniel Chavez, or had a parent, grandparent, or sibling that served in the Armed Forces.
Golden Beavers are Ballard alumni who graduated from Ballard High School 50 years ago or more. The Golden Beaver scholarships are awarded to deserving Ballard High School seniors to keep alive the spirit of Ballard High School.
Jack Bateman Scholarship Fund is an endowment established by Jack Bateman, a former counselor at Ballard High School. Students must attend a Washington state college or university.
The Ballard GAINS program stands for Graduation Assistance Identifying the Needs of Students and it has been generously funded through a partnership between Ballard High School, the Ballard High School Foundation and the Grousemont Foundation. The winners of the Ballard GAINS Scholarships are students that have been part of the GAINS program and have demonstrated growth and excellence in both academics and character.
Jenny Lee Scholarships are funded as a Ballard PTSA item and are given in memory of Jenny Lee, the mother of Mr. Dick Lee. Considerations include community service, employment outside of school, academics and other criteria. Roby Bader Scholarship is awarded to one student outstanding in school leadership and involvement. This scholarship originally was established by the Ballard High School PTSA to honor parent Martha Bader for her dedication to Ballard High School.
Seattle School District Scholarship fund offers two scholarships to each high school, to be awarded to one male and one female student.
WASHINGTON STATE AWARDS Washington State Principals’ Scholars certificates are awarded to students whose cumulative GPA places them in the top 5% of their school’s senior class.
Washington State Honors Certificates are awarded by the state of Washington to students who rank in the top 10% of this year’s graduating senior class state-wide. Ranking is done by the state using an index which weighs high school GPA and SAT/ACT scores.
